I don't know what to put for the Irish thing. I mean, technically I can say stuff in Irish, but saying "I can speak Irish" still feels like a lie.

Bond-007, someone from your house will have to enter your details for you.

I'll be out of the house that night so I've filled out a full section in advance. I want my non-gaelgoir, non-religious status recorded thank you very much.

That said, I still reckon a lot of the stats will be BS, most people claiming to be Catholic or fluent Irish speakers will be talking crap.

The woman called today and wasnt expecting somebody to be in. Why?
According to the CSO, our house is down as unoccupied. Now haw the hell did that happen. Our family has been in it since 1950 ffs.

The whole thing seems really badly organised tbh. I know some houses that have received nothing about the census yet. My parents got a form but there are more people living in the house than the form covers - any idea how they could get a second one? Also, I'll probably be moved into a new home by census night - it's a new building so what are the chances that we'll get a form?

    Does anyone know anything?

im putting down i speak irish, mainly because i do so frequently,

my religion will be jedi (i've seen more star wars movies than been to mass in the past couple of years)

and my race will be human after reading above.

how else can i stick it to the man?

What about a question asking if one's fluent in English? If only people who spoke and wrote perfect English counted what would the population of our great little state be?

seeing as the census questions are in english its kinda a moot point

Might want to hold off on the slagging:

 Try reading the form. If you're not in the house, you don't get counted in that house.

which considering they dont cover work places proves my point, if your a shift worker theres a good chance they wont get you

Everyone put down "Boardsism" for the religion. If you can convince 10,000 people to do it, it will become a new religion as far as I know.

    That or Jedi. Jedi's cool.

But some of the questions on that thing are really personal.. going into detail about marital status.. and the ethnic background:

    White:
    Irish
    Irish Traveller.

Or something along those lines. i didn't know there was a difference really ..

I knew when I opened this that some idiots were going to start shíting on about being Jedi.

thats to do with diseases. if your irish you have a higher susceptability of cystic fibrosis thanks to the proliferation of the gene that causes it in irish people (cause of the famine, the gene that causes CF helps prevent against typhus and diptheria which were rampant during that period. the advantage it gave them allowed them to survive but left us with a rate approximatily 50 times higher than the rest of europe:( )

if your just plain white then you dont have that gene on the same level of native irish and theres no need for medical facilities in your area for it. im not sure what the story is on irish traveller but i do no your average traveler's life expectancy is around 50 so theres probably something up there too.

it actually extends to other races. africans for instance suffer from sickle cell anemia (same story as us only their gene protects against maleria) so while this may sound like a racist question its actually one of the best examples as to how the census could work I.E if youve got 100 thousand africans living in an area it might be a good idea to have a clinic that can deal with sickle cell anemia ,just using the words "foreign national" wouldnt cover this :D

    ??? links?

The famine only lasted a few years - I doubt it had that much impact on the genepool tbh.

Also, what the hell is native Irish? No Norman blood? No English? ??? Who even knows about their ancestors in that level of detail?

I feel stupid. No-one told me there was a census on April the 23rd. Now you can call me stupid too.

If "The census is an account of everybody in the country on Census Night" (cso.ie), where do visitors get forms from, and what's their incentive to fill them in?

Why does Ireland hold a census on England's patron saint's day, anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 105 ✭✭Aziraphale

Ok, just read the sample form.

Why don't they have a question on sexuality? That would be a more interesting statistic than some of the stuff on there.

    That or Jedi. Jedi's cool.
Voluntary Sadomasochism. The Jedi do not enjoy the right to engage in extreme forms of sadomasochism, even if they genuinely volunteer to do so.

    Jedi religion.

still on the bright side when this census becomes public we can slag off all the gaelgoirs by pointing out how not only are there more people speaking mandarin than them but 100,000 people are now speaking polish too

    Serious question:

How many people do you think are fluent in Irish?

    Just curious...

Hard to tell. Really depends what you mean by fluent.

Couple of questions regarding Jedi religion:

    1) Despite the carrot being waved, I understand that even if "Jedi" recieves 99% it still won't be an 'official relgion' as it doesn't have any of the usual structures that come with a 'real' organised religion. However that fact aside will Jedi be listed as a seperate entity or just dumped in with "non-religious" etc when it comes to tallying the responses?

    2) Is there any fines/penalties/further paperwork for putting down something like "Jedi" in the religion section?

that might raise some issues with people who aren't "out" answering honestly on the form...

Is everyone going to answer the question about religion honestly? I think teenagers of religious parents will put that they're Catholic whether they care about that religion or not.

All be solved if everyone had individual forms...

    United Kingdom Census, 2001:
Those who entered "Jedi" as their Ethnicity and Religion (as percentage of all respondents) - 0.7%

390,000 out of approximately 52 million answered in such a way... That's pretty staggering tbh. The places where the "Jedi" response was highest?
Brighton, Oxford, and Cambridge... Damn meddling University students!

Anyway, to answer your question - no, there are no fines or penalties for answering in any way, let alone simply putting down Jedi, on the Census form.

No, I still haven't got the forms for my household. I'm astounded!! It is an offence not to fill the form in and it is only a week until census day.

There was a woman delivering leaflets about the census the other day - that is a complete waste of tax payers money - couldn't they have delivered the form at the same time??

It's not just "here's a form". They ask you a few questions and fill out some admin stuff. Guy who came to me yesterday had been at it for a few weeks. Their biggest problem is getting people in. After the census it may be up to three weeks before they collect them. As for those who want to play "silly buggers" with it, you are just embarrassing yourselves.

It's just a date TBH. There is a special form apparently for visitors, so if you are visiting or have visitors they are included in your household for that night.

All the more reason for them to get their act in gear!! They have known about this census for years!!!! Literally!! I have had nobody knock on my door, no forms, nothing! The census is supposed to be next Sunday. If anyone is playing "silly buggers" its the cso! There is no "lack of people" in this country! There are plenty of jobless people out there who I am sure would be delighted at the chance to be involved in the census!

It is lack of organisation ....
