There are certain parts of Ireland now where it is unpleasant to be around after a certain hour or even unpleasant to be around in general. A few months ago my bf and I were going out to a film in the local omniplex, a guy with his 10 year old kid jumps the queue and then starts cursing and threatening violence when we tell him to get back in the queue, the cinema staff were hopeless and neither of us have been back to that place since, I feel really sorry for the guys kid. I do go on girly nights out but getting home at night can be a scary experience (and we are talking about Grafton Street area). On the other had, if I go out in Naas I will not have problems. I think that there are unpleasant people everywhere, you just have to try and avoid them.

OP if you are having so much trouble with Irish people, have you ever thought that maybe your attitude is the problem?
There's often some assh*le who will ruin your night when you're out, and you do come across alot of scum in Dublin at a certain hour, but you can't base your assumptions about Irish people on drunken louts that most people on this forum have no time for anyway.
As regards smiling at the girl, if someone smiled at me in a friendly way I'd smile back, but you get so many creeps on nights out, so if someone was smiling at me in a sleezy way i might have the same reaction.

On the subject of fights, whats the deal with foreign people fighting in the streets in braod daylight? 3 times in the last two weeks I'v had to swerve due to people (men and women) swinging and knocking lumps out of each other. Once were africans, once pakistani/indian and once eastern european? None had any regard for the fact they were on main road and running right into traffic.
So was your problem the fighting or that they were blocking traffic.

alcohol doesnt make you a scumbag, being a scumbag makes you a scumbag
Ah, but the alcohol dis-inhibits the inner scumbag.

I hate fights. I cannot help but try to break them up. However, normally I don't see many fights, but I would get the "where are you from" bull**** from another situation.

I don't know where the accent problem comes from. I have a very neutral accent. But I'm "well spoken" and pronounce my words correctly. When someone asks where do I work, and I say "I run my own company" followwd by (where are you from) "I grew up in Blackrock", the abuse starts...

Yes, I grew up in a nice area, yes I am trying to make a good life for myself (running a company), but is that really a reason to give me awful abuse? Forerigners do not react this way. Only Irish people do.

Sorry but if you're Irish and lived in Ireland/Dublin for any sort of time I can't believe you would be so naive about Dublins night life. You need to get smart or you will get yourself into serious grief. Unless you want to die early stop breaking up fights. That a really stupid thing to be doing. Call the cops and leave it at that. Have you no sense?

Dublin is now a much bigger/busier city than it used to be. In my experience of cities all over the place not just Ireland, all big cities have scumbag element, especially at night. They all have that risk that if you are the wrong face in the wrong place, you will get into grief.

    Thats just life.

Tonight was a typical night for me.

I was in the Odeon, having a beer, minding my own business. Normally I would stay away from a bar like this. But anyway... I smile at a girl. She replies, "Is there a problem?" in a highly aggressive Irish accent. I walk away. Later on, I am talking to some German girls. My friend says "Sprechen sie Deutsch?". An Irish girl goes mental shouting at him for being racist and basically tries to start a fight. Yes, his joke was stupid. But did it deserve a reaction like this from a stranger?

When I left the Odeon, I witnessed a fight between some Irish people. I tried to break it up, but immediately some Irish girls started giving me abuse because of my "southside" accent. I'm used to this, so it was no major problem, but I still thought it was odd, considering I saved their boyfriends from broken noses.

Later in the night I was in Burger King. I was talking to a friend about business. As is usual for me, the Irish in front of me turned around and started asking where I was from and who I was. I replied (as is usual) along the lines of "I don't want any trouble, I'm just chatting". The guy wanted to "punch me if I don't move away". Again, another Irish person trying to ruin my night.

So I left Burger King and was walking home. Another fight. A girl claiming she will "get him knee capped in the morning". I tried to stop the fight (it was very serious) which resulted in more "where are you from/who do you think you are".

I am highly tolerant of weird/different people. But getting scummy reactions based on accents or because someone is trying to make something of their life - I just hate this.

I really really really want to like Irish people (females in particular) but they are such animals.

They hate anyone who does not conform to their small world view.

Is anyone else tired of this aggressive angry scummy Irish bull****?

PS Sorry if this post is a bit disjointed, but I'm a little drunk. I'm so tired of small minded, aggressive, anti-different, anti-middle-class, Irish bollox.
    PPS I'M IRISH.

I agree and recognise some of what you say but why you want to get involved in 2 fights that have nothing to do with you is beyond me,you can try doing that once in some countrys dude and you wont do it again!

    DOLEMAN R.I.P

    maybe you are a mouth!?

Like I'm not Irish in the slightest, except on St. Patrick's day when we all raise too many mugs to you guys and drink the great brew you make over there, and not the terrible c**p we make and drink in America. Being new to boards.ie I have a very different problem than the OP, in that everyone I've met has been really nice to me, even when I s***w up and say something stupid. Like I mean everyone from where ever they live in that super country of yours, which I have found is a lot more friendly than pseudo-superpower Bushyland.:)

    Fair point!
No matter what country you live in the citizens of that country will always see its faults, they sometimes choose to compare it to another country that doesnt have these faults and try to make us feel like untamed animals

As a friend of mine [not Irish in any sense but had spent some time there] observed "so much rage for such a little country."

I have to say I agree.

To the OP, why bother getting involved with other peoples problems? by stopping fights etc. you are asking for trouble, if it doesn't directly involve you then why bring the grief that it will no doubt bring?

i don't know about you but Ireland isn't the only country I've lived in but assholes are an international breed and as unfortunate as it is you met more in that night than you should have to endure!

Much lie the OP i am also drunk, but unlike the OP i was in burger king and had a great laugh with compleat strangers, i then walked from grafton street to south circular road and didn't see any fights, amazingly enough Harcourt street was violence free, does that mean due to my experience of tonight i should say !Ireland home of saints and scholers" far from it but don't tar us all with the one brush, thats as ignorant as the morans you had to face ast night!

    PS, Im a southsider too

In many other countries a lot more people carry knives and they are very keen on using them in any fracas.
