I'm planning on moving to cork city fairly soon. Just wondering what gyms are around the city centre area and what they're like. Opening hours are quie important (like to get in nice and early).

I am a member of UCC's gym out in the Mardyke. Pretty good facilities in regards to both cardio and free weights. Plenty of machines but it can get a bit hectic around 6 and 7 at night. Daveirl goes in the morning and it opens at 7 I think. There is a car park out there which is free and its pretty central to the city, just near Fitzgerald's Park.

Gyms in the city are the Locker Room on Washington St, Fiton Street gym which is just off South Mall, the Clarion Hotel's gym which is on the quayside and also Leeside Leisure which is near McCurtain St.
The Locker Room seems a very good place to train, was incredibley clean when I went to check it out and the equipment was brand new but this was about 2 years ago. As far as i know though its pricey out. I think opening times might be 7.30
Don't know much about Fitton Street gym but it just looks dodgy and a place for muscle mary's. Its down some side street like.
Leeside leisure is poor, old equipment and the changing rooms were poor last time i was in there (2 years ago). I just remember the place for having at least one of the 5 treadmills out of order at any one time. However I do know that its open at 7 and is central in the city.
Haven't a clue about the Clarion.

Rivers Edge is next to the FAS building but that doesn't open until 9.

The Locker Room was cheaper than the Mardyke when I joined :D

Mardyke opening times are here and prices are here

Fitton street is the bodybuilders gym in Cork.

Rivers edge is bad I have been told, though I never bothered finding out myself.

The Clarion hotel apparently has a good gym but I have to wonder what a hotel gym is going to be like versus a dedicated separate gym.

Mardyke has everything you need from a gym including running track, squash courts, swimming pool etc. and a good mix of people going in there so you never feel as though your the unfittest or fittest in there. The staff are (in my experience) extremely unfriendly. It gets very very busy after work hours and I can vouch for that. With college starting in a few weeks its only going to get busier.

The Locker Room is where I go now, having left the Mardyke. Its got everything you need, It has a better free weights setup than the Mardyke, though the Mardyke has a larger volume the Locker Room has a better layout imo. It has a sauna and a steam room in the changing rooms. However the first thing I noticed is how nice the staff were. I always had problems with the attitudes of the staff in the Mardyke and I have to say I'm delighted that I moved to the Locker Room. I have never seen it remotely as busy as the Mardyke gets.

As far as I know only the Clarion and the Mardyke would have parking worth talking about.

I just didnt like the layout of the free weights upstairs in the Mardyke. It was hard not to interrupt someones workout when your trying to get to a particular set of weights or move to another bench etc.

I said the layout was better in the Locker Room, imo. I also said the Mardyke had a higher volume of free weights.

Dont worry Dave, I wouldnt go so far as to try and discredit the mardyke :D

Though I used to mardyke religiously when I was playing rugby in college I would prefer the Locker Room hands down.

I find that more serious people go to the locker room too. I mean I remember queueing for something in the mardyke while some 18 year old did 7 sets, with different reps each set...I'm never waiting like that in the Locker Room and peopel understand about sharing the benches and the machines between sets. All in all its just a better experience...

It's €10 to go find out for yourself if you want to. I would give it a try at least.

It's a great feeling when you finish a workout and you have the changing room+shower+sauna+steam room all in one area too.

Thanks for all that people. So long as its open for 7 its grand for me. Saunas/steamrooms and all that aren't too important as I usually have to leg it to work after my shower! I don't know where exactly I'll be living so location would be a big factor too.

I'll probably have a few questions about trainers in the area when I get setteled.

    Till then.
