These days I consider anything more than five pints in a night to be heavy drinking.

I spent a six-week period about eight years ago, getting very drunk. I would start with four pints and move to double-vodkas, of which I would have about 10-14. I did this four nights a week for six weeks. I only stopped when I woke up one morning and couldn't feel anything down the left-hand side of my body. The numbness lasted for seven hours. That scared me and made me cop on. These days I have three (max) anytime I'm out (about once every two weeks!).

i think most people go through a phase like that.
mine was 4 years ago. same deal, only without the spirits (except the ocasional southern comfort and red).
i just look back at it as a right of passage. drink until you can drink no more and then start drinking sensibly.

these days i'll get drunk one night a week and then then following night i'll relax with a few cans. that's enough for me.

I'm starting to sound more and more like my Da every day, but I'm 36 now, and when in the late 80's to the mid 90's most people didn't stray over 5 drinks, even in the clubs.

I think the main reason was that we didn't have the money, full stop. Most of us didn't have drink-link cards back then, you'd know that you'd be going out with X punts, having Y drinks and paying Z for a shared taxi back.

These days all bets are off. But the more you drink the more your body will try and get used to it.

But I think we're in for a serious epidemic of diabetes and other problems in the future with the current crop of 18-30's.
