There's already a thread on this on the Radio forum. I think it's of general interest, though. Hope that's ok, mods. RTE has announced its new radio schedule for autumn.

Disgusted. No more Mystery Train or Rattlebag. Two of the best things on Radio 1. Why oh why do we have to pay a licence fee (on top of all the advertising they get) when we have no say in what's on offer?

The Mystery Train was the most contrived pile of shíte I've ever heard in my life. I think we can all do without John Kelly trying so very painfully hard to appear edgy, artistic and avant garde on our airwaves.

    19.00 - 20.00 - Drivetime Express with Dave Fanning

why do they think that drivetime is a clever name for a radio program?? rte suck eggs.

glad see Dave off 2fm and doing hopefully his own thing. 2fm makes me sick everytime I hear it

technically speaking you dont have to pay the radio license fee. freedom of information and all that jazz. thats why its not enforced for the radio me thinks! :o

Well if that's your opinion, cool. But a lot of people would disagree. I think the music John Kelly played was excellent. I don't think he tries to be any of the above. I think that's just his way.

Granted, but it's supposed to be a public service broadcaster, so why doesn't the public get to set the agenda?

Well we do actually. Shows that are pulled would be because they are not getting the listeners, which is joe public saying I don' like that show. Personally I'll miss the mystery train, some of stuff he's plays I don't like but a lot i do, I'm usually in the car listening, I'll miss it.

I didnt care for the mystrey train. could be my hatred of all things John Kelly.

Rattlebag, I will miss though, brilliant show! Learned about so many books and films and musicians through it! Miles was a legend.

Seams to be as just another dumming down of Irish Society in general.

I used to really like Rattlebag. You get to hear about latest music, books, plays etc. Sometimes you could get some real jems. Last year he interviewed Liam Clancy (Clancy brothers) talking about their time in 60's in the USA. Sex drugs & rock n roll, hanging with the Kennedys. Great Stuff.

So instead of this we get an extra 15 minutes of Joe Duffy, where some idiot gets to rant about the council or Berties Make up or Jordans tits or Pat Kenny wearing a fricking Munster jersey

Man, this country used to have a soul

When, exactly, did this country have soul????

This is deckchairs on the titanic stuff. What did John Creedon do to deserve this? Last year he was still doing 12 noon now its 12 midnight!!! Does this mean that I'll never hear Val Joyce whispering into a mike again? As for "Drivetime" please. How about Swingshift or something like that? I'm surprised there isnt a bleedin half hour of Eddie Hobbes and business news thrown into it. If RTE wanted to do anything decent they really should get an RTE 3 going, shove Gerry Ryan and Marty in there along with John Kelly, Myles Dungan and Ryan Turgidy.

It just goes to show, Ryan and Kenny are like a big septic blockage in the schedules. Pour some salt and Cilit Bang degreaser on them or everyone will be tuning into Newstalk, or Shaws as I call it - they're almost nationwide.

I think this new scedue is in repsonce to Newtalk getting a National licence. Thats why you seen so many current affars shows suddenly appearing on RTE Radio 1. I listen t newstalk in Dublin already and will keep with it. I gaveup on RTE along time ago. The same old people on that station for years Newstalk is far ahead of them.

And 2fm brought back Marty Whelan. Talk about taking a step back.

    Seriously.

For a "yoof" station, 2FM is closer to it's midlife crisis than it is to being youthful.
I have very little but contempt for the majority of output on 2FM...radio1 seemed to hit it's target audience pretty well I though...now they're scrapping any few bits of cultured stuff they had going in an attempt to play catch up with newstalk; typical RTÉ, copy something instead of trying a little innovation.

They need a major cull of everyone on 2FM as like BBC Radio 1 in the mid 90's where they kicked out all the 'Smashy and Nicey' type DJs.

I think Rattlebag was one of the few good things left on RTE Radio 1.

Bang-on! Though I think Kenny does a good job on radio.

gas thing is Newstalk practically copied RTE when they started, just listen to the output. when RTE is doing sport, Newstalk is doing sport and so on. thing is though Newstalk LEARNED what works for them and thats why theyre kicking RTEs arse. theres still a little too much of the semi state thing going on with RTE which is why the civil servant mentality of promoting people from seniority instead of ability is endemic in that organisation. in Newstalk if you dont get the numbers your out on your arse, theyve dramatically changed their presenters over the years not to mention the format for the entire station (im actually sad enough to remember the 20/20 news:D ). you'd never see this in a month of sundays from RTE.
My feeling on this? keep an eye out for your man who presented rattlebag. Newstalk have a weak link in their saturday arts show and i can see them scooping this guy up in a minute:D wait'll you see RTE may come to regret how its treated some of these presenters and their audience

If I was in a position to listen to radio all day my schedule would be:
Morning Ireland (RTE), Ray D'Arcy (Today), News at 1 (RTE), Sean Moncrief (sp?) (Newstalk), Matt Cooper (Today), Tom Dunne (Today), The Blast (Today), Donal Dineen (Today).

In the gaps between those show I wouldn't listen to anything. I'm sure some people would consider some of those shows trite, and some of them are a tad, but those that aren't RTE shows are certainly better than anything their stations are offering in the corresponding timeslot. While I'm sure some people have more discerning and specialist tastes, I'm sure I'm not completely atypical of the audience across the country in my age bracket.

regarding Val... Is there someone alive who talks more slowly

I reckon if ya got Fanning and Joyce to read a page of a book out loud ..Fanning would be finished the page before Joyce got past the second line.....Whats with Rachael English...is she joining a nunnery of what????

Mooney will do yer head in if he's on for 2 to three hours......

Someone stop him saying Duublew Duubblew Duubbelew:eek:

The two shows in question might not appeal to the masses but served a nice niche audience that is sick to the teeth of hearing the same 'plugged' tunes paid by the record companies to the radio station to play so you think you like it so much that you'll buy the album.

RTE Radio does need a re-vamp! But get rid of the self promoting I want my old TV show Gerry Ryan!

I don't listen to RTE Radio 1 much - I'm either in school, busy or else listening to some other radio station but Derek Mooney...6 days a week? His Saturday morning show "Mooney Goes Wild" is good enough I suppose, but people will get sick of him. I'm personally happy he's getting places in radio. I certainly wouldn't mind an afternoon gig with RTE Radio! :D

But Derek's alright in small doses. My worry is that people will get sick of him very soon. John Creedon back to midnight? Bless his good working soul :p

I hope there changes work out for them! :)

Has been said already but I can't believe they got rid of Mystery train and Rattlebag to give us more moaning from Joe Duffy.

    Me too!

Must be middle age creeping in or something but he's really grown on me in the last few years...

Do you think he was shifted to the middle of th night because of his recent so-called "Anti American" tilt...??? (I know, bet you didn't even notice it!)

Also his voice is much lower than the music and if you have the music at normal in the room you cannot hear what Val is saying. well past retirement age imho.

Val Joyce, where to begin? Tell you what, let's not.

    Ohmygod!!!

Anyone remember his little jingle (from a milliion years ago) ..."Irelands choice, with Val Joyce.."

Yeah, the liveline show has really become the pits over the last two years. Now they are extending it.

Similarly, whats happening to Sportscall, with Des Cahill? Is it being axed as fanning comes on at 7? Not that it would be missed as Cahill is hardly an impartial host "ah, you cant say that" being one of his favourite phrases. Last night some joe rang about Steve Staunton, made two interesting points:

    1. - John Delaney said we were getting a world class manager and we didnt.
    2. - How can the FAI justify charging ther same prices for friendly tickets as competative ones?

DC kept asking joe who would you play, who would you pick, what's wrong with the ones you've got? when joe admitted he couldnt pick a replacement in midfielf for o'shea dc scoffed at him, then said well we got bobby robson, isnt he world class, and got poor joe off. The point is if your view dosnt co-incide with either Des or Joe Duffy you can forget it, they'll ignore the reason why you're on in the first place, throw questions at you, till there's one you can answer, basicly say you're useless why are you ringing anyway and try to make a dick of you.

Both shows are poor mens James Whale, and that's saying something. Shove them off to RTE3, on long bloody wave, replace them with some talent or somehting interesting.
