    Year 1, 2000

The first series was an unexpected summer hit in 2000. The first series went on from Friday 14th July 2000 to Friday 15th September 2000. The most memorable moment occurred when attempts to influence voting by Nick Bateman (whom the tabloids nicknamed Nasty Nick) were uncovered by other housemates, who confronted him in a house meeting. He denied the allegations until the evidence was presented to him — housemate names, secretly written on scraps of paper hidden in his suitcase. Nick was removed from the house later that day by the show's producers for rule-breaking. A tabloid newspaper attempted to inform the housemates that Nick had been cheating by flying a remote controlled model helicopter into the house garden but the housemates were ordered to stay indoors.

Melanie Hill was seen to cultivate relationships with two different contestants. Hill avoided nomination until week 8 when all the remaining contestants except Anna were put up for eviction and she was voted out by a large margin.

The first series was solely viewed by the daily highlights programme. As a consequence many of the contestants complained afterwards that the series producers had 'created' characters for them through editing that did not correspond with their true personalities.

The housemate who led the 'outing' of Nick, Craig Phillips, went on to win the £70,000 prize as last remaining housemate. He donated the money to Joanne Harris, a close personal friend who needed a heart and lung transplant, due to having Down's Syndrome. As the British medical system refuses to provide heart/lung transplants to people with this condition (despite the fact that heart disease is an inherent part of Down's Syndrome), the only way for her to get the operation done was to pay for it privately abroad, which had been a financial impossibility before Craig won the show.

Since then, Craig has appeared on the UKTV Style makeover show Our House and the BBC One daytime show Big Strong Boys as a resident handyman. He has also made many cameo appearances in the Channel 4 sketch show, Bo' Selecta and released a Christmas Single (At This Time of Year) that reached number 14 in the UK charts. Runner-up Anna Nolan has presented several television shows in the UK and in her native Ireland. Two other housemates, Claire Strutton (who replaced Nick) and Tom McDermott, later had a child together but the relationship ended.

Nick Bateman and Craig Philips both appeared in the meta-reality TV show Back To Reality

Total number of votes in the final week: 7.5 million

    Year 2, 2001

Big Brother UK series 2 in 2001 was the second season of Big Brother in the UK, a reality show shown on Channel 4 in which a number of contestants live in an isolated house trying to avoid being evicted by the public with the aim of winning a large cash prize at the end of the run. With a much larger budget for the second series, after the huge success of the first, the house in Bow, East London was renovated and in May 2001, the new batch of housemates moved in.

In a twist to the show, an 11th housemate entered the house two weeks later (Day 16) - as the result of a public vote, in which Josh Rafter was chosen out of 3 wildcard housemates as the 11th contestant. During the first week, at the end of each episode, clips were shown of all three possible housemates:

    * Josh, who claimed "to have made a million and then lost it";
    * Anne, an older woman who promised sense and maturity in the house;
    * Natasha, a fiery young girl who promised "naughtiness" and other late-night antics

The trio were not allowed to watch the show or find out what was happening in the house until the winner of the vote entered so they were taken to Portugal up to that point.

The series saw lovebirds Paul Clarke and Helen Adams grow close over the time they spent in the house. Their relationship helped bring in ratings, as tabloids speculated on the possibility of their indulging in sexual shananigans in a manner similar to that seen in the show's continental equivalent.

Paul and Helen's romance wasn't the only ratings winner, the quick wit of Irish housemate Brian Dowling became an instant hit with viewers. Brian went on to win the series, and launch a successful television career. The public's continued affection for him was illustrated by his being voted the most popular Big Brother housemate from Series 1 to 5 in 2005. In a 2006 update to this poll he had, however, fallen to fourth.

Helen finished second in the show, her popularity was predominantly due to her dumb blonde persona. Famous quotes from Helen, known as 'Helenisms', have included "Is there Chicken in Chick Peas?" and "I like blinking, I do." Helen and Paul, after 5 years together, have since seperated, citing a lack of time apart as the reason for the breakup.[1] Brian went on to become the first openly gay man to present a children's television show in the UK when he joined SMTV Live.

    Series two tasks included:

    * Manning, fuelling, and keeping alight a fire
    * Learning first-aid techniques
    * Training a dog to do tricks
    * Dancing - it consisted of music being played, and housemates having a set amount of time to rush to a specially-constructed podium in the garden and dance with music. This was seen as popular and appropriate, and many tasks in future series have involved timed klaxons to perform certain rituals. A famous moment that inadvertently resulted from this time pressure occurred as Bubble raced to the podium, only to smash his knee into a chair as he did so.

Series two was also the first series to involve an interactive service, showing two live feeds, and two more with respective one and four hour time delays. This was not a 24-hour service, and the feed was stopped for a two-hour period every night, during which the show and another three programs aired. Endemol were also criticised for cutting the live feed when two intruders broke into the house on Day 39, and subsequently promised to tighten security.

Brian's winning margin was the highest ever garnered by a U.K winning contestant.

Total number of votes in the final week: 7.3 million

    Helen Adams Day 64 (Runner-up)

The third series saw two early walkouts, by housemates Sunita Sharma and Sandy Cumming; Sandy surprised his fellow housemates as well as the production team by urinating in a bin, scaling a wall and escaping over a roof. Sunita was replaced by Sophie Pritchard, and Sandy by Tim Culley.

Also this year the house was split into two for a time: those on one side had more luxuries and better food than those on the other. A weekly task, shown live on Saturday nights, determined which housemates lived on which side of the Rich House / Poor House divide. Kate Lawler and Jonny Regan spent more time on the poor side of the house than any other contestant, which may have fostered sympathy for them from the viewers.

Housemate Jade Goody became notorious for startling feats of ignorance. She harboured the belief that Mother Teresa was related to Albert Einstein (which she pronoucnced Heinzstein), and Sherlock Holmes (whom she believed invented toilets) and that Rio de Janiero was a person. Two of her most famous quotes, both of which indicate the paucity of her general knowledge are: "They were trying to use me as an escape goat" and "Do they speak Portuganese in Portugal?". It is emblematic of today's society that Jade Goody has come out the house the most well off, admitting in Sky One's show Why reality TV is good for you that she is a millionairess; the tabloids started a hate campaign of unseen proportions during her stay in the house, before switching to giving her sympathetic coverage when they began to fear that she might be psychologically damaged if she left the house to be met by the hatred they had helped to foment.

Alex also became a popular figure due to his obsession with cleaning the house, and ended up in Domestos commercials, singing along to KC & The Sunshine Band's hit That's The Way I Like It, following a famous, in-house incident in he sang along to the song to a camera as a door closed.

By far, the largest fad in the house was a game called Follow the Van. In one of the weekly shopping deliveries was a fluorescent Mystery Machine van, from cereal brand Sugar Puffs' Scooby Doo promotion. It was finally revealed on the reunion show that it involved following the van with your lips, and kissing where it came into contact with someone.

The eventual winner of the £70,000 prize was Kate Lawler, who went on to co-present Channel 4's breakfast TV show, RI:SE. Two other housemates, Sophie Pritchard and Lee Davey, later got married.

The final of this series drew 10 million viewers, the highest ever audience for a Channel 4 programme (excluding feature films).

Total number of votes in the final week: 8.6 million

    Kate Lawler Day 64 (Winner)
    Jonny Regan Day 64 (Runner-up)

The fourth series saw several surprises. Four housemates were nominated on the opening night after the housemates were told to make instant nominations based on first impressions, with every housemate receiving even one nomination facing the public vote; of the four, Anouska was evicted one week later. One housemate, Cameron Stout, accepted a challenge from Big Brother and discovered it meant spending a week in the Big Brother Africa house (one of the African housemates, Gaetano, spent some time in the UK house in return). There was a surprise double eviction, a surprise new housemate, and a surprise return by evicted housemate Jon Tickle for the last two weeks (he was not eligible to win, though he opted not to tell his housemates this). The biggest surprise was unplanned: a bomb scare led to the evacuation of the housemates for several hours.

The £70,000 prize was eventually won by Cameron. Several housemates later had presenting or acting jobs.

Despite the manifold surprises of this series, the press slated this series from day one. Many viewers jumped on the bandwagon branding the housemates boring with many viewing this series as the worst so far even though Big Brother six has received the lowest viewer ratings out of all the Big Brother series. Endemol would learn its lesson for the following year and would turn "evil" as well as looking to more extreme housemates.

After Big Brother, Jon Tickle and Ray Shah went on to have successful careers in the media industry. Jon Tickle presents Brainiac on UK television's Sky One, now in its third season. Ray Shah works both in the radio and television industry in Ireland. He presents his own radio slot on Dublin's Q102 and his own show on City Channel.

In a poll aired on E4 on May 13th 2006, Gos was voted the least poplular housemate of all time.

Total number of votes in the final week: 4.3 million

    Cameron Stout Day 64 (Winner)
    Ray Shah Day 64 (Runner-up)
    Scott Turner Day 64
    Steph Coldicott Day 64

    Federico Martone Day 29

    Anouska Golebiewski Day 8

Big Brother UK series 5 2004

    Ahmed Aghil

Ahmed Aghil (born March, 1960) fled to Britain from Somalia during the early 1990s, and is now a successful property developer. He gained a reputation for his eccentricity and his inexplicable outbursts of violence while in the house. He always remained least favourite to win, with odds ranging from 33/1 to 50/1.

Ahmed usually spent time alone in the garden, or asleep. He was fairly sedate, in sharp contrast to most of the house, meaning that he did not bond with anyone in the house much, and indeed was fairly irritated by many of the housemates.

After a few weeks of participation in the programme, Ahmed began to have spontaneous violent outbursts, in which he threw plates around, chopped the head of a papier-mâché statue off with a spade and screamed out loud (the first two were in response to the playing into the house of a crying baby, the first time to try to wake the housemates up, the second time to try to get them to talk after they refused to speak for a day in protest at failing a task. He explained his behaviour later on by stating that as a father, he found the sound of a crying baby extremely disturbing). It eventually became clear that he was under enormous psychological pressure in the house, and that he was becoming increasingly deranged-he recognised this himself, but refused to leave the house of his own accord, since he harboured a dream of having an eviction night and interview like all other evictees (he referred to this as "his night"). Eventually, it got to the point where he was asking the other housemates to nominate him for eviction. Even when he did so, he was not evicted.

He became somewhat unpopular in the house, with the public turning against him after an incident in the house during a weekly "Big Brother Boot Camp" task, in which he was assigned the role of a private (along with 5 other housemates) while two others were assigned the role of sergeant. He refused to do several activities as required by the task, came to blows with (more popular) sergeant Michelle and eventually tried to instigate a military coup. In an interview with the Daily Mirror after the show had finished, he said that his reluctance to take part in the task was due to the memories of the militia in his own country that contributed to his claim for asylum in the UK. Despite this, the group passed the task: however, in accordance with the rules of the task, the privates were immediately up for eviction. He was evicted with 56% of the vote. In his post-eviction interview, he remarked that he did not expect to remain in the house past the third week.
    [edit]

    Becki Seddiki

Becki Seddiki (born July 24, 1970) is a singer-songwriter and musician from London, and has Moroccan blood. Her choice of Michelle as recipient of her 'Judas kiss' was hugely unpopular with viewers and resulted in her being evicted at the earliest opportunity.

Since Big Brother, Becki has landed a twice weekly radio DJing slot on a radio station in London (from 2006 onwards) and is still recording her music and performing at several gigs all over the UK.
    [edit]

    Emma Greenwood

One of the lip gloss bitches, Emma (born October 12, 1983) was removed from the house for safety reasons after the notorious "fight night" in which she played a leading role. Emma is originally from Oldham, Greater Manchester and had a minor singing career before and after her time in the house.
    [edit]

    Jason Cowan

The runner up, he formed a friendship with Victor Ebuwa and Ahmed Aghill that led to the formation of a prominent clique known as the Jungle Cats. Cowan's presence at the end brought a balance to the house after all the villains had left and only friends or people that sat on the fence were left. He spent most of his time laying in bed and bitching about the other housemates with Victor, shaving every concievable part of his body for lengthy periods of time, and exercising almost constantly.

He was born on November 1, 1973, in Hamilton, South Lanarkshire. He was in Five's recent show Commando VIP, in which he and five other celebrities had to complete SAS-style tasks.

    Kathryn "Kitten" Pinder

Kathryn ("Kat", or "Kitten") Pinder (born October 13, 1979) entered the house on May 28, 2004 and was evicted one week later on June 4 after continuously breaking house rules and receiving three formal warnings. After her eviction, Kitten occasionally appeared on the parallel show Big Brother's Little Brother, also on Channel 4.

Kitten is currently living with her lesbian lover in Brighton, and describes herself as an anarchist, heavily involved in political activism and opposition to war, the class society and capitalism. Before becoming an anarchist, she used to be a member/supporter of the Alliance for Workers Liberty. She also claimed to be a £15.00-a-suck child prostitute in London at the age of 13, although her father denied this in the press, stating that she was in boarding school in Staffordshire at the time.

On entering the Big Brother house, Kitten refused to enter until she had seen her girlfriend and made obscene gestures to the crowd and the media. This action led her to be the first housemate to be booed on entry to the house. Her behaviour did not improve once in the house as she refused to obey the rules of Big Brother, leading to three official warnings.

In an effort to get Kitten to toe the line, Big Brother warned the housemates that they would evict any housemate without warning if Kitten continued to break the rules. However Kitten again broke the rules by daubing anti-war slogans on the wall of the house. On the second week, live on Channel 4, Kitten was finally evicted from the house for her persistent rule-breaking, initially refusing to leave. She was eventually removed from the house after Big Brother began reducing the £100,000 prize fund by £1,000 for every 10 seconds she stayed in the house. On leaving Kitten shouted at the media against the Queen and the Aristocracy.

Some days later she appeared in court regarding her non-payment of parking fines amounting to £225. She blamed it on Tony Blair's education policy, saying she could not pay the fines because of student debts.

    Marco Sabba

Marco Jaye Sabba (born April 20, 1983) was a law student from Kingston University, and was particularly friendly with Nadia Almada, Michelle Bass and Emma Greenwood. The quartet called themselves the 'lipgloss bitches', but were dubbed Marco's harem by Victor. Also, he hilariously tripped his own mother by sliding along a slippery stage when he emerged from the Big Brother house. Marco has appeared in a West End stage show and reappeared on British Television since leaving the Big Brother house. He, along with fellow housemate Emma, provided a commentary of Celebrity Big Brother on Richard and Judy.

    Season 5 part 2

    Michelle Bass

Michelle Bass (born February 2, 1981 in Newcastle) was a member of the 'Lipgloss Bitches', along with Marco Sabba, Emma Greenwood and Nadia Almada. She was best known for her the spell in the bedsit with Emma Greenwood, as well as her relationship with Stuart Wilson - they allegedly became the first couple to have sex live on British television after Michelle fashioned a "fort" so they could have some privacy from the cameras.

After Big Brother, Michelle enjoyed a relationship with Stuart Wilson (which has since ended), and became one of OK Magazine's most valuable exports. Gracing the press almost daily, Michelle was everywhere. Still pursuing a glamour modelling career, Michelle had breast implants and presented on Television X, a soft porn channel. Shortly after this her dreams of being a glamour model were fulfilled when Michelle landed her first front covers of Nuts Magazine, as well as several other lads mags.

2 years on (2006) from her show in 2004, Michelle is still one of the most heavily publicised contestants from Big Brother, and one of few from BB5 still actively working. She is one of the success stories of Big Brother.

Her official website was launched in Spring 2006, showing perhaps the demand for Michelle has risen.

    Stuart Wilson

Stuart Wilson (born April 28, 1984) was initially a member of the jungle cats, although when things got serious with Michelle, he was neither here nor there. He was best known in the house for his relationship with Michelle and for his constant need to dress up and child-like personality. Stuart was the first contestant in UK Big Brother history to not receive a single nomination from his peers.

During one task, Stuart was given a cowboy outfit which he fell in love with; particularly with the hat. After eventually giving it back to Big Brother, he asked for it back again. They gave him an oversized one instead, and then a miniature one. Later on, when the contestents refused to co-operate with Big Brother, they put the TVs on and showed them burning the original hat, much to the distress of Stuart. Throughout all this, up until the burning, Big Brother's Little Brother held a campaign for Stuart to get his hat back. Soon after Stuart's eviction, Michelle bought him a cowboy hat.

Michelle and Stuart enjoyed a year long relationship, in which they attended showbiz parties and covered many articles in glossy magazines. Soon after the sixth series of Big Brother started, it was revealed these two had split up.

    Vanessa Nimmo

Vanessa Nimmo (born 12 August 1977) is a former double South African archery champion. She was born in Cape Town but moved to the UK in 1994. Since being on Big Brother, she has been dating Ben Fogle. During "Fight Night", it took half of the housemates to hold Nadia back after Vanessa had supposedly slapped her. Like Michelle Bass, Vanessa also had breast implants which prompted her to do raunchy photoshoots with fellow housemate Shell Jubin including a September 2005 DVD release "Shell and Vanessa laid bare" in which she happily was photographed topless for the first time.
    [edit]

    Shell Jubin

Soon after the series ended she appeared alongside Vanessa appearing in raunchy photoshoots, she has since returned to higher education studying for a masters degree in Art History. In September 2005 Shell and Vanessa released an 18-rated DVD named "Shell and Vanessa laid bare".

    Victor Ebuwa

Victor Ebuwa (born January 17, 1981) was the co-Leader of the 'Jungle Cats', styling himself as 'Slick (Vic)' in the house, and formed a close partnership with Jason Cowan, and also with Ahmed Aghil. He was known for his memorable one-liners and rap/-izzle-style speech, for speaking his mind and having a game plan. He is also probably the first housemate ever to openly discuss his plan in the Diary Room in the house.

On day 57 he was evicted following an argument with fellow housemate Shell Jubin, after which a fan of Victor's sent death threats to Shell's parents house. Previous to this argument Victor was second favourite to win the show.

Many TV critics, including Ally Ross (The Sun TV Critic), have credited Victor for saving the Big Brother UK franchise, thanks to stirring controversy and his 'straight talking' attitude towards housemates. The previous year's show was slammed by critics for being dull, leading to record low viewing figures and a subsequent drop in eviction votes. Viewing figures increased this year to an average of 7 million every night.

    Season 5 part 3

    What Happened

Trailed as "Big Brother turns evil", it was controversial from the start. The house was smaller and more claustrophobic; there was one bedroom; and the prize money of £100,000 was reduced if housemates failed their tasks. Big Brother promised tougher challenges as well as surprises to test the minds of housemates. The makers were initially criticised for choosing contestants specifically to boost ratings, opting for people that were openly gay (Marco, Dan and Kitten), a transsexual (Nadia Almada), a former asylum seeker (Ahmed), and a person who claimed to be bisexual (Jason, although he later revealed that this had been a fabrication to improve his chances of being selected). This feeling soon dissipated to a large extent as the personalities of the housemates overshadowed these issues.

The housemates were all strong, opinionated characters. Kitten Pinder was evicted in the first week for constant rule-breaking. A fake eviction in the second week saw two of the housemates, Emma and Michelle, confined to the nearby "Big Brother Bedsit" where they could see and hear what was happening in the house without the others knowing. After their return to the house, scenes of aggression and violence erupted resulting in on-site security staff having to enter the house for the first time in the show's history. Some viewers of the live feed also called the police; after a short investigation, a joint statement by Hertfordshire police and producers Endemol said that they were satisfied with steps being taken to ensure housemates' safety and well-being. Police were also reportedly questioning each contestant as they left the house. Emma was moved back to the bed-sit and later evicted permanently. Several remaining housemates (Victor, Jason, Nadia, Vanessa, Marco) were given a formal warning. A psychologist on the show resigned, claiming that his warnings that Endemol's deliberate selection of housemates likely to cause conflict would lead to the fight went unheeded.

Following the fight the arguments continued, but nothing on the scale of what producers refer to as "Day 20" or "Fight Night". Following an appearance on MTV's Total Request Live Emma and Victor clashed again and had to be separated by the security on the show.

A surprise new housemate, Becki Seddiki, was evicted at the first opportunity. She had been told by Big Brother to (based on first impressions) kiss one of the housemates and that housemate would be up for eviction. This became known as the "Judas kiss". She chose popular housemate Michelle, leading to her being perceived by many as a traitor, and her fate was sealed.

The weekly live task was dropped in this series; housemates still competed in a "Saturday Challenge" though, but only highlights were shown. The week after Seddiki's eviction, Ahmed Aghil was evicted. The following week the flamboyant, aggressive Victor Ebuwa was evicted in a shock result that was mainly a result of a fight with Shell Jubin during a Wedding Day task. This task was also the scene for one of the most embarrassing Big Brother moments of recent times as wannabe-singer and choirister for the day, Michelle Bass, ad-libbed her way through the classical Pie Jesu.

The following week Michelle was evicted. The series was notable for her romance with Stuart Wilson. It is widely believed that they were the first couple to have full penetrative sex on the main Big Brother UK show (this having already taken place on Teen Big Brother in 2003), following two incidents where they made a crude tent under the dining table and discarded their microphones. However their actions were not visible, and both parties have refused to confirm or deny it. Michelle's self-confessed jealous behaviour gave some viewers the impression that Stuart was an unwilling participant in the affair, but he has stated since that this was not the case. The relationship continued after both had left the house. They have since split up.

Two days before the final day Stuart Wilson received only 7% of the votes to win, the lowest amount of the contestants in the house, and so was evicted in a surprise move mid-way through a party. He was told he was to leave immediately, without saying goodbye to the remaining housemates. He received a rapturous reception upon leaving the Big Brother house.

Nadia, as expected by all the bookmakers (she was favourite for six weeks) won Big Brother (UK) 2004 with 74% of the vote. She was greeted by an adoring crowd who chanted her name.

BB5 was also notable for the introduction by two of the housemates of the 'eviction pose', which led to several evictees doing poses during Big Brother 6. First Victor struck a 'cool' pose in keeping with his house 'gangsta' persona, leaning against the wall sideways on to the waiting audience. Later Dan (who could possibly have seen Victor before the inner doors closed) stood, head bowed, arms out, before lifting his head.

    Final vote breakdown:

    1. Nadia: 3,863,696
    2. Jason: 1,335,246
    3. Dan: 685,995
    4. Shell: 347,051

Total number of votes in the final week: 6.3 million

The sixth series began on 27 May 2005 and ended on 12 August of the same year. The broadcaster, Channel 4, made their previously subscription-only E4 channel available on Freeview from the start of this series.

    Housemates

    Anthony Hutton

Anthony Hutton is a 23-year-old 70s dancer from Consett in County Durham. Anthony won Big Brother 6, narrowly beating Eugene and walking away with £50,000. During his stay in the house, he became best friends with "bunny-boiler" Craig, who some thought was obsessing over him. In Week 6, it was rumoured that he had had sex with Makosi in the jacuzzi. Makosi denied this at first, but later claimed she was "95% certain" that she was pregnant with his baby. During their final interviews on leaving the house, Kemal, Craig (who was in the pool at the time) and Anthony all denied the couple had had sex. However, Makosi's side of the story has been backed up in print by Orlaith; Maxwell believes they had sex, and Craig also thought this at the time (it is not known when he changed his mind). Makosi sold her story to the News of the World saying she did have sex with Anthony. The same day the story went on sale, both contestants appeared on the BBLB Reunion show. During his interview, Anthony shouted over to Makosi 'You're a liar!' and had to be told to calm down by the show's presenter, Dermot O'Leary.
Anthony and Maxwell in the Diary Room. Before Max left, Ant looked up to him the most

Anthony has the unusual honour of being the first Big Brother UK winner to be booed before entering the house, due to his insistence on posing and performing his trademark dance moves for the crowd (once in the house he told his fellow housemates that the security guards who told him to move along were the ones who were being booed). Since leaving Big Brother, Anthony refuses to criticise Craig, perhaps recognising how much Craig helped him to win. Craig has said in a radio interview that he's not friends with Ant any more.

    Craig Coates

During his time in the house, Craig, a hairdresser from Cromer, Norfolk, became famous in the media for his allegedly possessive nature over fellow housemate Anthony, earning himself the title of "Bunny Boiler". Just missing out on the final, Craig was evicted with the least number of votes to win two days before the final. Like Kemal, in his interview with Davina he did not confirm his sexuality although to some he left it pretty obvious that he was gay. He said he had difficulty admitting his sexuality and refused to do so. Asked about his feelings for Anthony, he confessed to having a crush on him in the beginning of the show - but adamantly said he saw him as a friend.
    [edit]

    Derek Laud

Derek Laud is a 41-year-old speechwriter for the Conservative Party originally from Battersea but now living in Kensington.

Derek was a unique member of the house and his dry sense of humour made him popular with viewers. During his time in the house, he formed close friendships with fellow housemates Kemal, Eugene and Roberto but was disliked by others, particularly Orlaith and Anthony. In his role as House quizmaster, many viewers felt that Derek's prestigious accent lent a spurious air of authority to his somewhat less than perfect general knowledge. This meant that, inside the BB6 House, his answers — even when wrong — were nearly always accepted by the housemates without question.

The last housemate to be up for eviction, he was voted out on Day 71 (August 5), receiving 58% of the vote against his friend Eugene. Derek not only got the best reaction from the crowds on his eviction night but also on the last night. He surpassed all the others in the volume of the cheering. Kemal was a guest at Derek’s 41st Birthday party a few days later.

New Nation reported that despite a request for interviews, Derek Laud had refused to talk to them or to the 'black media' generally.

    Eugene Sully

Eugene Mark Sully (born November 30, 1977) is a service planning engineer for the BBC in the Research & Development department from Crawley in West Sussex. He attained a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Engineering 2000 from the University of Sussex and helped a lot with the student radio station. He is currently in training to become a pilot. Although Eugene came second in BB6, he emerged from the house £50,000 richer after being offered (and accepting) half of the prize fund in the final week.

Eugene entered the house on Day 32 after being voted in by Makosi (see Day 30). During his time in the house, he formed close friendships with fellow housemates Derek and Kinga.

Since leaving the BB house, Eugene has presented the Mercury FM's breakfast show and appeared on Blue Peter, Top of the Pops and the children's show Dick and Dom in da Bungalow as well as being a contestant on the quiz show Eggheads.

In 2006, Sully stood in the council election for the ward of Furnace Green, Crawley, West Sussex, as a candidate for the Labour Party. He came second to Michael Weatherley, the Conservative candidate, who polled 1004 votes to Sully's 457. [1] According to BBC News Online, it is believed Sully wishes to stand as a Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Labour Party, at the forthcoming General Election.

    Lesley Sanderson

Lesley Sanderson is a sales assistant from Huddersfield. She was the second person to be evicted from the Big Brother house, on June 10 (Day 15), gaining 36% of the public vote.

It was widely suspected Lesley's eviction was cemented over how she bullied fellow contestant Sam. Both were unpopular with the public, but viewers did not approve of her treatment towards Sam. Such behaviour including making scathing comments of Sam whenever she was in the room and also stealing her make-up bag. Lesley was repeatedly warned by Big Brother after she had made verbal threats towards her.

In Autumn of 2005, Lesley was allegedly raped in a hotel in Leeds[2]. Also she claims that since Big Brother she has struggled to cope with fame and has developed a drinking problem.

Since leaving the Big Brother House, Lesley is embarking on a singing career. She was due to record a single called Hated and plans to write a book about her experiences. The People reports that she was paid £15,000 for Big Brother.

    Kemal Shahin

Kemal Shahin (born November, 1985) is a Turkish Cypriot from London. He is a university student living in Liverpool and a part time belly dancer. When quizzed by Davina about his sexuality, he answered, "I don't know. Who can say? I'm looking for a man." (Despite this, he was photographed many months later dating fellow contestant Kinga (see below)).

Kemal was mostly remembered for his flamboyant fashion sense, his outspoken manner, catty arguments with other housemates and his hilarious visits to the diary room. During his stay in the house, he became good friends with Derek Laud whom he fondly referred to as Grandpa.

He was the thirteenth person to enter the Big Brother house (dressed in a red sari) and the ninth to leave (in a green sari) on July 29, gaining 51.5% of the public vote.

He appeared on Sky News in early 2006 with fellow contestant Makosi Musambasi where they stunned the female newsreader with their bickering.

    Kinga Karolczak

A 20 year old, half Polish half Kuwaiti market researcher, from London. Kinga began her stay in the Secret Garden with Orlaith and Eugene but was not chosen to enter the house by Makosi. The day after Orlaith walked from the show, however, she was sent into the house as a replacement. Kinga settled into the house fairly quickly, however after a night of excessive drinking (of non-alcoholic wine) she apparently sexually stimulated herself on the lawn with an empty wine bottle, much to the horror of the other housemates and public alike - generating 200 complaints. Aside from this, she made an unlikely friendship with Derek, claimed she could sing an octave higher than Mariah Carey and formed a comical duo with Eugene. Kinga finished in fourth place.

Since the house Kinga has featured in many newspaper and magazine articles, and has also claimed to have fallen in love with fellow BB6 contestant Kemal Shahin. She recently played at the Celebrity World Cup Soccer Six Tournament.

    Makosi Musambasi

Makosi Musambasi (born 24 September 1980) is a registered cardiac nurse, who worked in a coronary care unit, originally from Zimbabwe but now living in High Wycombe. She was the subject of a story in The Sun during the final week which claimed that a talent agency had invoiced the producers of Big Brother for £609 for procuring her services; The Sun alleged that this proved she was in fact an actress rather than a genuine contestant. This was denied by Big Brother on the finale night, with the explanation that the money was paid to the talent agency (which does represent Makosi) for work relating to the supplementary show Big Brother's Big Mouth.

Makosi was one of the favourites to win the show in the first five weeks. On week 2 when all the housemates were up for eviction, Makosi received the least amount of public votes to evict. However in week six, Makosi shocked the nation by allegedly having sex in the pool with Anthony and later revealing that she thought she may be pregnant. At one point a tearful Makosi asked Big Brother for a pregnancy test, and contemplated that she would name the child 'Jacuzzi'. Anthony has strongly and repeatedly denied they had full intercourse.

On Day 76 Makosi removed her weave as the itching was proving too bothersome for her. Previous to this Makosi was occasionally sporting the wig she used in the "Spy" task. As her weave started to come out in pieces, a parody documenting the current state of the weave began on Big Brother's Little Brother called "Weave Watch".

Makosi came third with 8.9% of the vote. Her interview with Davina McCall was poorly received, with the audience booing and shouting "liar" all the way through. As the interview neared its end, chants of "off, off, off" were yelled by the crowd. 450 viewers complained about the interview and Davina McCall's unusually harsh manner with Makosi to Channel 4 or Ofcom [4]. Speaking of this matter, Makosi herself has admitted that she found the interview "distressing" and that she felt Davina had done nothing to support her when the crowd heckled her.

Since leaving the house, Makosi has spoken of her ill Mother, her regret of "having unprotected sex" with Anthony in the pool by admitting it was a bad example to the youth, especially being a nurse. As well as this, she is also due to attend an Edinburgh festival titled "I Had Sex On TV" to give a discussion on safe sex.

After the series ended, The Sun revealed that Makosi's former lover from before her appearance on Big Brother, with whom she had had unprotected sex, was HIV positive. Fearing that she (and possibly Anthony) may have contracted the disease, Makosi had herself tested. The result was negative.

In August 2005 the immigration services curtailed her visa as she had left her job as a cardiac nurse in order to appear on Big Brother. She appealed the ruling, claiming that she faced death if she returned to Zimbabwe. She retained the right to stay in the UK in November 2005. [5]

In March 2006, The People revealed that she has been working as a prostitute.

    Mary O'Leary

Mary O'Leary (born 30 May 1974) is a psychic advisor, writer, and practising white witch from London. She was born to a former priest and nun in Dublin, Ireland. She claims to remember a past life in Atlantis and that she has been abducted by aliens seven times.

At first, bookmakers and betting exchange punters rated Mary as the least likely to win Big Brother this year. Makosi nominated her for eviction after passing a task and she therefore faced a public vote at the end of the first week along with Craig and was evicted on 3 June 2005, with 60% of the public vote.

After her eviction, newspaper articles were published revealing that Mary had previously worked in a massage parlour where money was offered for sexual favours. However this has not been confirmed by Mary herself. She now wants to rid of her "witch" image in hopes of becoming an actress.

    Maxwell Ward

Maxwell Ward is an engineer from Islington, North London who supports Arsenal F.C.. He was the sixth evictee from the house, and left on July 8, with 57% of the public vote. During his time in the house, he formed a relationship with fellow housemate Saskia. It was rumoured that they had had sex a number of times, including under a blanket in the seating area and in their bed. That later resulted in an argument between the couple and Kemal, which ended in Maxwell throwing a glass of water over Kemal.

Maxwell was known as the "prankster" of the house, along with his fellow friend Anthony. For one of his pranks he claimed to have sprinkled a scab from his foot into Science's food, which caused massive controversy with viewers. The incident was investigated by Big Brother staff but no evidence was found to support it happening.

    Orlaith McAllister

Orlaith McAllister (born April 26, 1979) is a business studies student and runner up in the 1999 Miss Northern Ireland contest to Zöe Salmon, the winner. She was Belfast's woman of the year in 2005. She entered the house on Day 32 after being voted in by Makosi (see Day 30).

After weeks of saying that she wanted to leave, she left voluntarily on Day 65 (July 30), the day after winning out on the public eviction against Kemal. She was replaced by Kinga.

Like Sam, she has since embarked on a career as a glamour model, appearing half-naked in weekly men's magazines such as Nuts and Zoo. Orlaith was one of the competitors in the 2006 Miss Great Britain contest, but, despite being favourite for the title lost out to Danielle Lloyd, Miss Warrington.

    Roberto Conte

Roberto Conte is a 32 year-old teacher originally from Italy but since 1996, he has lived in Liverpool. He was once a paratrooper in the Italian army. He is a professional basketball player and windsurfer. He was also a finalist in the 1996 'Most Handsome Man in Italy' competition.

In the house he was famous for pouring a bowl of pasta over Maxwell's head, and calling Makosi 'a stupid bitch' followed by 'but I still love you'. He was the seventh person to enter the Big Brother house on 27 May 2005, and the fourth person to leave, on 24 June. He was up against Derek, and received 53% of the vote.

Since leaving the house Roberto has appeared on the chat show Heads Up with Richard Herring to discuss his time on BB and his love of poker.

    Sam Heuston

Heuston is a 23 year-old marketing student from Cheam. She was the third person to be evicted from the Big Brother House, when faced against Derek and Roberto. She received 59% of the public vote when she was voted out on June 17 (Day 22).

Since leaving the BB house, Sam has had photo shoots in The News of the World newspaper, in weekly men's magazines such as Nuts, Maxim and Zoo, and has declined offers of work from Playboy TV. Also appeared on an episode of Italian Big brother in the audience.

    Saskia Howard-Clarke

Saskia Howard-Clarke is a "promotions girl" from London. She was the fifth evictee from the house, on July 1. Saskia was put up for eviction with Maxwell, and gained a massive 71% of the public vote. She had received the highest percentage of any eviction vote in the whole series.

In the first couple of weeks, Saskia proved to be popular with housemates and viewers alike. In week two when all of the housemates were up for eviction due to rule breaking, Saskia heard the positive public reception when the crowd cheered her name. However things took a wrong turn when a divide in the house occurred and two members of her group (Anthony and Maxwell) were banned from nominations - leaving Saskia in a vulnerable position of being nominated by the other group who sided with Makosi after a heated confrontation between the two. Some of the comments Saskia made in her argument with Makosi sparked a debate about racism being a factor in the house. In her post-eviction interview with Davina, she later denied the matter by stating the fact that she was a quarter-Sri Lankan, a statement that did not justify or alter the opinions of many viewers. Saskia's favourite quotes included "End Of" and "Game ON".

True to Big Brother fashion, Saskia and Maxwell have continued their relationship since they left the house.

    Kieron "Science" Harvey

Science is a music and self-styled "entertainment entrepreneur" from Chapeltown, Leeds. He has a band called Urban Productions and won a BBC award for documentary filmmaking.

As one of the loudest and argument-prone of the housemates, Science found himself up for eviction twice (another two times when most of the housemates were up for eviction) during his stay at the Big Brother house. He was mostly known for his philosophical views of life, love of music (he also rapped quite a lot in the house) and a dogmatic nature that caused him to clash with almost every housemate in the house.

In his final week in the house he found himself being ignored by most of the other housemates. Derek Laud appeared to play a leading role in his isolation. He was finally evicted in week eight when up against Orlaith McAllister in the second closest public vote in Big Brother history with only one percent between the two housemates (50.5%/49.5%), on July 22..

    Vanessa Layton-McIntosh

Vanessa Layton-McIntosh is a 19 year-old student from Croydon. She was the seventh person to be evicted from the house on July 15, chosen to leave by her fellow housemates, when faced against Makosi. (See Week 7). This was the second week Vanessa had faced eviction.

In week one, Vanessa was friends with Craig and Lesley. The three of them formed "Team Britney". However, after her nominations blunder in week two, the pair had turned their back on Vanessa. By week three, Craig had stopped talking to her completely. Following the break up of "Team Britney", she formed an alliance with Makosi and Kemal but soon started bitching about Kemal..

Vanessa was rather unpopular with the viewers most particularly, and it was said that all she did was eat, sleep and talk about the other housemates behind their backs. When Vanessa heard the crowd booing her as Davina said her name, the reaction on her face caused the crowd to break into united laughter on two occasions.

    Season 6 continued

    Chronology

    Weeks 1 and 2

The first housemate to enter the house was Derek Laud, a political figure on the right of the Conservative Party who was the first black Master of Foxhounds. He was followed by Lesley, Sam, Maxwell, Vanessa, Anthony, Roberto, Craig, Makosi, Mary, Science, Saskia and Kemal.

The "unlucky thirteenth" housemate was chosen randomly on Day One as Makosi, when she was first to respond to a call by Big Brother for "a housemate" to go to the diary room. Makosi was told she would automatically be up for eviction that week unless she managed to get the most nominations from her housemates, in which case she had to nominate two people for eviction. She was to keep this task secret. Makosi succeeded in her secret mission and chose Craig and Mary to be up for eviction on 3 June 2005. Mary was the viewers' choice for eviction.

During week 2, in a conversation with Lesley, Vanessa broke the game rules by discussing whom she would be nominating. Although the nominations still took place, Big Brother decided to ignore the results and ruled that, for the first time in the UK series, every housemate would be up for eviction. On 10 June 2005, Lesley was chosen to leave the house, although, if the nominations had not been nullified, she would not have been up for eviction. Davina McCall had been hinting at it being a "popularity contest", and the housemates all became aware of the public view of them because they could hear their individual names being called out, whereupon the crowd cheered or booed.

    Weeks 3 and 4

In Week 3, Craig, Derek and Roberto were banned from nominating after talking about the nomination procedure, breaking a key rule. Clips of their discussions (mainly concerning Saskia) were played into the house via the plasma screen in the living room. Derek, Roberto and Sam were announced as the nominees for eviction on Day 19. Sam was the least popular housemate out of the three, and was evicted to a mixed reception on Day 22.

Week 4 saw the first traditional set of nominations of the series when, for the first time, all of the housemates' nominations were taken into account, and there was no twist to the format. Derek and Roberto received the most nominations from their fellow housemates, and Roberto was evicted on Day 29.

    Weeks 5 and 6

On Day 30, less than 24 hours after Kinga, Eugene and Orlaith had entered the Secret Garden, a red button appeared in the main house, with a sign saying "Do not press this button" above it, and the words "Press here" around it. After much discussion amongst the housemates, Makosi pressed the button and was immediately called to the Diary Room. She entered the Secret Garden, met Kinga, Eugene and Orlaith, and was instructed to help them by stealing food and other supplies from the main house. If she failed to do so or was discovered by her fellow housemates, she would be automatically put up for the public vote.

Makosi was successful once more. She managed to sneak out food to the secret housemates, and also getting them into the house to shower without being caught. However, while Maxwell was awaiting a delivery of ten cans of cider, Makosi took it upon herself to go into the diary room to collect the items. After being given the cider, Makosi whipped up an idea to "create drama" and give the cans to the secret housemates. An hour later, Makosi pretended to be drunk and the result was a fierce argument between Saskia and Makosi. After the argument, it was now clear a divide was in the house. The incident has since been named "Cidergate" and caused as much of a rift between viewers as it did between housemates.

Before completing the task, Makosi had to evict one housemate from the secret garden – she chose Kinga who later returned to the Big Brother house on Day 66 to replace Orlaith who walked a day earlier.

In Week 5, for the third time, nominations had been discussed, this time between Maxwell and Anthony, so they were banned from nominating. Maxwell and Saskia, the "love birds", were put up for the public vote. As new housemates, Orlaith and Eugene were exempt. Saskia was evicted to a mixed reception on Day 36.

In Week 6, Maxwell was evicted, having received 57 per cent of the public vote, much to the surprise of the other housemates. Both Maxwell and Science were booed by the crowd when Davina announced their names before the result of the public vote. Maxwell was evicted to a mixed reception on Day 43.

    Weeks 7 and 8

In Week 7 Big Brother played mind games with the housemates, informing them that during the week Big Brother would lie twice. Big Brother then told housemates that nominations that week were optional. This was Big Brother's first lie. All nominations are compulsory, so the housemates who did not nominate were put to the public vote as punishment. When the results of the nominations were announced Big Brother stated that Anthony, Craig and Kemal were up for eviction. This was Big Brother's second lie. In fact, these three were the only housemates to nominate, so it was everyone else who was subject to the public vote. As an extra twist, the housemates had to pick whom to evict out of the two people with the most votes. These turned out to be Makosi and Vanessa, with Makosi receiving the largest percentage of votes. All of the housemates with the exception of Kemal chose Vanessa to be the 7th person to leave, so on Day 50, a tearful Vanessa was evicted from the house.

In Week 8 nominations were made without any twists to the format. Science and Orlaith were the two housemates up for eviction with five and four votes respectively. Anthony and Eugene were the only housemates not to receive any votes this week. On Day 57, Science became the 8th housemate to be evicted from the Big Brother house. Science had a mixed reception by the public when his name had been called by Davina.

    Weeks 9 and 10

For Week 9 the housemates were given a secret agent task to complete. Amusingly, Kemal, who had been convinced of there being a mole in the house ended up randomly being selected to be a double agent for this task. The housemates failed to realise this, so passed the task. Derek, whom they thought was the Double Agent, was sent into hiding overnight. Nominations were slightly altered this week; instead of housemates nominating who they wanted to put up for eviction they were nominating for those they wanted to save from the vote. Kemal and Orlaith gained just one vote each and so faced the public vote. Kemal received 51.1% of the public vote and so became the ninth evictee.

The next morning, on Day 65, Orlaith carried out her promise to leave the house voluntarily if not evicted by the public. She became the third contestant in UK Big Brother series to leave of their own accord. Less than a day after her departure, it was announced that a new housemate would be sent in to replace her. On Day 66, Kinga entered the house as Orlaith's replacement. As she was sent in, she was told that if she got at least one person to not nominate her this week, she will be immune from eviction and definitely be in the house for the final week and will be eligible to win. She managed to pass the task easily, receiving no nominations at all. The housemates up for eviction were Derek and Eugene, meaning Anthony, Craig, Kinga and Makosi were in the final week. On Day 71, Derek was evicted with 58% of the vote, becoming the 11th person to leave the house, and leaving Eugene in the final week as well. He was the last housemate to be voted out on nomination results.

    Week 11

On Day 76, during dinner, Craig was evicted in a surprise mid-week eviction, for being the housemate to have received the least votes (only 4.1%) from the public to win Big Brother on Wednesday evening.

About one hour after Craig was evicted, Big Brother called a housemate to the Diary Room and Eugene was first to respond. He sat down behind a suitcase containing £50,000 in cash - half the actual winner's prize money. Big Brother told him he had the option of winning this half of the prize, leaving the other half for the winner. Big Brother told the remaining housemates that if he turned down the money, the prize money would double to £200,000. Eugene was given one minute to make to his decision while he was watched on screen by the rest of the housemates. After about 50 seconds, Eugene had made his decision and chose to take the £50,000. He later felt very guilty but his housemates assured him that he had done the right thing, and they would've done it too.

On Day 78, the final, Kinga received the least number of public votes (3.8% of the four-way total) and came in 4th place. The audience gave her a mixed reception. Makosi came third with 8.7% of the three-way vote. Her interview with Davina was poorly received, with the audience booing and shouting "liar" almost all the way through. As the interview neared its end, chants of "off, off, off," were yelled by the crowd. Eugene was next to leave, coming second with 42.7% of the final two-way vote. Upon leaving the house, Eugene's reception was extremely positive. With 57.3% of the two-way vote, Anthony was the winner of Big Brother 2005. He left the house elated at his own success - gyrating on the platform to the press.

The final drew a peak audience of 7.8 million viewers. The average audience for the final however was the lowest of all 6 Big Brother UK series.

    Series 7

Big Brother series 7, broadcast in the United Kingdom (at Elstree Studios) in 2006, is the seventh season of the popular Big Brother reality television series. Shown on Channel 4 from May 18, 2006 to August 18, 2006, it is the longest series yet at thirteen weeks long. The series has been criticised by many different organisations for the introduction of a man with Tourette syndrome to the house and forbidding, for a short period, contestants to speak in Welsh. On the opening night, the programme obtained a peak audience of 8.1 million viewers, one million greater than the previous year's show.

The show's format is unchanged from previous years. A number of contestants (known as "housemates") live in a purpose-built house, totally isolated from the rest of the world. Each week, one is evicted from the house, by way of a public vote. The final housemate to leave wins the grand prize of £100,000.

Companion shows Big Brother's Big Mouth and Big Brother's Little Brother are retained this series, with the addition of Big Brother's Big Brain (a psychology show), hosted by Dermot O'Leary. Live action (with a 15-minute delay) is available by pressing the red button on E4. On Freeview this will be removed in mid-July and replaced with FilmFour.

    Housemates

Of the seventeen housemates introduced into the house, fourteen entered on the launch night. This is greater than previous years. Due to the departures of Shahbaz and Dawn, two new housemates — Sam and Aisleyne — were introduced as part of the Meal or No Meal task.

Following the departure of George, there is some speculation about the possibility of another new housemate. It was rumoured that another contestant would be sent in with the Golden Ticket winner on Day 23 but this did not happen

This series overall has seen the largest number of housemates to leave without eviction, with three so far, beating the third series, where two housemates walked out and the fifth series, in which two were ejected.

    Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace

Aisleyne (born December 1978) is a 27-year-old model and promotions girl from London, who entered on Day 12 as a prize won during the Meal or No Meal task in week 2. She sparked bitching among Imogen, Grace, and Sezer who vowed to give her a hard time in the house. Grace has since called her a "ghetto hoe" and a "wigger", claiming that Aisleyne wants to be black. Aisleyne also upset Mikey when she said she didn't miss Sezer after his eviction. On Big Brother's Big Brain, it was mentioned that Aisleyne was the most manipulative on the machiavellian test.

    Bonnie Holt

Bonnie Holt (born February 1986), the first housemate to enter, is a 20-year-old care worker from Loughborough, working with sufferers of Down's syndrome. With a brother, Clyde, and sister, Lara, she is known for her strong Loughborough accent.[4] The first evictee, she was evicted on Day 9 with 78% of the vote.

During the week after her eviction, Big Brother's Little Brother had a "Bonnie's View on Everyfin and Everyfin" section, the title being based on Bonnie's rap in her audition tape. In this section, Bonnie tells the viewers her opinions on various institutions and events; including one section on the Monarchy where she wholeheartedly gave her support of "monks and that".

Dawn is a 38-year-old exercise scientist from Birmingham, who thinks people are "****". She claims to be the great great granddaughter of poet William Blake[citation needed], though William Blake had no children. In her audition for the show Dawn claimed that she thinks Gandhi, Bob Geldof and Mother Theresa are nice people and everyone else is a bastard. Similar to almost all the housemates, her personality in the house seems to differ greatly from her personality in her audition tape. On entry to the house, she claimed that if she were to be reincarnated, she would want to come back as either Jesus or Adolf Hitler.

Dawn was ejected from the house after a coded communication with the outside world, thereby breaking one of the fundamental rules of Big Brother. Dawn had asked to leave the Big Brother house after receiving the message; when producers were reluctant to let her leave, she told Big Brother about this rule-breaking, thus forcing them to remove her. When called to the diary room to be informed of her ejection, she consistently talked over Big Brother in order to emphasise that in her view she was not removed, but left voluntarily, which made sense given that she had received her coded message to leave the house. During her time in the house Dawn was subject to accusations by fellow housemate Nikki of causing a BO epidemic in the house's towels and clothes; however, Dawn did not find out about this during her stay in the house. When she was ejected from the house she said "Oh, shut up!" 37 times. An extended version of the conversation, shown later, revealed that she had calmly asked to leave voluntarily before this tirade.

    George Askew

George is a 19-year-old student from London, whose friends include Princess Beatrice of York and Sam Sangster (son of the race-horse owner). A former student at Ludgrove School (he was there at the same time as Prince William and Prince Harry), he went onto the prestigious Harrow School. George is the son of a former private secretary to the Prince of Wales. He is a great-grandson of the 4th Earl of Ellesmere (through his paternal grandmother, Lady Susan Askew) and his great-uncle was the 6th Duke of Sutherland. One of his father's cousins married into the Bowes-Lyon family, Earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and so it has been claimed he is linked to Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. [6]

On Day 13, George left the Big Brother house. He had told Grace his intentions earlier and she could not persuade him to stay. Before leaving he told Big Brother in the Diary Room: "My reason for leaving the Big Brother house is the thought of fame and how I would like to continue my private life - and fame is too much for me." [7] Since his exit, there has as yet been no official replacement for George, if it is to be believed that Sam and Aisleyne were replacements for Dawn and Shahbaz.

    Glyn Wise

Glyn (born 9 January 1988) is an 18-year-old and the self-proclaimed "Sexiest Lifeguard in North Wales" and nudist from Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd. He entered the house in his lifeguard attire complete with buoyancy aid. His first language is Welsh and told Big Brother in the Diary Room that being in the house is improving his English. Despite the apparently relatively high regard with which Glyn seems to hold himself and his physical appearance, he has only achieved a little success with the opposite sex by receiving a lap dance and snog from 35-year-old Lea. He is the most intelligent housemate according to an intelligence test which all the housemates sat. Other tests revealed him to be the happiest and most perceptive housemate.

    Grace Adams-Short

Grace (born August 1985) is a 20-year-old dance teacher from Plymouth but now living in London. A self-confessed Sloane Ranger. Grace has been getting close to both Mikey and George in particular, and it was disputed both in and outside of the house as to which one she will "pair up" with, until George left. While in the house, she stated that she would not model for Nuts or Zoo but would for something like FHM. She also claimed she would not pose topless due to her job. Her time in the house heralded a number of exposes on her life, including claims that she was a childhood bully, and a failed pop star [9].
Grace cried after hearing repeated chants of "Get Grace Out" from the eviction night crowd on Day 23. Some have suggested that Big Brother planted this group of people here on purpose, to cause upset. Although Grace is not particularly liked outside the house, she gets along with some of the housemates. She has been touted at the most hated housemate ever, even more so than Sezer, who gained a record 91.6% of votes. Bookmakers are offering odds of 1/50 on her being evicted and odds of 100/1 on her receiving 100% of votes.
    [edit]

    Imogen Thomas

Imogen (born November 22, 1982) is a 23-year-old bar hostess and former beauty queen from Llanelli, South Wales. She was Miss Wales in 2003. Imogen claims to have had sexual relations with Manchester United footballer Cristiano Ronaldo and former Manchester United footballer Dwight Yorke, with whom she reportedly finished the relationship because "he was no longer famous enough". Whilst he was in the house, Imogen spent most of her time with Sezer, and although the two shared several kisses, she never shared a bed.

After the fourth week, she had still not nominated once. There were no nominations in the first week. In the second and third weeks, she was banned from nominating after discussing nomination tactics, breaching one of the fundamental rules of Big Brother. She was also not allowed to nominate in the fourth week because only the Golden Housemate (Suzie) was allowed to that week.

    Lea Walker

Lea is a single mother and model from Nottingham aged between 35 and 40 (during the show she has variously stated her age as 35, 36 or 40) who has spent a reported £35,000 on plastic surgery, raising funds by selling her house, and claims she now has the largest breast implants in the UK, wearing a UK bra size of 30M. Lea has also appeared in the TV series Plastic Surgery Ruined my Wife, where her boyfriend, Tigertailz bass player Gregg Russell complained she was now receiving too much attention[citation needed]. She revealed to the housemates that she has taken part in two pornographic films.

She gave Glyn a lap dance on day 8 which he visibly enjoyed, and even snogged him during a game of spin the bottle later in the show which caused shock for the housemates, and has formed a great bond with fellow housemate Richard, who give her the affectionate nickname "Dolly", however this relationship has broken down somewhat due to the continued back-stabbing and misinformation being spread amongst the housemates. She has, furthermore, formed a close mother-like relationship with Pete, outraging Lisa.

    Lisa Huo

Lisa (born January 4, 1979) is a Chinese 27-year-old upholsterer from Ashton-under-Lyne. She speaks fluent Shanghainese [1], and lived in Shanghai, China until she was two. She initially developed a good relationship with the majority of the housemates due to her outgoing nature, particularly with Pete. However, she did offend Bonnie and Sezer when she claimed she didn't like them in the diary room, which was broadcast to the other housemates. As week 3 progressed, Lisa's friendship with Pete began to deteriorate, as he made it clear he only liked her as a friend and she appeared to take pleasure in torturing and killing insects, something that upset Pete greatly and led to an angry confrontation. She also later became offended when Pete failed to list her as a reference on his CV. Pete nominated Lisa for eviction in the third week's nominations.

She has become well known for her heavy Manchester accent and frequent use of the words "alright", "mint" and, in particular "****". She has admitted to fancying Pete (with whom she platonically shared a double bed until Pete decided to move to one of the newly vacant single beds in the evening of Day 20). She also declared that she never cries, but has shed tears on more than one occassion in the house. In light of her 'rejection' by Pete, Lisa has seemingly changed camps, spending less time with her original friends and more time with Grace, Imogen and Mikey. On Day 26 she won the Waiting Task and was immunised from eviction for that week.

    Mikey Dalton

Mikey (born 1983) is a 23-year-old half-Iranian Liverpudlian software developer and model whose activities in the house have been so far been dominated by flirtatious activity with both Imogen and Grace. His video package at the start saw him claim that he dislikes feminists and believes that women and men are not equal, which bought him a negative reaction from the crowd. Despite these claims, this side of his personality has not been seen in the house and Mikey has been a fairly reserved housemate.

    Nikki Grahame

Nikki (born April 1982) is a 24-year-old model and dancer whose ambition is to marry a Premiership footballer.

Nikki has been known to become emotional at the slightest provocation, though this became more severe as the second week began. Her grievances ranged from a lack of male attention, to the cramped nature of the house, to missing her friends and family, to not being provided with her £16 make-up remover or her clothes. On the first night in the house, Nikki was upset because Big Brother refused to provide her with bottled water and she declined to drink the twice-filtered tap water (although this could be attributed to the fact that Nikki struggled with anorexia from an early age). Nikki also demonstrated a distinct lack of aptitude in cooking food (she allowed a wok containing only olive oil to burn) while criticising a meal prepared for the house by Grace.

It is largely for these reasons that Nikki commands little respect among most of her other housemates. Some members that have not criticised her directly about her naïvety have readily done so in secret. She survived eviction in Week 3 by a narrow margin, but this was most likely due to her running against the less popular Sam (Nikki received 46.3% of the vote, making it a narrow 'win' at best).

Nikki has appeared as an extra in an episode of EastEnders

    Pete Bennett

Pete (born 1982), second housemate to enter, is a 24-year-old rock and roll singer from Brighton, who has Tourette syndrome. His band, Daddy Fantastic, claim to be influenced by Jimi Hendrix and Scooby Doo. According to a report in the Sunday Mirror, Pete's most prized possession is a teddy bear given to him as a birthday present by Robert Smith, lead singer of The Cure, who is a friend of Pete's mother Anne.

There is ambiguity over Pete's surname. Some claim that it's "Bennett"and some that it's Stephenson. His name is Bennett but his mother is Mrs Stephenson, having remarried . During a conversation with Aisleyne, he said that he too had a double-barrelled name, which explains the discrepancies.

In a pool-side conversation on Day 22, after a curious Richard questioned Pete regarding his heavy London accent, Pete revealed that he had grown up in London and moved to Brighton "about five years ago". (When Richard asked why, Pete replied "Coz it's wicked!")

The bookies have placed Pete as the favourite to win since the beginning of the series. The housemates themselves also agree that he is the most likely to win.

    Richard Newman

Richard (born 1972) is a 33-year-old gay Canadian, and self-styled "sexual terrorist". He has taken on the role of the "father figure" in the house according to former fellow housemate George. He is also something of an "agony uncle" and is always giving advice to other housemates. He even taught Glyn how to wash his clothes. Richard says that he has a preference for 'big, dumb men' and his ideal weekend away would be spent in prison.

According to the shouting test, he is the loudest housemate. He once referred to Imogen as "dull, boring and plastic". Although he has tried to portray himself as caring for the other housemates, he led the group in sending Shahbaz to Coventry.

    Sam Brodie

Born as a male in 1987, Sam is a 19-year-old half-Indonesian half-Scottish cross-dresser from Irvine, North Ayrshire, Scotland, and is an unemployed nail technician. Sam entered on Day 12 as a prize for Meal or No Meal. Although not having had a sex-change operation, Davina revealed on the live programming that Sam prefers to be referred to as a female. Sam revealed to the housemates to being biologically male on the same night as entering the house, and said they could act however they wish. Imogen took a liking to the new housemate, informing Sezer he should refer to Sam as a "she" as wanted. Sam appeared to have insomnia and became known for repeatedly telling all the housemates that they are "amazing". Sam speaks fluent Malay, Indonesian and French.

Sam caused some problems in the house as the other housemates felt Sam was "too nice". Sam also caused controversy among housemates by entering or staying inside the bathroom whilst others used the toilet. On day 23, Sam lost out to Nikki and became the third housemate to be evicted from BB7, with 53.7% of the vote.

    Sezer Yurtseven

Sezer is a 26-year-old Turkish-Cypriot, claiming to be a stock broker and property developer from London. Sezer previously played cricket for Kent up to under-19 level. He is a former boxer, competing in white collar boxing [20], [21] and he claims he is the youngest person to have been on the London Stock Exchange floor at the age of 18 (which is odd given that the floor closed in 1986 when he was just six).

However, it turns out Sezer is not a complete fantasist. He is registered with the Financial Services Authority as having worked in commodities and foreign exchange trading at three different firms: a brokerage called ADM between 2001 and 2002, then as an independent trader at London Capital Group until 2004, and at a trading arcade called Schneider Trading Associates up to February 2006. Sezer is also a director of three companies, including the eponymous Cezer Trading and Seven International Property (both dormant having never traded). Given his self-declared wealth, it is seen as odd that the 26-year-old Sezer still lives at home with his mother. [22]. The Sun revealed that Sezer had been arrested for an alleged date rape in 2004 but the charge was dropped due to lack of evidence. [23]

Sezer was evicted on day 16 with a record 91.6% of the vote. It is believed that Sezer was evicted because he told fellow housemates that the girls watching would vote to keep him in. He even told Imogen that if they were both up for eviction, he would win because more girls vote than boys. It was this perceived smugness and vanity, and his confiding to housemates that he intended to "bully" at least one other housemate, that probably led to Sezer's downfall. He was self-assured right up to the moment his name was announced, at which point his mouth literally fell open. He walked out to boos and jeering.

In the week after eviction, Sezer tried to prove he was a nice guy afterall, by doing nice acts such as dating Vanessa Feltz and visiting an old people's home on Big Brother's Little Brother.

    Shahbaz Chauhdry

Shahbaz (born March 1969) is a gay 37-year-old Glaswegian. He styles himself as "the paki poof" or a "wacky paki", a phrase that caused offence with at least one housemate. Shahbaz writes poetry in his spare time and longs to get it published one day. He also knits and despite classifying himself as unemployable, according to the Daily Star he once worked as an entertainer in a detention centre for illegal immigrants[citation needed]. He lived on £75 a week before entering the house.

Shahbaz was criticised by some housemates for what they regard as childish behaviour including throwing most of the food in the house in the bin. It was generally accepted that he did not adapt well to life in the house. Through his acting-out behaviour and "theatrical" monologues Shahbaz was cast aside by his fellow housemates, except Pete, Glyn and George. Shahbaz was being monitored by production team psychologists following comments that he intended to commit suicide whilst in the house [24] and he asked to leave the Big Brother house, departing on Day 6. On this final day in the house he was subjected to bullying and ostracisation by other housemates, which included them locking him outside in the garden, mocking him, stealing his clothes while he was swimming, insulting him, throwing his breakfast in the bin and then shouting at him for wasting food, and pointedly leaving the sitting room upon his entrance. All housemates present left the living room except George, who stayed in the room claiming that he was his "own man".

After leaving the house, it had become clear that Shahbaz understated his mental condition to psychologists, therefore cheating the selection process [25]. On BBLB Shahbaz said that during his stay his inner demons had come back "to bite him on the arse", but overall his view was that having been in the BB House was positive for him, and he claimed his behaviour was "Car crash television at it's finest" to which the presenter stated "Actually, it was rather disturbing". On BBBM the following day (26 May) he told Russell Brand that he had asked to be allowed to re-enter the BB House.

    Susie Verrico

Susie is a 43-year-old model from Kent who entered the house with a Golden Ticket. Her husband had bought sixty boxes of Kit Kats, but they still didn't find one. He later paid £4000 for one. Susie also auditioned for the show, as well as Big Brother 3, 5 and 6 (series 5 of which she was a reserve housemate that was not entered). Because of this, several housemates recognised her from auditions and the press carried suggestions that the lottery which ended up with her entering the house was rigged.

As the Golden Housemate, Susie must abide by the Golden Rules:

    1. Susie is forbidden to discuss the outside world with the other housemates.
    2. Susie has her own Golden Quarters, including a Golden Bedroom, Golden Toilet and Golden Shower.
    3. Susie must wear gold at all times.
    4. Susie was the only housemate to nominate in week 4.

The other housemates knew this before the nominations, but were forbidden from telling Susie. The two housemates she chose (Nikki and Grace) therefore automatically face eviction. Any housemate that revealed this to Susie would also have faced eviction.

Chronology of season 7 so far

    Weeks 1 and 2

During week one, "The Big Brotherhood" task was introduced, in which some housemates were elected to "The Big Brotherhood" and hence received their suitcases and were immune from eviction that week.[26] Lisa and Shahbaz, as leaders of "The Big Brotherhood", chose the housemates who would enter this group, until just three were left (Dawn, Glyn and Bonnie). These then faced the public vote and Bonnie was evicted on Day 9.[27]

On Day 5, Shahbaz hid the housemates' food in the garden. After it was uncovered, Shahbaz admitted to the act and, increasingly ostracised and bullied, left the show voluntarily on Day 6.[28]

On Day 7, Dawn asked to leave the Big Brother house after receiving a message from her family that her sister was ill. Dawn admitted to the other housemates that this was code that "things [ie press coverage] were getting too heavy". As a result, Dawn was ejected from the house by Big Brother for rulebreaking the following day.[29]

The second task introduced to the housemates was that of "Meal or No Meal" (a pun of Endemol's other television series, Deal or No Deal). The task entailed the housemates answering various questions, in order to win a luxury food budget. At the climax of the task (on Day 12), Pete was asked questions answered wrongly in previous rounds. Getting three out of four right, Pete won the house two new housemates, Sam and Aisleyne.[30] Some of the original housemates adapted badly to the new arrivals, criticising them nearly immediately. Sezer was the main instigator and vowed to bully them.[31]

George left voluntarily on Day 13.[32] That same day, both Sezer and Imogen were banned from nominating due to their discussion of tactics the previous night. In this round of nominations, Richard, Lea and Sezer were revealed as facing the public vote.[33]

On day 16, Sezer became the second person to be evicted from the house with a record 91.6% of the vote.[34]

    Weeks 3 and 4

During week three, the housemates were set a "Temp Job" task, in which each housemate was given a job, ranging from Chef to Personal Assistant to Toilet Attendant to Lifeguard. Each fired housemate constitutes a "fail" and, as usual, four fails means that the house collectively fails the task. Nikki, Lea, Sam and Mikey were all fired, so the housemates had a reduced food buget as punishment.[35] To celebrate the end of the task, the housemates were presented with an office party, where an alcohol-induced game of spin the bottle took place.[36]

On day 23, Sam became the third housemate to be evicted from the house. Also, Susie became the Golden Ticket winner and thus the Golden Housemate after Aisleyne randomly picked a bingo ball out of a bingo-style machine. During this time, as housemates were in the garden and BB was speaking through the intercom, the crowd outside the compound could be heard saying "Get Grace out!". The intercoms would usually have blocked the noise out with pre-recorded audience banter. Susie must wear gold at all times and she will be the only housemate to nominate in week 4, but she will not be informed of this until the time comes.

On Day 24 Susie chose four other housemates to have a special dinner with her in the Big Brother garden. They were Glyn, Lea, Richard and Aisleyne.

As Susie was elected the Golden Housemate, she chose to nominate Nikki and Grace. Both will definitely face the public vote and one will be evicted on Day 30. Lisa earlier won immunity from this weeks nomination by standing for 10 hours on a podium. This was a challenge set by Big Brother. Lisa and Grace were the last housemates to finish the task and decided to pick straws in order to decide who would be immune, rather than continue to particpate in the challenge. After their nomination both Nikki and Grace were visibly annoyed and began a secret campaign of invective towards Susie, ultimately stealing and drinking the champagne Susie had been given as a prize.

For the first time in Big Brother's history one hundred Willy Wonka-style Golden Tickets were hidden beneath the wrappers of Kit Kat chocolate bars for members of the public to find. Successful claimants were invited to the Big Brother studios to participate in the programme on June 9, 2006. During this programme, one claimant was selected to become a housemate by an exisiting housemate choosing a random lottery ball with a corresponding number on it. The selected claimant became, with immediate effect, a Big Brother housemate, entered the house and was subject to Big Brother's rules. The chocolate bars went on sale on May 19, 2006. As of 10:20 PM, Friday June 02, no more tickets could be registered and Davina made the announcement live on TV.

According to reports, eBay allowed the sale of Golden Tickets through pre-Approved auctions.[37] They were not allowed to be sold in the general auction, as one ticket was put on sale for a bogus £10.1 million before it was removed. There have been many other similar false sales. Genuine tickets were being sold on eBay's United Kingdom website.

58 golden tickets were claimed before the deadline, but a number of people dropped out and after background checks were carried out, 34 golden ticket holders appeared on the programme, and one, Susie Verrico, entered the house on 9 June.[38] However, the Saturday 10 June issue of British tabloid newspaper 'The Sun' reported the fears of many viewers about this 'random' draw with the headline 'Rig Brother', noting the fact that she was immediately recognised by at least four of the housemates from attending previous auditions to get on the show, with producers admitting that she had also auditioned for series three, five and six and been a standby for series five. In fact, according to the newspapers, many of this years contestants had met each other in previous auditions for the show, prompting fears that C4 is grooming people for the show years in advance, and that the housemate selection process is flawed. On Tuesday 13 June, The Sun reported that Ofcom is now investigating.

    Criticism of Season 7

More than years previously, Big Brother has been criticised in the media for both its choice of housemates and its practice once the housemates are inside. Initially the programme faced accusations of exploiting a man with Tourette syndrome, by accepting him as a housemate.[40] The Tourette Syndrome Association of the U.K. claimed that this year's contestant, Pete Bennett, could suffer in the house, and also stated that parents were concerned that their children could be subjected to bullying as a consequence of Pete's behaviour inside the house. Channel 4 said Pete's inclusion could educate people about the syndrome.[41] And Pete's mum said "I'm angry when people say Pete shouldn't be on the show - that it is in someway exploitative. It's ridiculous. Do we want people with Tourette's to be accepted or marginalised?"

Further criticism arose when contestant Glyn Wise was reprimanded for communicating in his first language, Welsh, to housemate Imogen Thomas. Big Brother deemed this a form of 'code' and issued a warning to Glyn, who retorted "But Welsh is British". Following the incident, the Welsh Language Society complained to Channel 4, Ofcom and S4C, asking "are we moving towards a state where 'big brother' is watching over us and deciding what language we can and cannot speak?" [43]

The programme attracted more criticism on May 31 for putting "vulnerable" people in the Big Brother house. Shahbaz was revealed to be mentally and emotionally unstable and threatened to commit suicide on live television; Lea suffers from Body dysmorphic disorder and has previously attempted suicide; 19-year-old Sam has admitted to being ostracized by family members because of homosexuality, and possible gender identity disorder; and Nikki has suffered from anorexia and been sectioned in the past due to the condition. A spokeswoman for mental health charity SANE claimed that producers are "playing fast and loose with people's lives." A spokesperson for Rethink commented "The programme should not profit from people having a breakdown." A spokesman defended the show saying that a psychologist is always available for housemates

Well done! Good to read it all again.
    Grace Adams-Short
She also claimed she would not pose topless due to her job.

:D First off... she wont have a job becuase of her behaviour. I doubt the parents would be happy with her teaching young ones after all the bitching and backstabbing

Second.... there's not much call for topless flat shots :D

Edit: Ooops .. forgot to add a favourite.
It would have been BB1 and BB2

My fave is definatley this year!

Loving the craziness of it all. And the pure paranoia of some people thinking its a fix, when its not!

I loved the Brian Dowling Big Brother, mainly because of the innocence of the contestants.
They were, for the most part, good guys, and the comedy was fairly pure.
I loved the Jade Goody Big Brother too, although I will confess to wanting to hurl the TV across the room every time Ms Goody opened her big gob. However, overall, the characters where quite stong and entertaining and it defitinitely made for big brother.
My most recent favourite would have to be the Nadia big brother. I was totally hooked form dday one, and I actually stayed up some nights watching the live feeds.
I know, I am incredibly sad.

I went with the first one, it was the one true big brother. Every series since, the contestants know how it is viewed and some are complete carticatures of people.

    That said I still enjoy.

I was abroad for the second and didnt watch the fourth with Cameron, it looked dull.

I'm enjoying this years too, but I kinda feel its walking around with a load of band-aids on, keeping it together. What with Shabaz and Grace walking early and weak contestants like Mikey and George.

BB7 is no where near a classic (so far). As SprostonGreen said, it does seel like its got loads of band-aids sticking it together. The group hasn't really gelled, the personalities in there are (for the most part) pretty awful. It's lacking a certain spark.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭Bamboozled

Bandaids sticking it together. Good call. I tend to agree with it.

I think 7 is missing the central figure. The one that flits between groups and is either laughed at by everyone because is a funny figure, or is just a likeable figure.

Stuart flitted between groups in 5. he was liked by all.
Science anoyed them all in 6 though he was liked by some. so they were united in their annoyance
No one to go between groups and keep tem all relatively together though apart.

I have to say, I didn't really watch the first two series, but since then we've had some good series, by fave was BB5. it was controversy written all over it. It also had the best HMs and the evil twist was very entertaining.

I felt that BB3 was my second best. BB4 was very good, if you didn't join the crowd and diss it.

BB6 was another good series, but definitely not the best. The HMs were rather dislikable and nothing great happened during this series about from Makosi's "Preganancy".

So far, BB7 has been excellent. The first week was one of BB's best opening weeks, but so far there have been very entertaining moments, but I feel it could go downhill as there is far too much bitchiness happening. Once Grace goes, I'd say the series will probably change for the better, but then again I have to say with 9 weeks left there should be loads of entertainment left!

I went with Series 5 with last year been a close second. I think people will lose their jobs over the housemates picked this year, some terrible choices from the tens of thousands of options they had.

i loved BB3 with Kate and Johnny - I thought they were great fun to watch. My fave bit was when kate was so pissed that se fell over trying to get her trousers on!

After a bit of a think I went with BB5. Best characters and incidents overall imho.

So we're roughly just past the half way mark. How is this year now comparing to previous ones? Unless something major happens in the next few weeks I think it'll go down as the 2nd worst of the series.

No way is BB7 my favorite. The sound dips in the live feed are a joke and there is far too much bias in the highlights shows.

The characters, the only ones I like are Aisleyne and Pete, maybe jennie, but I don't see much of her. and neither are legendary. I think the likes of Mikey Susie and Imogen and glyn are dullards, and I detest. those being Nikki Richard, Michael and Jayne.

BB6 was horrendous, most of the characters were far from likable.

BB5 was pretty much the same, and the amount of cheating that went on was unnatural.

    BB4 was a snorefest.

BB3 was somewhat interesting, at least you could like the characters in it. not to mention yer man Sam doing a runner over the roof of the house.

BB1 and 2 i didn't really watch, only bits of BB1 and it didn't really interest me.

Anyway my favorite would have to be BB3.

The first 3 were the best, and if I had to choose one I'd go with the second series. Brian Dowling was just brilliant - that show would've failed without him.

The third series was brilliant too, so much drinking - and who can forget Jade Goody complaining about how everyone could see her "kebab" when she had lost at strip poker and was butt naked on the couch. That image is burned on my mind til I die.
