ok so we as a race and with our technology:

    * Can land on the moon
    * can have a machine breath for someone
    * have microchipes smaller than what the tip of your finger

but with all our technology advances we cant invent an ATM that asks you a simple multiple choice question - how much money do you want to withdraw and dispense that amount!!

Why does a machine let you select €50 and then tell you it can only dispense in €20 notes??? And then when you go back to select again, €50 is still an option!!

    Its harder than Suduko!!

    hah,
i love them machines that dont take your card inside
    "insert card"
    "remove card"
    "insert card"
    "remove card"
    "enter pin"
    "insert card"

its my favorite game, its a bit like tetris.
can be confusing when your drunk though :D

It's just ATM. The "m" stands for "machine".

Is that supposed to show how hard it is?

ATMs are great fun, sure I always enter my pin incorrectly just to see it eat my card up. Hours of entertainment going in and out of the bank getting your pin reset.

[Dylan Moran] Just show me the button with the picture of the pint on it! [/Dylan Moran]

no you have to work that out for yourself.

It's even worse when the ATM accepts yer card.......Accepts yer Pin......Lets you enter the desired amount......makes noise, you think you got yer money on the way and BANG.....Yer account balence is zip

Could it not have told me when I entered my PIN.

........And yes, I am a student(well, just finished), how did ye guess?

What always scares me is the "Enter amount in multiples of 20".
Wtf? I want a friggin' tenner!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,123 ✭✭✭stepbar

because someone has taken out too many 20's and there's no more left.... thats why theres only 50's left Okay?

    all terrain machine?

i aint never seen one in the desert yet :)

The Multiples of twenty confused me for a while. I used to keep entering in "3" expecting to get €60 only to find an error instead! I don't mind them generally. The "EasyCash" ones that ask you to remove your card before entering in your pin are annoying however. Oftentimes it doesn't register you putting in your card or taking it out and just freezes. Very annoying!

But its kind of forgivable. No?
ATM is sort of one of those acronyms which has become a word in itself, like Laser, Radar, Lcd, Led etc (although I suppose it really needs more vowels to really become just another word in the way Radar and Laser (and Led?) have....).

    PEBCAK in fairness.

Its an ATM for gods sake, I never have a problem with them... because I know how to use them. Those people that spend more than 20 seconds at an ATM getting money out are to me your archetypal "twelve o'clock blinkers", as in all their appliances in their house are blinking 12:00 constantly. Just learn what is needed of you to get your money out and then repeat that the next time. When withdrawing money, try and choose a value that is a multiple of 20, you will have a greater chance of getting it first try.

Don't the UlsterBank (I think.. might be some other bank) ones tell you when you can't have certain multiples?

They're not THAT bad but I agree they could be better

Students are loaded they just blow all their money on crap.

Yes it is fairly lazy programming indeed, but considering that every single one does it and there's a few different versions of ATM software around there must be some logical reason....

    ....There's wally.

I find the BOI atms bang on. Any of the others are old and slow.

In branch cash machines are a pain in the arse.
I was using one in a spar. I waited 2 minutes then a message came up saying it couldn't communicate with the bank.
Low and behold the cashier was on the phone.

Was behind a guy waiting my turn for the ATM. He apparently was not pleased with what was happening, as he started swearing at the machine. He then wacked it with the palm of his hand and charged off, still swearing. I am always amazed when someone starts talking to machines. No, you are not Neo and this is not The Matrix.

    Its harder than Suduko!!

Because the problem starts with the spooling and so is not a feature of the system. when you select €50 that input is only queried in the system when it requests to feed the spools. not when it gives you the amount selection

Basically it only knows it can not dispense 2x€20 and 1x€10 when it goes to actually get the €10. it doesnt check the supply when it gives you the amount withdrawal options (eg. €20, 40, 50, 60, 80, etc...).

Its a relatively simplistic system, to overcomplicate it would add to resources and not to mention add more issues to troubleshoot. the ATM is simplistic to keep downtime to a minimum.

Lastly as im sure you may already know the ATM doesnt have a direct feed from the vault so it has to be stocked with a limited amount of notes. hence it will inevitably run out of certain notes.

    OR

The simple sarcastic answer you could have come to yourself:

    Because its not programmed to!!

As its more cost effective to leave that simple choice up to the human operator, that being you. If you really need €50 and it cant dispense €10's or 1x€50 then whats so complicated about withdrawing €60

Also we as a race dont have the means to execute or have the technology you mentioned available to us anyway. The more important thing to know about us as a race is greed/ cost effectiveness

And to be a complete ass, i think the more pressing question would be, how we as a race with all our technology, do not progress as with our technologies. Of all the other questions to ask ill pose the the question how haven't we eliminated world poverty, etc, etc, etc....

We're still cavemen/ women we just have fancier tools at our disposal, as the only thing that ever changes over time, is our technology and the gods we choose to worship.

Although I am not sure if any Irish ATM machines are flawed.

The thing that annoys the fuk out of me is the ATM in clarehall. Card in, withdraw 400.. sorry you have a limit of 200. Withdraw 200, get money, put card back in and withdraw 200 again. get money.

    I'm with you there.

I get extremely frustrated with imbeciles taking forever to carry out blindingly simple transactions at ATMs.

It would appear that we have a lot of 'first timers' living among us.

Still, once it goes to get the €10 note and realises it ain't there, it wouldn't be a big deal to take €10 off the menu!

What annoys me is that when I'm home in Ireland and want to check my AIB balance I have to go to an AIB ATM but in America or Australia I can check my AIB balance from any ATM.

How hard can it be to integrate all the Irish banks?

slade_x is kinda right in that they try and keep the machine as stupid as possible to reduce errors that may occur and let the human operating the machine deal with its limitations.

But the real answer in why the machine can't know to remove those values from the menu, is that to update the machine costs money, and banks have never been about spending money unnecessarily.
