What is your favourite year of Big Brother?

The third series saw two early walkouts, by housemates Sunita Sharma and Sandy Cumming; Sandy surprised his fellow housemates as well as the production team by urinating in a bin, scaling a wall and escaping over a roof. Sunita was replaced by Sophie Pritchard, and Sandy by Tim Culley.

Also this year the house was split into two for a time: those on one side had more luxuries and better food than those on the other. A weekly task, shown live on Saturday nights, determined which housemates lived on which side of the Rich House / Poor House divide. Kate Lawler and Jonny Regan spent more time on the poor side of the house than any other contestant, which may have fostered sympathy for them from the viewers.

Housemate Jade Goody became notorious for startling feats of ignorance. She harboured the belief that Mother Teresa was related to Albert Einstein (which she pronoucnced Heinzstein), and Sherlock Holmes (whom she believed invented toilets) and that Rio de Janiero was a person. Two of her most famous quotes, both of which indicate the paucity of her general knowledge are: "They were trying to use me as an escape goat" and "Do they speak Portuganese in Portugal?". It is emblematic of today's society that Jade Goody has come out the house the most well off, admitting in Sky One's show Why reality TV is good for you that she is a millionairess; the tabloids started a hate campaign of unseen proportions during her stay in the house, before switching to giving her sympathetic coverage when they began to fear that she might be psychologically damaged if she left the house to be met by the hatred they had helped to foment.

Alex also became a popular figure due to his obsession with cleaning the house, and ended up in Domestos commercials, singing along to KC & The Sunshine Band's hit That's The Way I Like It, following a famous, in-house incident in he sang along to the song to a camera as a door closed.

By far, the largest fad in the house was a game called Follow the Van. In one of the weekly shopping deliveries was a fluorescent Mystery Machine van, from cereal brand Sugar Puffs' Scooby Doo promotion. It was finally revealed on the reunion show that it involved following the van with your lips, and kissing where it came into contact with someone.

The eventual winner of the £70,000 prize was Kate Lawler, who went on to co-present Channel 4's breakfast TV show, RI:SE. Two other housemates, Sophie Pritchard and Lee Davey, later got married.

The final of this series drew 10 million viewers, the highest ever audience for a Channel 4 programme (excluding feature films).

Big Brother UK series 5 2004

Ahmed Aghil

Ahmed Aghil (born March, 1960) fled to Britain from Somalia during the early 1990s, and is now a successful property developer. He gained a reputation for his eccentricity and his inexplicable outbursts of violence while in the house. He always remained least favourite to win, with odds ranging from 33/1 to 50/1.

Ahmed usually spent time alone in the garden, or asleep. He was fairly sedate, in sharp contrast to most of the house, meaning that he did not bond with anyone in the house much, and indeed was fairly irritated by many of the housemates.

After a few weeks of participation in the programme, Ahmed began to have spontaneous violent outbursts, in which he threw plates around, chopped the head of a papier-mâché statue off with a spade and screamed out loud (the first two were in response to the playing into the house of a crying baby, the first time to try to wake the housemates up, the second time to try to get them to talk after they refused to speak for a day in protest at failing a task. He explained his behaviour later on by stating that as a father, he found the sound of a crying baby extremely disturbing). It eventually became clear that he was under enormous psychological pressure in the house, and that he was becoming increasingly deranged-he recognised this himself, but refused to leave the house of his own accord, since he harboured a dream of having an eviction night and interview like all other evictees (he referred to this as "his night"). Eventually, it got to the point where he was asking the other housemates to nominate him for eviction. Even when he did so, he was not evicted.

He became somewhat unpopular in the house, with the public turning against him after an incident in the house during a weekly "Big Brother Boot Camp" task, in which he was assigned the role of a private (along with 5 other housemates) while two others were assigned the role of sergeant. He refused to do several activities as required by the task, came to blows with (more popular) sergeant Michelle and eventually tried to instigate a military coup. In an interview with the Daily Mirror after the show had finished, he said that his reluctance to take part in the task was due to the memories of the militia in his own country that contributed to his claim for asylum in the UK. Despite this, the group passed the task: however, in accordance with the rules of the task, the privates were immediately up for eviction. He was evicted with 56% of the vote. In his post-eviction interview, he remarked that he did not expect to remain in the house past the third week.

Becki Seddiki

Becki Seddiki (born July 24, 1970) is a singer-songwriter and musician from London, and has Moroccan blood. Her choice of Michelle as recipient of her 'Judas kiss' was hugely unpopular with viewers and resulted in her being evicted at the earliest opportunity.

Since Big Brother, Becki has landed a twice weekly radio DJing slot on a radio station in London (from 2006 onwards) and is still recording her music and performing at several gigs all over the UK.

Emma Greenwood

One of the lip gloss bitches, Emma (born October 12, 1983) was removed from the house for safety reasons after the notorious "fight night" in which she played a leading role. Emma is originally from Oldham, Greater Manchester and had a minor singing career before and after her time in the house.

Jason Cowan

The runner up, he formed a friendship with Victor Ebuwa and Ahmed Aghill that led to the formation of a prominent clique known as the Jungle Cats. Cowan's presence at the end brought a balance to the house after all the villains had left and only friends or people that sat on the fence were left. He spent most of his time laying in bed and bitching about the other housemates with Victor, shaving every concievable part of his body for lengthy periods of time, and exercising almost constantly.

He was born on November 1, 1973, in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. He was in Five's recent show Commando VIP, in which he and five other celebrities had to complete SAS-style tasks.


Kathryn "Kitten" Pinder

Kathryn ("Kat", or "Kitten") Pinder (born October 13, 1979) entered the house on May 28, 2004 and was evicted one week later on June 4 after continuously breaking house rules and receiving three formal warnings. After her eviction, Kitten occasionally appeared on the parallel show Big Brother's Little Brother, also on Channel 4.

Kitten is currently living with her lesbian lover in Brighton, and describes herself as an anarchist, heavily involved in political activism and opposition to war, the class society and capitalism. Before becoming an anarchist, she used to be a member/supporter of the Alliance for Workers Liberty. She also claimed to be a £15.00-a-suck child prostitute in London at the age of 13, although her father denied this in the press, stating that she was in boarding school in Staffordshire at the time.

On entering the Big Brother house, Kitten refused to enter until she had seen her girlfriend and made obscene gestures to the crowd and the media. This action led her to be the first housemate to be booed on entry to the house. Her behaviour did not improve once in the house as she refused to obey the rules of Big Brother, leading to three official warnings.

In an effort to get Kitten to toe the line, Big Brother warned the housemates that they would evict any housemate without warning if Kitten continued to break the rules. However Kitten again broke the rules by daubing anti-war slogans on the wall of the house. On the second week, live on Channel 4, Kitten was finally evicted from the house for her persistent rule-breaking, initially refusing to leave. She was eventually removed from the house after Big Brother began reducing the £100,000 prize fund by £1,000 for every 10 seconds she stayed in the house. On leaving Kitten shouted at the media against the Queen and the Aristocracy.

Some days later she appeared in court regarding her non-payment of parking fines amounting to £225. She blamed it on Tony Blair's education policy, saying she could not pay the fines because of student debts.


Marco Sabba

Marco Jaye Sabba (born April 20, 1983) was a law student from Kingston University, and was particularly friendly with Nadia Almada, Michelle Bass and Emma Greenwood. The quartet called themselves the 'lipgloss bitches', but were dubbed Marco's harem by Victor. Also, he hilariously tripped his own mother by sliding along a slippery stage when he emerged from the Big Brother house. Marco has appeared in a West End stage show and reappeared on British Television since leaving the Big Brother house. He, along with fellow housemate Emma, provided a commentary of Celebrity Big Brother on Richard and Judy.

What Happened

Trailed as "Big Brother turns evil", it was controversial from the start. The house was smaller and more claustrophobic; there was one bedroom; and the prize money of £100,000 was reduced if housemates failed their tasks. Big Brother promised tougher challenges as well as surprises to test the minds of housemates. The makers were initially criticised for choosing contestants specifically to boost ratings, opting for people that were openly gay (Marco, Dan and Kitten), a transsexual (Nadia Almada), a former asylum seeker (Ahmed), and a person who claimed to be bisexual (Jason, although he later revealed that this had been a fabrication to improve his chances of being selected). This feeling soon dissipated to a large extent as the personalities of the housemates overshadowed these issues.

The housemates were all strong, opinionated characters. Kitten Pinder was evicted in the first week for constant rule-breaking. A fake eviction in the second week saw two of the housemates, Emma and Michelle, confined to the nearby "Big Brother Bedsit" where they could see and hear what was happening in the house without the others knowing. After their return to the house, scenes of aggression and violence erupted resulting in on-site security staff having to enter the house for the first time in the show's history. Some viewers of the live feed also called the police; after a short investigation, a joint statement by Hertfordshire police and producers Endemol said that they were satisfied with steps being taken to ensure housemates' safety and well-being. Police were also reportedly questioning each contestant as they left the house. Emma was moved back to the bed-sit and later evicted permanently. Several remaining housemates (Victor, Jason, Nadia, Vanessa, Marco) were given a formal warning. A psychologist on the show resigned, claiming that his warnings that Endemol's deliberate selection of housemates likely to cause conflict would lead to the fight went unheeded.

Following the fight the arguments continued, but nothing on the scale of what producers refer to as "Day 20" or "Fight Night". Following an appearance on MTV's Total Request Live Emma and Victor clashed again and had to be separated by the security on the show.

A surprise new housemate, Becki Seddiki, was evicted at the first opportunity. She had been told by Big Brother to (based on first impressions) kiss one of the housemates and that housemate would be up for eviction. This became known as the "Judas kiss". She chose popular housemate Michelle, leading to her being perceived by many as a traitor, and her fate was sealed.

The weekly live task was dropped in this series; housemates still competed in a "Saturday Challenge" though, but only highlights were shown. The week after Seddiki's eviction, Ahmed Aghil was evicted. The following week the flamboyant, aggressive Victor Ebuwa was evicted in a shock result that was mainly a result of a fight with Shell Jubin during a Wedding Day task. This task was also the scene for one of the most embarrassing Big Brother moments of recent times as wannabe-singer and choirister for the day, Michelle Bass, ad-libbed her way through the classical Pie Jesu.

The following week Michelle was evicted. The series was notable for her romance with Stuart Wilson. It is widely believed that they were the first couple to have full penetrative sex on the main Big Brother UK show (this having already taken place on Teen Big Brother in 2003), following two incidents where they made a crude tent under the dining table and discarded their microphones. However their actions were not visible, and both parties have refused to confirm or deny it. Michelle's self-confessed jealous behaviour gave some viewers the impression that Stuart was an unwilling participant in the affair, but he has stated since that this was not the case. The relationship continued after both had left the house. They have since split up.

Two days before the final day Stuart Wilson received only 7% of the votes to win, the lowest amount of the contestants in the house, and so was evicted in a surprise move mid-way through a party. He was told he was to leave immediately, without saying goodbye to the remaining housemates. He received a rapturous reception upon leaving the Big Brother house.

Nadia, as expected by all the bookmakers (she was favourite for six weeks) won Big Brother (UK) 2004 with 74% of the vote. She was greeted by an adoring crowd who chanted her name.

BB5 was also notable for the introduction by two of the housemates of the 'eviction pose', which led to several evictees doing poses during Big Brother 6. First Victor struck a 'cool' pose in keeping with his house 'gangsta' persona, leaning against the wall sideways on to the waiting audience. Later Dan (who could possibly have seen Victor before the inner doors closed) stood, head bowed, arms out, before lifting his head.

Makosi Musambasi


Makosi Musambasi (born 24 September 1980) is a registered cardiac nurse, who worked in a coronary care unit, originally from Zimbabwe but now living in High Wycombe. She was the subject of a story in The Sun during the final week which claimed that a talent agency had invoiced the producers of Big Brother for £609 for procuring her services; The Sun alleged that this proved she was in fact an actress rather than a genuine contestant. This was denied by Big Brother on the finale night, with the explanation that the money was paid to the talent agency (which does represent Makosi) for work relating to the supplementary show Big Brother's Big Mouth.

Makosi was one of the favourites to win the show in the first five weeks. On week 2 when all the housemates were up for eviction, Makosi received the least amount of public votes to evict. However in week six, Makosi shocked the nation by allegedly having sex in the pool with Anthony and later revealing that she thought she may be pregnant. At one point a tearful Makosi asked Big Brother for a pregnancy test, and contemplated that she would name the child 'Jacuzzi'. Anthony has strongly and repeatedly denied they had full intercourse.

On Day 76 Makosi removed her weave as the itching was proving too bothersome for her. Previous to this Makosi was occasionally sporting the wig she used in the "Spy" task. As her weave started to come out in pieces, a parody documenting the current state of the weave began on Big Brother's Little Brother called "Weave Watch".

Makosi came third with 8.9% of the vote. Her interview with Davina McCall was poorly received, with the audience booing and shouting "liar" all the way through. As the interview neared its end, chants of "off, off, off" were yelled by the crowd. 450 viewers complained about the interview and Davina McCall's unusually harsh manner with Makosi to Channel 4 or Ofcom [4]. Speaking of this matter, Makosi herself has admitted that she found the interview "distressing" and that she felt Davina had done nothing to support her when the crowd heckled her.

Since leaving the house, Makosi has spoken of her ill Mother, her regret of "having unprotected sex" with Anthony in the pool by admitting it was a bad example to the youth, especially being a nurse. As well as this, she is also due to attend an Edinburgh festival titled "I Had Sex On TV" to give a discussion on safe sex.

After the series ended, The Sun revealed that Makosi's former lover from before her appearance on Big Brother, with whom she had had unprotected sex, was HIV positive. Fearing that she (and possibly Anthony) may have contracted the disease, Makosi had herself tested. The result was negative.

In August 2005 the immigration services curtailed her visa as she had left her job as a cardiac nurse in order to appear on Big Brother. She appealed the ruling, claiming that she faced death if she returned to Zimbabwe. She retained the right to stay in the UK in November 2005. [5]

In March 2006, The People revealed that she has been working as a prostitute.


Mary O'Leary

Mary O'Leary (born 30 May 1974) is a psychic advisor, writer, and practising white witch from London. She was born to a former priest and nun in Dublin, Ireland. She claims to remember a past life in Atlantis and that she has been abducted by aliens seven times.

At first, bookmakers and betting exchange punters rated Mary as the least likely to win Big Brother this year. Makosi nominated her for eviction after passing a task and she therefore faced a public vote at the end of the first week along with Craig and was evicted on 3 June 2005, with 60% of the public vote.

After her eviction, newspaper articles were published revealing that Mary had previously worked in a massage parlour where money was offered for sexual favours. However this has not been confirmed by Mary herself. She now wants to rid of her "witch" image in hopes of becoming an actress.


Maxwell Ward


Maxwell Ward is an engineer from Islington, North London who supports Arsenal F.C.. He was the sixth evictee from the house, and left on July 8, with 57% of the public vote. During his time in the house, he formed a relationship with fellow housemate Saskia. It was rumoured that they had had sex a number of times, including under a blanket in the seating area and in their bed. That later resulted in an argument between the couple and Kemal, which ended in Maxwell throwing a glass of water over Kemal.

Maxwell was known as the "prankster" of the house, along with his fellow friend Anthony. For one of his pranks he claimed to have sprinkled a scab from his foot into Science's food, which caused massive controversy with viewers. The incident was investigated by Big Brother staff but no evidence was found to support it happening.




Orlaith McAllister

Orlaith McAllister (born April 26, 1979) is a business studies student and runner up in the 1999 Miss Northern Ireland contest to Zöe Salmon, the winner. She was Belfast's woman of the year in 2005. She entered the house on Day 32 after being voted in by Makosi (see Day 30).

After weeks of saying that she wanted to leave, she left voluntarily on Day 65 (July 30), the day after winning out on the public eviction against Kemal. She was replaced by Kinga.

Like Sam, she has since embarked on a career as a glamour model, appearing half-naked in weekly men's magazines such as Nuts and Zoo. Orlaith was one of the competitors in the 2006 Miss Great Britain contest, but, despite being favourite for the title lost out to Danielle Lloyd, Miss Warrington.




Roberto Conte


Roberto Conte is a 32 year-old teacher originally from Italy but since 1996, he has lived in Liverpool. He was once a paratrooper in the Italian army. He is a professional basketball player and windsurfer. He was also a finalist in the 1996 'Most Handsome Man in Italy' competition.

In the house he was famous for pouring a bowl of pasta over Maxwell's head, and calling Makosi 'a stupid bitch' followed by 'but I still love you'. He was the seventh person to enter the Big Brother house on 27 May 2005, and the fourth person to leave, on 24 June. He was up against Derek, and received 53% of the vote.

Since leaving the house Roberto has appeared on the chat show Heads Up with Richard Herring to discuss his time on BB and his love of poker.


Sam Heuston


Heuston is a 23 year-old marketing student from Cheam. She was the third person to be evicted from the Big Brother House, when faced against Derek and Roberto. She received 59% of the public vote when she was voted out on June 17 (Day 22).

Since leaving the BB house, Sam has had photo shoots in The News of the World newspaper, in weekly men's magazines such as Nuts, Maxim and Zoo, and has declined offers of work from Playboy TV. Also appeared on an episode of Italian Big brother in the audience.

Chronology


Weeks 1 and 2

The first housemate to enter the house was Derek Laud, a political figure on the right of the Conservative Party who was the first black Master of Foxhounds. He was followed by Lesley, Sam, Maxwell, Vanessa, Anthony, Roberto, Craig, Makosi, Mary, Science, Saskia and Kemal.

The "unlucky thirteenth" housemate was chosen randomly on Day One as Makosi, when she was first to respond to a call by Big Brother for "a housemate" to go to the diary room. Makosi was told she would automatically be up for eviction that week unless she managed to get the most nominations from her housemates, in which case she had to nominate two people for eviction. She was to keep this task secret. Makosi succeeded in her secret mission and chose Craig and Mary to be up for eviction on 3 June 2005. Mary was the viewers' choice for eviction.

During week 2, in a conversation with Lesley, Vanessa broke the game rules by discussing whom she would be nominating. Although the nominations still took place, Big Brother decided to ignore the results and ruled that, for the first time in the UK series, every housemate would be up for eviction. On 10 June 2005, Lesley was chosen to leave the house, although, if the nominations had not been nullified, she would not have been up for eviction. Davina McCall had been hinting at it being a "popularity contest", and the housemates all became aware of the public view of them because they could hear their individual names being called out, whereupon the crowd cheered or booed.


Weeks 3 and 4

In Week 3, Craig, Derek and Roberto were banned from nominating after talking about the nomination procedure, breaking a key rule. Clips of their discussions (mainly concerning Saskia) were played into the house via the plasma screen in the living room. Derek, Roberto and Sam were announced as the nominees for eviction on Day 19. Sam was the least popular housemate out of the three, and was evicted to a mixed reception on Day 22.

Week 4 saw the first traditional set of nominations of the series when, for the first time, all of the housemates' nominations were taken into account, and there was no twist to the format. Derek and Roberto received the most nominations from their fellow housemates, and Roberto was evicted on Day 29.


Weeks 5 and 6

On Day 30, less than 24 hours after Kinga, Eugene and Orlaith had entered the Secret Garden, a red button appeared in the main house, with a sign saying "Do not press this button" above it, and the words "Press here" around it. After much discussion amongst the housemates, Makosi pressed the button and was immediately called to the Diary Room. She entered the Secret Garden, met Kinga, Eugene and Orlaith, and was instructed to help them by stealing food and other supplies from the main house. If she failed to do so or was discovered by her fellow housemates, she would be automatically put up for the public vote.

Makosi was successful once more. She managed to sneak out food to the secret housemates, and also getting them into the house to shower without being caught. However, while Maxwell was awaiting a delivery of ten cans of cider, Makosi took it upon herself to go into the diary room to collect the items. After being given the cider, Makosi whipped up an idea to "create drama" and give the cans to the secret housemates. An hour later, Makosi pretended to be drunk and the result was a fierce argument between Saskia and Makosi. After the argument, it was now clear a divide was in the house. The incident has since been named "Cidergate" and caused as much of a rift between viewers as it did between housemates.

Before completing the task, Makosi had to evict one housemate from the secret garden – she chose Kinga who later returned to the Big Brother house on Day 66 to replace Orlaith who walked a day earlier.

In Week 5, for the third time, nominations had been discussed, this time between Maxwell and Anthony, so they were banned from nominating. Maxwell and Saskia, the "love birds", were put up for the public vote. As new housemates, Orlaith and Eugene were exempt. Saskia was evicted to a mixed reception on Day 36.

In Week 6, Maxwell was evicted, having received 57 per cent of the public vote, much to the surprise of the other housemates. Both Maxwell and Science were booed by the crowd when Davina announced their names before the result of the public vote. Maxwell was evicted to a mixed reception on Day 43.


Weeks 7 and 8

In Week 7 Big Brother played mind games with the housemates, informing them that during the week Big Brother would lie twice. Big Brother then told housemates that nominations that week were optional. This was Big Brother's first lie. All nominations are compulsory, so the housemates who did not nominate were put to the public vote as punishment. When the results of the nominations were announced Big Brother stated that Anthony, Craig and Kemal were up for eviction. This was Big Brother's second lie. In fact, these three were the only housemates to nominate, so it was everyone else who was subject to the public vote. As an extra twist, the housemates had to pick whom to evict out of the two people with the most votes. These turned out to be Makosi and Vanessa, with Makosi receiving the largest percentage of votes. All of the housemates with the exception of Kemal chose Vanessa to be the 7th person to leave, so on Day 50, a tearful Vanessa was evicted from the house.

In Week 8 nominations were made without any twists to the format. Science and Orlaith were the two housemates up for eviction with five and four votes respectively. Anthony and Eugene were the only housemates not to receive any votes this week. On Day 57, Science became the 8th housemate to be evicted from the Big Brother house. Science had a mixed reception by the public when his name had been called by Davina.


Weeks 9 and 10

For Week 9 the housemates were given a secret agent task to complete. Amusingly, Kemal, who had been convinced of there being a mole in the house ended up randomly being selected to be a double agent for this task. The housemates failed to realise this, so passed the task. Derek, whom they thought was the Double Agent, was sent into hiding overnight. Nominations were slightly altered this week; instead of housemates nominating who they wanted to put up for eviction they were nominating for those they wanted to save from the vote. Kemal and Orlaith gained just one vote each and so faced the public vote. Kemal received 51.1% of the public vote and so became the ninth evictee.

The next morning, on Day 65, Orlaith carried out her promise to leave the house voluntarily if not evicted by the public. She became the third contestant in UK Big Brother series to leave of their own accord. Less than a day after her departure, it was announced that a new housemate would be sent in to replace her. On Day 66, Kinga entered the house as Orlaith's replacement. As she was sent in, she was told that if she got at least one person to not nominate her this week, she will be immune from eviction and definitely be in the house for the final week and will be eligible to win. She managed to pass the task easily, receiving no nominations at all. The housemates up for eviction were Derek and Eugene, meaning Anthony, Craig, Kinga and Makosi were in the final week. On Day 71, Derek was evicted with 58% of the vote, becoming the 11th person to leave the house, and leaving Eugene in the final week as well. He was the last housemate to be voted out on nomination results.

Week 11

On Day 76, during dinner, Craig was evicted in a surprise mid-week eviction, for being the housemate to have received the least votes (only 4.1%) from the public to win Big Brother on Wednesday evening.

About one hour after Craig was evicted, Big Brother called a housemate to the Diary Room and Eugene was first to respond. He sat down behind a suitcase containing £50,000 in cash - half the actual winner's prize money. Big Brother told him he had the option of winning this half of the prize, leaving the other half for the winner. Big Brother told the remaining housemates that if he turned down the money, the prize money would double to £200,000. Eugene was given one minute to make to his decision while he was watched on screen by the rest of the housemates. After about 50 seconds, Eugene had made his decision and chose to take the £50,000. He later felt very guilty but his housemates assured him that he had done the right thing, and they would've done it too.

On Day 78, the final, Kinga received the least number of public votes (3.8% of the four-way total) and came in 4th place. The audience gave her a mixed reception. Makosi came third with 8.7% of the three-way vote. Her interview with Davina was poorly received, with the audience booing and shouting "liar" almost all the way through. As the interview neared its end, chants of "off, off, off," were yelled by the crowd. Eugene was next to leave, coming second with 42.7% of the final two-way vote. Upon leaving the house, Eugene's reception was extremely positive. With 57.3% of the two-way vote, Anthony was the winner of Big Brother 2005. He left the house elated at his own success - gyrating on the platform to the press.

The final drew a peak audience of 7.8 million viewers. The average audience for the final however was the lowest of all 6 Big Brother UK series.

Series 7


Big Brother series 7, broadcast in the United Kingdom (at Elstree Studios) in 2006, is the seventh season of the popular Big Brother reality television series. Shown on Channel 4 from May 18, 2006 to August 18, 2006, it is the longest series yet at thirteen weeks long. The series has been criticised by many different organisations for the introduction of a man with Tourette syndrome to the house and forbidding, for a short period, contestants to speak in Welsh. On the opening night, the programme obtained a peak audience of 8.1 million viewers, one million greater than the previous year's show.

The show's format is unchanged from previous years. A number of contestants (known as "housemates") live in a purpose-built house, totally isolated from the rest of the world. Each week, one is evicted from the house, by way of a public vote. The final housemate to leave wins the grand prize of £100,000.

Companion shows Big Brother's Big Mouth and Big Brother's Little Brother are retained this series, with the addition of Big Brother's Big Brain (a psychology show), hosted by Dermot O'Leary. Live action (with a 15-minute delay) is available by pressing the red button on E4. On Freeview this will be removed in mid-July and replaced with FilmFour.



Housemates

Of the seventeen housemates introduced into the house, fourteen entered on the launch night. This is greater than previous years. Due to the departures of Shahbaz and Dawn, two new housemates — Sam and Aisleyne — were introduced as part of the Meal or No Meal task.

Following the departure of George, there is some speculation about the possibility of another new housemate. It was rumoured that another contestant would be sent in with the Golden Ticket winner on Day 23 but this did not happen

This series overall has seen the largest number of housemates to leave without eviction, with three so far, beating the third series, where two housemates walked out and the fifth series, in which two were ejected.


Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace

Aisleyne (born December 1978) is a 27-year-old model and promotions girl from London, who entered on Day 12 as a prize won during the Meal or No Meal task in week 2. She sparked bitching among Imogen, Grace, and Sezer who vowed to give her a hard time in the house. Grace has since called her a "ghetto hoe" and a "wigger", claiming that Aisleyne wants to be black. Aisleyne also upset Mikey when she said she didn't miss Sezer after his eviction. On Big Brother's Big Brain, it was mentioned that Aisleyne was the most manipulative on the machiavellian test.


Bonnie Holt

Bonnie Holt (born February 1986), the first housemate to enter, is a 20-year-old care worker from Loughborough, working with sufferers of Down's syndrome. With a brother, Clyde, and sister, Lara, she is known for her strong Loughborough accent.[4] The first evictee, she was evicted on Day 9 with 78% of the vote.

During the week after her eviction, Big Brother's Little Brother had a "Bonnie's View on Everyfin and Everyfin" section, the title being based on Bonnie's rap in her audition tape. In this section, Bonnie tells the viewers her opinions on various institutions and events; including one section on the Monarchy where she wholeheartedly gave her support of "monks and that".


Dawn Blake

Dawn is a 38-year-old exercise scientist from Birmingham, who thinks people are "****". She claims to be the great great granddaughter of poet William Blake[citation needed], though William Blake had no children. In her audition for the show Dawn claimed that she thinks Gandhi, Bob Geldof and Mother Theresa are nice people and everyone else is a bastard. Similar to almost all the housemates, her personality in the house seems to differ greatly from her personality in her audition tape. On entry to the house, she claimed that if she were to be reincarnated, she would want to come back as either Jesus or Adolf Hitler.

Dawn was ejected from the house after a coded communication with the outside world, thereby breaking one of the fundamental rules of Big Brother. Dawn had asked to leave the Big Brother house after receiving the message; when producers were reluctant to let her leave, she told Big Brother about this rule-breaking, thus forcing them to remove her. When called to the diary room to be informed of her ejection, she consistently talked over Big Brother in order to emphasise that in her view she was not removed, but left voluntarily, which made sense given that she had received her coded message to leave the house. During her time in the house Dawn was subject to accusations by fellow housemate Nikki of causing a BO epidemic in the house's towels and clothes; however, Dawn did not find out about this during her stay in the house. When she was ejected from the house she said "Oh, shut up!" 37 times. An extended version of the conversation, shown later, revealed that she had calmly asked to leave voluntarily before this tirade.


George Askew

George is a 19-year-old student from London, whose friends include Princess Beatrice of York and Sam Sangster (son of the race-horse owner). A former student at Ludgrove School (he was there at the same time as Prince William and Prince Harry), he went onto the prestigious Harrow School. George is the son of a former private secretary to the Prince of Wales. He is a great-grandson of the 4th Earl of Ellesmere (through his paternal grandmother, Lady Susan Askew) and his great-uncle was the 6th Duke of Sutherland. One of his father's cousins married into the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and so it has been claimed he is linked to Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. [6]

On Day 13, George left the Big Brother house. He had told Grace his intentions earlier and she could not persuade him to stay. Before leaving he told Big Brother in the Diary Room: "My reason for leaving the Big Brother house is the thought of fame and how I would like to continue my private life - and fame is too much for me." [7] Since his exit, there has as yet been no official replacement for George, if it is to be believed that Sam and Aisleyne were replacements for Dawn and Shahbaz.


Glyn Wise

Glyn (born 9 January 1988) is an 18-year-old and the self-proclaimed "Sexiest Lifeguard in North Wales" and nudist from Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd. He entered the house in his lifeguard attire complete with buoyancy aid. His first language is Welsh and told Big Brother in the Diary Room that being in the house is improving his English. Despite the apparently relatively high regard with which Glyn seems to hold himself and his physical appearance, he has only achieved a little success with the opposite sex by receiving a lap dance and snog from 35-year-old Lea. He is the most intelligent housemate according to an intelligence test which all the housemates sat. Other tests revealed him to be the happiest and most perceptive housemate.


Grace Adams-Short

Grace (born August 1985) is a 20-year-old dance teacher from Plymouth but now living in London. A self-confessed Sloane Ranger. Grace has been getting close to both Mikey and George in particular, and it was disputed both in and outside of the house as to which one she will "pair up" with, until George left. While in the house, she stated that she would not model for Nuts or Zoo but would for something like FHM. She also claimed she would not pose topless due to her job. Her time in the house heralded a number of exposes on her life, including claims that she was a childhood bully, and a failed pop star [9].
Grace cried after hearing repeated chants of "Get Grace Out" from the eviction night crowd on Day 23. Some have suggested that Big Brother planted this group of people here on purpose, to cause upset. Although Grace is not particularly liked outside the house, she gets along with some of the housemates. She has been touted at the most hated housemate ever, even more so than Sezer, who gained a record 91.6% of votes. Bookmakers are offering odds of 1/50 on her being evicted and odds of 100/1 on her receiving 100% of votes.

Imogen Thomas

Imogen (born November 22, 1982) is a 23-year-old bar hostess and former beauty queen from Llanelli, South Wales. She was Miss Wales in 2003. Imogen claims to have had sexual relations with Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and former Manchester United footballer Dwight Yorke, with whom she reportedly finished the relationship because "he was no longer famous enough". Whilst he was in the house, Imogen spent most of her time with Sezer, and although the two shared several kisses, she never shared a bed.

After the fourth week, she had still not nominated once. There were no nominations in the first week. In the second and third weeks, she was banned from nominating after discussing nomination tactics, breaching one of the fundamental rules of Big Brother. She was also not allowed to nominate in the fourth week because only the Golden Housemate (Suzie) was allowed to that week.

Sezer Yurtseven

Sezer is a 26-year-old Turkish-Cypriot, claiming to be a stock broker and property developer from London. Sezer previously played cricket for Kent up to under-19 level. He is a former boxer, competing in white collar boxing [20], [21] and he claims he is the youngest person to have been on the London Stock Exchange floor at the age of 18 (which is odd given that the floor closed in 1986 when he was just six).

However, it turns out Sezer is not a complete fantasist. He is registered with the Financial Services Authority as having worked in commodities and foreign exchange trading at three different firms: a brokerage called ADM between 2001 and 2002, then as an independent trader at London Capital Group until 2004, and at a trading arcade called Schneider Trading Associates up to February 2006. Sezer is also a director of three companies, including the eponymous Cezer Trading and Seven International Property (both dormant having never traded). Given his self-declared wealth, it is seen as odd that the 26-year-old Sezer still lives at home with his mother. [22]. The Sun revealed that Sezer had been arrested for an alleged date rape in 2004 but the charge was dropped due to lack of evidence. [23]

Sezer was evicted on day 16 with a record 91.6% of the vote. It is believed that Sezer was evicted because he told fellow housemates that the girls watching would vote to keep him in. He even told Imogen that if they were both up for eviction, he would win because more girls vote than boys. It was this perceived smugness and vanity, and his confiding to housemates that he intended to "bully" at least one other housemate, that probably led to Sezer's downfall. He was self-assured right up to the moment his name was announced, at which point his mouth literally fell open. He walked out to boos and jeering.

In the week after eviction, Sezer tried to prove he was a nice guy afterall, by doing nice acts such as dating Vanessa Feltz and visiting an old people's home on Big Brother's Little Brother.




Shahbaz Chauhdry

Shahbaz (born March 1969) is a gay 37-year-old Glaswegian. He styles himself as "the paki poof" or a "wacky paki", a phrase that caused offence with at least one housemate. Shahbaz writes poetry in his spare time and longs to get it published one day. He also knits and despite classifying himself as unemployable, according to the Daily Star he once worked as an entertainer in a detention centre for illegal immigrants[citation needed]. He lived on £75 a week before entering the house.

Shahbaz was criticised by some housemates for what they regard as childish behaviour including throwing most of the food in the house in the bin. It was generally accepted that he did not adapt well to life in the house. Through his acting-out behaviour and "theatrical" monologues Shahbaz was cast aside by his fellow housemates, except Pete, Glyn and George. Shahbaz was being monitored by production team psychologists following comments that he intended to commit suicide whilst in the house [24] and he asked to leave the Big Brother house, departing on Day 6. On this final day in the house he was subjected to bullying and ostracisation by other housemates, which included them locking him outside in the garden, mocking him, stealing his clothes while he was swimming, insulting him, throwing his breakfast in the bin and then shouting at him for wasting food, and pointedly leaving the sitting room upon his entrance. All housemates present left the living room except George, who stayed in the room claiming that he was his "own man".

After leaving the house, it had become clear that Shahbaz understated his mental condition to psychologists, therefore cheating the selection process [25]. On BBLB Shahbaz said that during his stay his inner demons had come back "to bite him on the arse", but overall his view was that having been in the BB House was positive for him, and he claimed his behaviour was "Car crash television at it's finest" to which the presenter stated "Actually, it was rather disturbing". On BBBM the following day (26 May) he told Russell Brand that he had asked to be allowed to re-enter the BB House.




Susie Verrico

Susie is a 43-year-old model from Kent who entered the house with a Golden Ticket. Her husband had bought sixty boxes of Kit Kats, but they still didn't find one. He later paid £4000 for one. Susie also auditioned for the show, as well as Big Brother 3, 5 and 6 (series 5 of which she was a reserve housemate that was not entered). Because of this, several housemates recognised her from auditions and the press carried suggestions that the lottery which ended up with her entering the house was rigged.

As the Golden Housemate, Susie must abide by the Golden Rules:

1. Susie is forbidden to discuss the outside world with the other housemates.
2. Susie has her own Golden Quarters, including a Golden Bedroom, Golden Toilet and Golden Shower.
3. Susie must wear gold at all times.
4. Susie was the only housemate to nominate in week 4.

The other housemates knew this before the nominations, but were forbidden from telling Susie. The two housemates she chose (Nikki and Grace) therefore automatically face eviction. Any housemate that revealed this to Susie would also have faced eviction.

Criticism of Season 7

More than years previously, Big Brother has been criticised in the media for both its choice of housemates and its practice once the housemates are inside. Initially the programme faced accusations of exploiting a man with Tourette syndrome, by accepting him as a housemate.[40] The Tourette Syndrome Association of the U.K. claimed that this year's contestant, Pete Bennett, could suffer in the house, and also stated that parents were concerned that their children could be subjected to bullying as a consequence of Pete's behaviour inside the house. Channel 4 said Pete's inclusion could educate people about the syndrome.[41] And Pete's mum said "I'm angry when people say Pete shouldn't be on the show - that it is in someway exploitative. It's ridiculous. Do we want people with Tourette's to be accepted or marginalised?"

Further criticism arose when contestant Glyn Wise was reprimanded for communicating in his first language, Welsh, to housemate Imogen Thomas. Big Brother deemed this a form of 'code' and issued a warning to Glyn, who retorted "But Welsh is British". Following the incident, the Welsh Language Society complained to Channel 4, Ofcom and S4C, asking "are we moving towards a state where 'big brother' is watching over us and deciding what language we can and cannot speak?" [43]

The programme attracted more criticism on May 31 for putting "vulnerable" people in the Big Brother house. Shahbaz was revealed to be mentally and emotionally unstable and threatened to commit suicide on live television; Lea suffers from Body dysmorphic disorder and has previously attempted suicide; 19-year-old Sam has admitted to being ostracized by family members because of homosexuality, and possible gender identity disorder; and Nikki has suffered from anorexia and been sectioned in the past due to the condition. A spokeswoman for mental health charity SANE claimed that producers are "playing fast and loose with people's lives." A spokesperson for Rethink commented "The programme should not profit from people having a breakdown." A spokesman defended the show saying that a psychologist is always available for housemates
