Does anyone know if it is possible to proceed to the next year if you have failed a module?

Im in CA and I think Im going to fail topics. Im doing quite well in everything else though. Will this compensate topics?
    Thanks!

It depends on how much you failed the module by - eg. if you got say 35% you would probably be compensated. It depends on what the program board of your course decides at the end of the year. Failing a module can result in you not proceeding but doesn't automatically mean you won't proceed a.f.a.i.k.

You have a second chance at the exam part of the module during the Repeat Exams in August.

If you fail that then you will [i think] have to repeat that module.

And, erm. Topics isint too complex as a subject from what I remember of it. But that was two years ago.

They decided to toughen it up this year. Its changed to 100% continuous assessment and its very difficult to get a decent mark in the essays.

ok having failed alot of exams in dcu heres the story

if u fail by gettin 34%(could be 30% just can't remember) or lower you can not compinsate if you get between 35% and 39% then u can

to compinsate you must have passed a module by over 70% plus the amount you failed by eg if you get 37% in one module and 73% in another you can pass buy compinsation. You must achive the differance in 1 module alone eg if you get 36% in one and 72% in two moudles this does not count for compinsation u need 74% in one

now if you fail by getting 34% (maybe 29%) and you say its all continuos assesment then you will have talk with the lectuer of that module about arranging a summer project for you to do instead of a repeat exam (some modules offer this as standerd) then presuming you pass ur repeat u will recive a mark of 40% not matter how well you do.

all of this is dependent on the head of your program so be nice to them

my best advise is do the work to pass failing is alot of hassel and you will always regreat it

edit: if this is a semester one module only talk to the lec in charge of it as soon as you get your results and they mite work out a project you can do in sem 2 in lou of a repeat exam

as far as i know, you can get compensated up to a max of 15% in a 5 credit module, 10 in a ten credit module and 5 in a 15 cred module. you dont need to get over 70, you just need to get double what you need to pass... eg. you get 25% in one 5 cred module, you need 30% over the pass mark in another 5 cred module to get compensation. a lot depends on the importence of the subject too ....

You may also be lucky and if you fail only one module you can get down on your hands and knees and pleed to be allowed to carry it over into second year, they usually allow that

Why arent the guidelines for this set out simply in stone for us?

    So many people are unsure.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,330 ✭✭✭✭Amz

    Because it's DCU?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 409 ✭✭d@rk l0rd

I don't think there are any guidelines. Each lecturer and department seem to make up their own rules and often these conflict with the DCU "rules".
I've often been told one thing by a lecturer or program board chair and the exact opposite in the Registry!!

When a decision had to be made if I could progress into second year I had to wait for the head of my course to make the decision which then had to be backed up by the head of the science school.

Even when I went to the welfare officer she said that the final decision made by a course head is the decision that is then set in concrete. It just has to be approved by the head of department for formalities

Yep it's possible to move onto the next year. In 3rd year I failed a subject, failed the repeat (20 something percent) and still managed to compensate and get into 4th year.:p

I'm seriously freaking out... I'm shaking. I'm definitely going to fail my exams.. there's no doubt about it.. what's going to happen if I do? :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,436 ✭✭✭Suaimhneach

    what course are you doing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,762 ✭✭✭✭Winters

If you fail your exam then you will have to sit the repeat exam in August, they were about €40 to repeat iirc.

If you fail the repeat exam then you will have to pay and repeat the exam the following year.

Yeah, I'm going to fail Probability ( at least, it's highly probable :v: ). But like, fúck it, repeats! \o/

My course is rather dull anyway, so it would want to pick up next semester for me to retain any interest in the area. Otherwise I might reconsider my chosen degree. I feel like I'm doing a fecking maths course.

Haha thats exactly how I'm feeling about CASE2 right now as well. And I think I'll be failing one or two exams as well

Edit: Just saw the maths course comment. Didnt come up in the main post but came up in the quote. I was just saying to my friend how its full of useless maths crap and if I wanted to learn maths I'd have done another course

Heh, I wonder how that part disappeared from my original post o_O. I remember writing it.

Yeah, I'm doing CAIS2, Stats next semester with that mad woman again; count yourself lucky :).

It costs a lot more than €40 to have to repeat an exam. Last year, it cost €157 whether you had to sit just one exam or ten of them. Repeating the exam on its own in the next academic year costs €330 per exam. It's not cheap!! :(

I'm doing chemical and pharmaceutical science.. 1st year.. had a very rough semester though so the exams are going to be very tough.. *sigh*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,436 ✭✭✭Suaimhneach

Yeah, I thought that was a load of crap, no matter how many you have to repeat its 157, so if you only do one, it cost that much, but if you do all of them, it costs that much. "Administrative purposes" my arse.

Lynibeth, there are a load of things you can do if it's been a rough semester, like talking to a year head/course lecturer, and asking for advice.

As I said before, there is a lot you can do between now and exam time. If needs be, just study the bare minimum for a pass in each subject tbh. Best of luck.

    @ Lynibeth

I failed 1st year common entry so I know how you feel.

Physics - go through past papers, all the questions are the same

Chemistry - concentrate on one area, either inorganic or analytical, but be able to answer short questions from the one you're not concentrating on.

Biology - is a b*tch. lots of learning. look at the sample papers and do out sample answers for all the main parts. Proteins, carbs, lipids etc

you're not looking for spectacular results, just a pass. the closer to 40% you can get your marks, the more likely it is that they will compensate you. CS101 and CS102 are added together to give your final grade for chemistry. Same for BE101, BE102 and PS122, PS123.

Put loads of work in next semester and you should be fine, and even if the worst happens the most repeats you'll have is 3. Next semester is easier for biology, genetics is easy to learn so is microbiology. next semester chemistry is physical and organic - both passable.

and if its been a rough sememster, speak to your course co-ordinator. i think for you its peter kenny.

    good luck!

You think that's bad?? If you appeal a summer result, the exams office closing date for registering to repeat the exam is just before you receive the outcome to your appeal meaning they charge you an extra €50 "late registration fee" to sit the repeat exam!!! Complaining in DCU gets you nowhere.

Lynibeth Im doing the same course as you and Im repeating first year.

The course reallt isnt as scary as it looks for physics.Learn all the short questions on past exam papers and sample papers, they are always repeated. For the long questions just get the sample long questions(on the physics site belonging to Enda) and learn the long question about the universal measurements. That usually always comes up if you look at past papers.

Cant give much advice on chemistry or biology as Im repeating them but as rugbug said youneed to do mayor learning off for biology and in chemistry youshould learn one of the sections and then look at past papers and learn off those short questions.

Also look at experiements youve done in biology. All those experiements link back to what is thought in lectures

ok.. tnx everyone for ur help.. but to be honest ive gone beyond caring now.. I haven't slept in a few days and im just crying constantly.. probably not to do with the exams now..

I'm not going to tlk to neone despite the suggestions I should.. They won't understand..

    thanks for all ur help..

    bye

They don't need to understand how you feel Lynibeth, they need to understand that you are not in the best frame of being to be sitting exams.

It is *always* hard to do exams the first time around in college, trust me, I nearly failed last year because I let the pressure get to me, there is an old thread of me saying nearly the same as you.

Seriously. Go and say it to them. Not only will it make you feel better, they might actually offer you an alternative, or at least, it'll be noted at the exam boards.

There are *always* repeats. Hundreds [probably thousands] sit them every year, in DCU and all Colleges/Unis. It. is. not. the. end. of. the. world. I promise you.

I'll send you a PM as well. :) Don't stress.

Try not to worry - they are only exams and you can repeat as many of them as you need to in August. Hundreds of people have to do repeats, it's not a big deal at all.

You can also talk to the folks in Student Affairs (in the pavillion building behind the canteen - they can provide you with counselling and great advice) and the SU.

Just do as well as you can - take time to read the exam paper properly and start with the question in your strongest area. After a little while, you'll settle into the exam OK. Everyone gets blanks - just put down your pen and don't panic. You just need to pass each one and you can be compensated if you fail some of them.

If you are going through some issues outside of DCU, it is possible to defer sitting your exams until August. If you're allowed to defer, you won't have to pay the repeat fees.
    Good luck. :D
