    Kirsty MacColl
    John Lennon
    Dermot Morgan

Politics; Olof Palme and the Swedish female minister both murdered, upset me.

For me it was Freddie Mercury. I was 21 and big Queen fan. I remember my Dad calling me into the front room to "look at whats on the telly" and I was so shocked. Poor Freddie - RIP

Another one that shocked me was Ayrton Senna. I'd heard of motorsport deaths but his got me in a different way.

I was also quite disappointed to hear of the death of Princess Diana.

Tony De Vit (was on holiday in Scotland at the time, and only starting to get into his music at the time)
    Robert Moog
    Johnny Cash

I don't know if it appeared anywhere in this thread already but Richard Burns death had a big effect on me. I'm a big Rally fan and seeing somebody so young and talented pass away the way he did was very sad.

if anyone wants to see Richard's memorials or sign one go to www.richardburns.com

oh my God, how could I forget? JOHN PEEL.

I was in Stockholm airport when I heard, and I cried.

    Kurt Cobain
    Layne Staley
Yer man out of Drowning Pool (never liked their music but saw them at Ozzfest a few months before)
    Dermot Morgan
    Steve Irwin
Freddie Mercury (gave us a class tribute concert though.
Cliff Burton (before I got into Metallica but shocking nonetheless)
    Richard Harris
    Dimebag

I'm sure there are others I can't think of.

    edit:
Mo Molam (legend of a woman with a gret sense of humour and a genuine politician who wanted to make a difference, especially in the North)
Robin Cook (especially for his stance and actions over the Iraq war)

The 2 celebrity deaths that really shook me were Dermot Morgan just because Father Ted was on then and so unexpected and Steve irwin recent passing for much the same reason, both guys were in there prime of there careers and such a surprise to hear them go, tbh they affected me more then any deaths in the family or for anyone I have ever known.

Joe Strummer would really be the only one that died and I went "oh ****..."

John Peel, Uaneen Fitzsimons (and to a lesser extent Stanley Kubrick). No one else so far.

Most celebs who die are the point where they have nothing more to offer (or have never had anything to begin with) so they aren't in my thoughts or interest-sphere at the time so I don't really feel any loss. For example I'd consider Brando a legend but that was back before I was born. He basically prostituted himself towards the end so it really made no difference to me that he was gone.

Syd Barrett was probably the only one to actually make me sad when I heard it happened, he was one of my idols.

I didn't know who he was at the time(I was 6), but the thought of Shannon Hoon dying always makes me feel sad also.

one i hadnt thought about because i was only a kid when it happened... bobby sands and the other hunger strikers..i was too young to really know what it was all about but the memories of that period stuck. I remember looking down the road from our kitchen window and it seemed like every window in every flat all the way down the road had a black flag sticking out

Wow, I used to be very into and involved in rallying, kinda of lost interest about 2 or 3 years ago though and had no idea Burns had died. Very sad indeed.

    Cormac McAnallen
    Paul McGirr
    Marc Vivien Foe
    Steve Irwin
    Dermot Morgan
    Kirsty MacColl
    Uaneen Fitzsimons
    Mother Theresa
    Pope John Paul II

Obviously, the deaths of Pope John Paul and Mother Theresa were to be expected. However, they still did hit me when they occured.

Mo Mowlam and Johnny Cash are the two that really stand out for me. Oh and oddly enough, Nigel Hawthorne (the English actor who starred in Madness of King George and Yes Minister/Prime Minister, amongst other stuff) for some reason. Really liked him.

    In no particular order,

    Douglas Adams,
    Steve Irwin,
    Ayrton Senna,
    Dermot Morgan,
    Richard Whitely,
    Phil Lynott,
    John Candy
    Mother Teresa,
    Diana, Princess of Wales.

All of those people inspired me in some way either through their engaging personality and energy or their ability to entertain me or their good works.

Woke up this morning to find out that Peter Brock had died yesterday. The second Australian icon to pass away this week and it's rocked me. Makes me realise how far away from home I am, how nothing in life is certain or guaranteed and how every day should be lived to the full.
At the very least Brocky, like Steve Irwin earlier this week, was doing what he loved when he died.

Yeah, just heard about Brocky a while ago and posted the news in the Motorsport forum. God, what a week it's been for Australia, loosing two of their well-known personalities within a few days. :( As they say, things come in threes and it makes you wonder who's going to be next!

    Mentioned already.....

    Douglas Adams
    Freddie Mercury
    Dermot Morgan

    Not mentioned yet...

    Ronnie Barker
Fred Dibnah ( steam engine tv guy - so full of character and enthusiasm )
    Andreas Katsulas ( sci-fi actor, played "G'Kar" in "Babylon 5" )

Some of these are mentioned already, but I was shocked and / or saddened by the following at the time:

George Harrisson - my favourite Beatle, and it was unexpected (too young to remember John Lennon's)

John Entwistle - love The Who and as I don't remember Keith Moon's death, this is was the first of a great band to go for me.

Robert Palmer - another taken very young.

Kirsty McCall - as somebody else mentioned, who would have though Shane McGowan would outlive her?

Princes Di - didn't really have any feelings for her as a person, but the death was a huge surprise, nonetheless.

Gregory Peck - not surprising, he died at a ripe old age, and lived a good life, but I admired him as an actor and was saddened at his passing.

    Robert Mitchem - as above.

Linda McCartney - knew she had cancer, but somehow never, ever thought she could actually die from it, and it did sadden me a little.

Douglas Adams - great fan of his books and very sad to see him go before his time.

    Marc Bolan -

    Jim Morrison -

Though these last two were both before my time, or I don't remember them, they are sadly missed and I can only try to imagine what great music would have been produced had they lived.

    Forgot about John Ritter.
Very sad watching the episode of 8 Simple Rules that deals with his sudden death. The genuine emotion shown by the actors is very moving.
