Famous people who died, and you cared

The Steve Irwin thread got a huge response, and got me thinking of how many famous folks have died and it made me go "god dammit" or give it extra attention. tbh, not too many. Like all of us I was slightly shocked by Irwins death and am awful sorry for his family. However, because I never really watched his programme more than a few times (im just not really into nature shows tbh, neevr have been) i doubt i was as hit by it as some of yis.

So, who died and you were bothered? Was thinkin myself, came up with

George Best- a football legend, a true Irish party guy and a real character (some of his quotes, feckin genius). Im no Brian Kennedy or Westlife fan but that song being sang at his funeral was a bit moving

Ol Dirty Bastard of the Wu Tang- he wasnt the worlds greatest rapper, but he was without doubt the games biggest character. Absoloute madcap, but at the same time seemed like a genuinely nice dude.

Id add Tupac and especailly Notorious BIG to this, only id barely heard of them when they died (i was 10 or so)

    edit- jaysus, forgot Dermot Morgan

JFK Friday 22 Nov 1963 at 1830 Irish Time.

We had just got the ESB and the B+W telly, with rabbits ears the month previous and I was limited to half hour a week:) .

Just after the program started the program, the continuity announcer butted in to say John F kennedy, President of the US had been killed. They continued with religious music:eek:

Would be nice for a date and a little background as to where u were etc

Johnny Cash. Not exactly unexpected but made me sit up andtake notice nonetheless.

    Freddy Mercury.

I was only 8 but I remember being really upset. My dad is a huge Queen fan and we were raised on the music. Was a very sad day in our house that November.

I'm sure there's a few more but these "celeb" deaths definitely had an effect on me in one way or another emotionally...Kurt Cobain, Dermot Morgan, Pope JP II, Johnny Cash, Spike Milligan, Jill Dando, Karen Keating, Veronica Guerin, Mother Theresa, Yitzhak Rabin, Roy Castle, Richard Whitely.

John Candy, always enjoyed his films. Again he died due to his lifestyle.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,936 ✭✭✭fade2black

    Dermot Morgan

    David Rocastle

    Les Sealey

    I'm sure there's a lot more.

i genuinely didnt care about the pope because of his age. He had a good run.

    Randle Patrick McMurphy.

A fictional character maybe, but his death moved me more than any real famous person.

Kenny Everett, Dermot Morgan, Freddie Mercury I'll think of a few more overnight.

    Mike.

Dermot Morgan, John Candy. JFK junior for the suprise value and it was dragged out for a few days that makes me remeber it.

    didnt care about anyone else.

Remember hearing of Vernoica Guerin's murder in work all those years ago and I was totally stunned. Deaths of celebs I couldn't really give a toss about. Most of there are just overrated morons. That British princess being the prime example. Talk about over-reaction.

Still seems weird though looking at Fr Ted and knowing that Dermot Morgan is dead so many years now. And every Christams when Fairytale of New York is on, it seems bizarre that Kirsty McColl was gone long before Shane McGowan. As I said though, their deaths just seem weird, they don't actually have an effect on me.

Recently: Pope JP II, Johnny Cash
but also Sam Kinnison and Chris Farley.

Freddie Mercury had such an amazing voice. He is also a great loss to music. As well as Frank Zappa.

George Harrisson, Steve Irwin nobody else I can think of really. I wasn't alive when he was killed but whenever I watch any documentaries about John Lennon it makes me really angry that somebody took him from the world.

The first one that always springs to mind for me whenever these kinds of questions are asked is Ayrton Senna. I grew up watching his epic battles on the racetracks of the world over the years, in particular his battles with Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell, and the guy seemed to be invincible. Considering there hadn't been a fatality at a Formula 1 race in so long (the previous death during a race was in 1982, I think), I think us fans had maybe gotten a bit blase about the dangers of Grand Prix racing and just considered the cars to be so strong that the likelihood of there ever been a death again was extremely small.

Then, to have Rubens Barrichello suffer a horrendous crash in Friday practice that he was extremely lucky to survive, followed by Roland Ratzenburger's death on Saturday and then Senna's during the race on Sunday, I think it hit everyone, the fans, the teams, the drivers, organisers, everybody, extremely hard. Without a doubt the weekend of the San Marino Grand Prix in 1994 will go down in history as the worst weekend in the history of F1 racing and one which shattered any illusions anybody may have had that motor racing was completely safe. Especially Senna's death, a three times World Champion and a guy who, as I said before, seemed invincible behind the wheel of a racing car, for him to die as he did really hit all fans of the sport very hard I think.

As other's have said, Dermot Morgan was another person who's death shocked myself and a lot of people. Seeing as he was so young and all when he died and as he was finally getting all the plaudits and recognition that he deserved so much after many years of trying, for him to be taken away as he was was very sad too.

    Stanley Kubrick
    John Candy
Hunter S thompson (forgot him cause it was so recent)

Only 3 I mourned the day they died. Others I only became aware of as I discovered their works, such as Bob Fosse or was too young when they passed away and wasnt really aware of it (Freddie Mercury)

    Kirsty McColl,
    Dermot Morgan,
    Diana,
    Veronica Guerin,

Were the ones that hit me more than most I spose.
Especially Kirsty, her death was so unbelievable to me I actually "gasped" and it brought a tear to my eye to hear how it happened.....and I dont *do* "Gasped"or tears. ;)

I can honestly say that Steve Irwin's is the first "celebrity" death to actually bother me. I was a bit upset when Dermot Morgan died but that was just cos of a selfish desire for more Ted, I didn't really give a damn about morgan. Irwin on the other hand seemed so genuine that watching his shows made me feel like I actually knew the guy, he wore his heart on his sleave and it was very infectious. His lust for life and constant energy made him an admirable person, basically unlike morgan it's not the celebrity of steve irwin that will be missed but the man himself.

100% agree. I was in shock when it happened... Definitely no other celebrity death effected me in any way close to that. For it to happen so suddenly in the peak of his career was a huge tragedy.

    Steve Irwin.
    Richard Whitely.
    Johnny Cas.

Not really 'hit' by it as such. Just would have preferred if they did not die.

Id' like to add Deem Bristow, but he's not really famous, only known to sonic the hedgehog fans.

Hunter S. Thompson is the only one that has really affected me. He was a hero of mine and when I heard of his suicide I felt kinda let down that he would give up like that.

Steve Irwin, Richard Whitely, and Douglas Adams are the only famous people whose deaths really surprised and saddened me. Particularly Douglas Adams, at the time he died I was just really getting into reading his stuff, and I'd let him become something of a hero of mine.

Definitly Dimebag for me. He was so full of fun and a real mad guy. I never got to see him live because of Tatoo the planet being re-scheduled because of September 11th. Then Just suddenly gone, in a horrific way.

    Stanley Kubrick,
    Hunter S. Thompson,
    Kurt Cobain,
    George Harrison.

    ...and E.T. (
although he came back.. hurrah! \o/
    )

Pope John paul II. It's not that I'm really religous, but he'd been there as far back as I could remember, and the hugeness of the event and funeral.
George Harrison because he's a Beatle.
Joey Dunlop because he was pretty much invincible, and again he was always around. A real legend.
Richard Britten. Just a lovely guy and so talented. Hit me at the funeral that motor racers are people, with families and private lives, not some sort of indestructable robots.
George Best. I know it was coming for years, but I liked the guy, and just thought he was one of those people with nine lives.

    Steve Irwin
    George Best
    John Ritter
    Tupac + Biggy

The name John Ritter doesn't ring any bells but the other three should not have been a surprise to anyone. Irwin faffing about infront of letal animals, Best drank himself to death, and Tupac socialised with nasty pieces of work.

Only person whose death really surprised me was Kirsty MacColl.

The only ones that really affected me were Steve Irwin and Dermot Morgans deaths as I'm a big fan of both of them. John Candys death affected me but to a lesser extent I guess.

People like Mother Theresa, John Paul II etc. , the older people, all had a good run so was just glad to see them go without much suffering.

Dimebag Darrell - probably the most shocking

Freddie Mercury (the day he died my english teacher sobbed her eyes out for the entire class - didn't know what the heck was wrong with her)

John Denver - as a kid I loved his stuff (into slightly different music now :D )

Kurt Cobain - wasn't a huge fan, but it was a shock - we went into the Phoenix Park for a tribute, ended up like one big drinking session..

John Candy - was watching Planes, Trains & Automobiles the other night, still hard to believe he's dead over 12 years!

Steve Irwin and Dermot Morgan for me too, but also Michael Hutchence. Kick by INXS was the first album I bought, and they were the first band I was really into. My flatmate told me, and for about two days, I just couldn't believe it - same for all three really, even tho the thought "Steve Irwin is dead" pops into my head every 10 minutes or so, every time is like the first time I've heard it. It's weird.
