Have you got your forms yet? Still no forms for my household.

Does anyone really believe that the census will make a big difference to our lives? Do you really think that the government will use the census to make real meaningful changes?

What do you think the government should be able to see from this census that needs immediate attention to make our lives better?

got the forms at the weekend and have them filled out already. I think they will make a small difference to local issues as local politicans can use them to indicate to government whats is needed in their locaility but that info will not be available for up to a year away until its all counted IMO

The form has arrived. A census is needed to find out the recources needed for this country, so we can someday build it up and annex Europe and recreate the Fatherland.

Are you not supposed to wait till census day to fill them out? I mean you could be dead by then, and it will be ruined for us all.

We got them back in the homeplace but no forms for our flat yet. I doubt the goverment will do much with the figures though. It will give a good view of how Ireland is shaping up these days.

Anyone else putting their religion down as Jedi ?
They were something like a 1,000 or so people off having to list it as a recognised religion in Australia in a census a few years back

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

    Got em at the w/e.

No doubt the CSO will do plenty with the figures...but the government? Yeah right...they tend to plan after the fact instead of ahead of it...just look at the school and hospital situation in the commuter belts over the last 5 years.

Another thing about the census is that many uninformed or ill-informed people are very suspicious about disclosing some of the data requested on the form...and this year's is pretty inquisitive compared to the last one AFAIR; how many people might lie or embellish truth on the form for fear of action by DSFA or the revenue? It's one thing telling them that it's in strict confidence, but how many people really trust what government bodies have to say?

Oh and religion? Jedi of course :D

In theory they're a good idea but in Ireland too many boggers who live in Dublin claim they live back at home (even though they may only be there 2 days a week) so as to make it seem like there's more people in the area so their hometown gets more money for better services etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭Hermione*

I think many students in particular, who may move each September to a different college address, tend to put their parents residence as their home as that is their 'permanent' address. If you're renting somewhere new for nine months, and that changes annually it's hard to think of that as a permanent home. I live in Dublin twelve months a year, but I still think of my parents home as my home. Dublin is just where I live. That being said, I'll probably be counted on the census at my Dublin address.

Plug: As a history student, please fill them in, and accurately! Historians in fifty years time will love you for it! There's no such thing as to many documents to analyse ;)

A little birdie told Pighead that the girls and boys who distribute the census forms are being paid 2 grand. Is this right or is the little birdie full of crap.

    Correct and right.

A thankless job though...I was talking to our ennumerator last time round ('01?) and she said she'd been round some of the ocal estate several times trying to get forms back and in a lot of cases having to help people fill them out. Our house and another in the street of ten were the only ones that had them filled out and ready to go on the requested date.

Nice money for students I spose...better than traffic surveys or those mapping things you see some of them doing...

census has a nice intent i guess, but when they release the figures for irish speakers i laugh. anyone with a junior cert pass grade writes that they can speak perfect irish

I'm a student living between Dublin and Kilkenny. I will put down Kilkenny as my place of residence as thats where I'll be on midnight April 23rd as specified by the form.

in fairness this time round they actually ask how much you use it in every day life, which is good because technically you couldve trained a parrot to speak irish last time and it wouldve qualified in the census :D

personally id rather they just put down " are you fluent in irish?" it'd sort out all the nonsense

still on the bright side when this census becomes public we can slag off all the gaelgoirs by pointing out how not only are there more people speaking mandarin than them but 100,000 people are now speaking polish too :D so much for "the first language of the nation"

oh and i got mine two, in fact i dont think you'll get it unless your in when the enumerators come knocking. which brings up another point, how many people wont be able to do it because the work night shifts and either wont be in the house or are unconscious at the time? seems to be a very arbitary way of delivering an "important" document:rolleyes:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭luckat

On the race question, I'll be putting mine down as "human".

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,763 ✭✭✭StupidLikeAFox

Jesus have some people here actually read their census forms? Most of the things people are asking about are pretty clear cut, such as students living away from home, the irish language question etc. They're doin this a good while, im pretty sure they have at least a somewhat good idea of what theyre doin. And whatever about the government, but these figures are useful all over, personally id have a minor interest in the population of my hometown, if a big chainstore see a dramatic rise in its population they may consider moving there, and that would bring employment and other shops etc etc. The census isnt just used for the government like!

Although i might put my religion as Jedi for the craic :D

Yep that's what I'm looking forward to the most too :D

I would have liked to see Jedi get enough numbers to get recognised as a religion but it probably won't happen. What's the magic number/percentage here for that anyway?

What about a question asking if one's fluent in English? If only people who spoke and wrote perfect English counted what would the population of our great little state be?

You'll still need to complete part of it, you just don't get to fill in the question asking if your Jedi or not. Students, or people who happen to be staying somewhere other than their normal residence on the 23rd, will need to be listed on two census forms for both addreses but answering different questions on each.

werid i leand on the keyboard and posted a load of "gobble-de-gook" but its not shown up luck enoungh.

In the states some many people stated that they were "jedi" for a religion that its now recognised there, lol.

how many years is it between census?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,078 ✭✭✭tabatha

i got my census form on saturday. came home to find it posted through my front door!!! no note or nothing. i called on monday as i know that this isnt allowed (delived the census the last time around in 2002). guy on the phone was discusted. i was annoyed as these people get paid over 2k for this job which is easy enough. this year to make it easier for them they were given a mobile phone so if no one is home that they can leave there mobile number and get the person to call when they are home and the form can be delivered.

the reason the person needs to be home to get the form is to find out what language it needs to be in. how many people are in the house in case you need more forms or if you need help filling it out and also the family name for their own records.

anyway, the field supervisor of this person who delivered my form came out to me and said that this woman was a "good worker". i was so annoyed. i asked how someone could be a good worker when they werent doing there job properly. turns out that the census were short a lot of people this time around to do the job so the really dont care. makes me now wonder what they will do with the information. also heard one of the field supervisors saying to an enumerator that if they cant get someone they can just make up a form for them! i think the census is a farce to be honest!

its five years between census but because of the foot and mouth outbreak in 2001 it was put of till 2002 hence the reason it has only been 4 years since the last one.

I don't know what to put for the Irish thing. I mean, technically I can say stuff in Irish, but saying "I can speak Irish" still feels like a lie.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,473 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Bond-007, someone from your house will have to enter your details for you.

I'll be out of the house that night so I've filled out a full section in advance. I want my non-gaelgoir, non-religious status recorded thank you very much.

That said, I still reckon a lot of the stats will be BS, most people claiming to be Catholic or fluent Irish speakers will be talking crap.

The woman called today and wasnt expecting somebody to be in. Why?
According to the CSO, our house is down as unoccupied. Now haw the hell did that happen. Our family has been in it since 1950 ffs.

The whole thing seems really badly organised tbh. I know some houses that have received nothing about the census yet. My parents got a form but there are more people living in the house than the form covers - any idea how they could get a second one? Also, I'll probably be moved into a new home by census night - it's a new building so what are the chances that we'll get a form?

    Does anyone know anything?

im putting down i speak irish, mainly because i do so frequently,

my religion will be jedi (i've seen more star wars movies than been to mass in the past couple of years)

and my race will be human after reading above.

how else can i stick it to the man?

Everyone put down "Boardsism" for the religion. If you can convince 10,000 people to do it, it will become a new religion as far as I know.

    That or Jedi. Jedi's cool.

But some of the questions on that thing are really personal.. going into detail about marital status.. and the ethnic background:

    White:
    Irish
    Irish Traveller.

Or something along those lines. i didn't know there was a difference really ..

thats to do with diseases. if your irish you have a higher susceptability of cystic fibrosis thanks to the proliferation of the gene that causes it in irish people (cause of the famine, the gene that causes CF helps prevent against typhus and diptheria which were rampant during that period. the advantage it gave them allowed them to survive but left us with a rate approximatily 50 times higher than the rest of europe:( )

if your just plain white then you dont have that gene on the same level of native irish and theres no need for medical facilities in your area for it. im not sure what the story is on irish traveller but i do no your average traveler's life expectancy is around 50 so theres probably something up there too.

it actually extends to other races. africans for instance suffer from sickle cell anemia (same story as us only their gene protects against maleria) so while this may sound like a racist question its actually one of the best examples as to how the census could work I.E if youve got 100 thousand africans living in an area it might be a good idea to have a clinic that can deal with sickle cell anemia ,just using the words "foreign national" wouldnt cover this :D

    ??? links?

The famine only lasted a few years - I doubt it had that much impact on the genepool tbh.

Also, what the hell is native Irish? No Norman blood? No English? ??? Who even knows about their ancestors in that level of detail?

I feel stupid. No-one told me there was a census on April the 23rd. Now you can call me stupid too.

If "The census is an account of everybody in the country on Census Night" (cso.ie), where do visitors get forms from, and what's their incentive to fill them in?

Why does Ireland hold a census on England's patron saint's day, anyway?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 105 ✭✭Aziraphale

Ok, just read the sample form.

Why don't they have a question on sexuality? That would be a more interesting statistic than some of the stuff on there.
