Hi, I was just wondering if ppl think the English go too far with 1966. Every week its mentioned and it really irritates me after a while. I mean it was 40 years ago! And yet this world cup we will be bombarded about 'the spirit of 66'. I mean fair enough they won it but give us a break:rolleyes:

Yeah, they go way over the top about. They'll probably be talking about it when the next 66 rolls around. :D

Yes because if we won the World Cup we'd be far to modest to ever mention it again.

(Christ we already think we're the dogs bollocks because we come second in the 6nations rugby every year.)

We would do the same if we won it....................;)

For some reason I actually dont agree with that. I think the English just have an obsession that it is their right to win every single world cup when they dont actually have a great team. Tbh I think the world dreads England winning the world cup again:rolleyes:

If we won it the whole country would close down for a week and we would still be talking about in 100's of years so no I don't think they are OTT at all.

If you avoid British television, radio, newspapers etc you will rarely hear much about the 1966 win.

If Albania had won the World cup that year and we watched Albanian television, listened to Albanian radio and read Albanian newspapers, I'm sure we would think that Albania were always going on about their win.

Of course they don't. If we won a World Cup 40 years ago its all you'd hear about. If you don't like it then stop watching British TV and I bet you support a British football team more than an Irish one.

Hmmm I dont agree with that either. I mean the English have an inbuilt superiority complex which is distasteful at the best of times. I genuinely think they are OTT about this. They have some world class plauers but they probrably wont win this world cup. And sure how many times have Brazil and Germany won it?

I dont support any English team.

But do you observe German or Brazilian media on a daily basis?

Fair enough about not supporting an English team but so many Irish people follow an English club before an Irish club and are so anti-England. Hypocracy of the highest order.

Sure we 'nearly won' the World Cup in 1990.. 250,000 people showed up to congratulate the lads.. and its always on the telly (Packy Bonner's save is anyway). If the English were to watch Irish telly then they'd deffo think that something else happened in Italy that summer :D

Im not anti-England at all. I like England but the carry on is ridiculous. Youd think it was some cosmic event over there:rolleyes:

If you avoid british tv, radio and newspapers we'd all be saying how boring it is. They dont rub it in anyones face that they won it in 66. They just remind themselves on what its like to win it when the next one comes around. They dont think they have a god given right to win every match either. Brazil do that and it pays off for them.

I think it must piss off the Scottish,Welsh,Norn Irish off no end as they have no choics BUT to watch British TV which spares no opportunity in reminding themselves of 1966!

I think that someone is watching too much UK TV and then getting annoyed when they don't talk about the Irish team as much as one of their own teams.

I dont expect them to talk about the Irish team at all. I wouldnt mind but they won it at a time when international teams the world over were crap. Maybe its more to do with the fact that they think they can win it every time and 1966 is always brought up:rolleyes:

    Thats a rubbish statement.

A tournament that had Pele, Eusebio, Moore, Charlton, Beckenbaur. To say the teams at theat World Cup were crap shows you know very little about football.

But they do talk about the Irish team as well, when they are involved, far more than they would talk about the French or German teams. But then I don't think that there are a huge number of French and German viewers of the UK media.

It's more a case of that they did win it in the past and reminding themselves that it might be possible again at some point in the future, at least certainly before Ireland will be wining it, and then encouraging support for the team. At least its a better plan than just sitting around complaing that the Germans have won it more times and keep on talking about how many times they won it in the past and all the 'heros' from previous teams, but then they don't watch the German TV, do they?

    Racism! Woo!

The English are racially identical to us, and for the most part are culturally similar. You cannot say that because they get nostalgic about what was a tremendous World Cup win, they are "distasteful", or "over-the-top". We "won"* the War of Independence and we still harp on about it as if it was the greatest achievement known to man.

It's the most ridiculous thing I see repeatedly on boards is this anti-British sentiment. It's time to get over it folks, the English are no different from us.

    *We didn't really though.

oh come on they used to have an empire that spanned the globe give them their 66 victory, if they need to cheat and lie to win and be happy then so be it!

this whole 800 years of oppression really irritates the shít out of me.
i think irish people ought to just get over it.

I'm actually quite sorry for them. This 40 year old victory (and even for this they needed the Germans) is the only thing they can bragg about. Just shows how pathetic their team is.

I belive that they have managed to progress to further stages more often and qualified for more world cups than Ireland has yet to manage? If it upsets you that much then just stop watching Match of the Day and watch the programmes that your own license fee is actually paying for on RTE instead.

no, what irritates me is the sad individuals who feel the need to complain about it out of jealousy. :)

Ah, now THAT was a bad World Cup. Dour sides playing dour football, few more so than the Irish team which returned with the impressive record of 5 draws, no wins and 2 goals. And we still talk about it.

I'd sooner watch Dunphy throw his pencil across the studio than see that save again! ;)

I'm not upset by it, I'm rather amused, I'f all I had to show was a trophy won 40 years ago, I wouldn't bragg about it, but rather be ashamed.
And just for the record my home team (Germany) won the worldcup more times than England, but do you see us bragging about it?

The fact that its mentioned doesnt really bother me. Its the lager louts/hooligans chanting "Two world wars and one world cup" and that craic thats a bit annoyin

Plus that whole "Henmania" crap, hes an average tennis player, and every year hes goin to win Wimbledon in some peoples eyes. Its sorta funny when he does get knocked out, feel a bit sorry for the guy himself

I think it needs to be realised that England have a gold star on their shirt. Lots of countres dont have that. They contiuosly have the potential to win it again and so deserve the right to reflect on their victory and compare it to their current squad. If it bothers you, you can avoid everything english. But that might mean avoiding everything brazilian, german, french, urugauan (sp) and every other country that has won the world cup. good luck.
