Well my local paper - the Leinster/Offaly/Laois Express does report any court goings ons, which generally does include young Irish lads doing something that involves drunk & disorderly.

You can bet your two pence that if a boat load of us landed over in Vilnius (after a short bus ride obviously), and we started kickin off and stabbing each other, one can be sure that The Lithuanian Star will be reporting an 'upsurge in violent crime among foreign nationals'..

Then people on boards.lt will come on, be 'racist', and demand something be done about all the bloody foreigners.

Who is right? Me I think you'll find.. :D

*Grabs his helmet and increases pace to a decent march.. onwards to Poland - and then the rest of the world!!*

re : Lithuanians and eastern europeans featured in local paper.

Sarah: I have the local paper here infront of me ehre are the stories relating to people in court

Woman threatens doctors staff at knifepoint
A 32 year old Limerick Woman who suffers from depression grabbed a doctors secretary by the air and held a knife a court has heard. Mary Lynch, with an address at Barrington Street, Limerick pleaded guilty last week to a number of charges arising from an incident at a doctors clinic on the southside of the city on October 18, 2005
    (Limerick Post 7 January 2006 Page 5)

Total court related stories in Limerick post - 1

Lets have a look at the leader then, shall we?

Total court related stories of any description found in the weekly Leader Date 7th January 2005 - 0

Of the stories of note before limerick district court this week were

The owner of some kiddy porn from Birdhill
    http://www.live95fm.ie/newsroom/indepth.asp?id=68822&pt=n

A murder triel which was struck out because of administritive errors
    http://www.live95fm.ie/newsroom/indepth.asp?pt=n&id=68806

After all that I don't see how the local papers are "full of stories" about non nationals before the courts. and I'm after not only going through the two local papers but had a look around 95fm's website also.

    but what does that prove?

now, dont get me wrong, im not having a go, but what i would like to know is what is the point in pointing out that someone is factually wrong.

are you trying to change someones opinion by showing that the information they are basing their opinion is factually incorrect, or is there something else.

i think thats is where a lot of these discussions are falling down.

it seems to get bogged down in a tit for tat pointless petty point scoring arguments and pedantic semantics that resolve nothing.

My personal experiences with Lithuanians/Polish are:

    - Worked with quite a few Lithuanian girls. They are amongst the nicest people I have ever met, friendly beyond belief, good English, good workers and great craic. This is all while bringing up young children on minimum wage and living in pretty poor accomodation. No criminal activities involved here.

    - I work in a shop and every Saturday, without fail, Eastern European men (be they Polish/Lithuanian/Latvian/Estonian etc...) come into the shop drunk. A huge proportion of customers on a Saturday are Eastern European males, and its not a coincidence that we happen to be next-door to a large off license.

    - Recently, three male Lithuanians were in an accident (drink driving) on a road near my house (Link). My dad (A Garda for ~25 years) was on the scene quite soon after the crash and said he has never seen anything like it in his life. The car (stolen with British plates) had destroyed an entire brick wall, and ended up upside down on the road. One of the men died, one lost a hand and miraculously the third survived. Something very similar happened last Christmas time, when two drunk Eastern European males crashed into a car outside my estate late one night (waaaaay over the drink limit) and walked casually away from the crash while the car they hit lay in a ditch.

So, very mixed experiences. The media does cover a lot of foreign crime in Ireland, which doesn't necessarily mean that the proportions are any higher of course, but it could well be true (especially going by some of the experiences I've had).

The main factor always seems to be alcohol, almost without fail there is drink involved. Next time you hear a story involving Eastern European crime see if there is alcohol involved.

Are you trying to say that we should let people claim fictional opinion as fact?

Changing the OP opinion is a moot point. I would be more worried that someone comes along and says "I hear on boards.ie that they said ....." and then claim it as some sort of fact. Its that very reason the pram story has lived for so long.

Oh man, what is with all the victimisation here.
The pc brigade this, The pc brigade that.
    Gimme a fuc'kin break ffs.

Seeing as its anal to demand linkage now(out the window with the wonders of the web we go), Let me provide some anecdotal evidense. Most of the people I know have used racial slurs and words in my presence. Now where exactly are these hoardes of pc warriors in Irish society?
Do they exist just because the media in this country is covering its ass legaly and socially? No.
Do they exist because Irish people on the net say so?
    No.
In fact just how is opinion on the net meant to reflect on Irish society when we have some of the worst connection rates in the world?

Have a look at this thread ffs! Count how many posters whine about pc in comparision to those who actually are.

In fact it's quite the Irony that those who feel victimised appeal to same strain of victimisation pc is in fact based on. Put the fiddles away please.

Maybe you hear about Eastern Europeans alot more because of the way the media manipulate the facts. If she's gonna base her story on some article from a piece of **** like the 'Sunday World', then it's hardly going to be a fair, properly analysed story.

People obviously buy The Sunday World, as it is still on the market. So, what is your point kid? Or are you being racist against people who buy and read the Sunday world. Give over .... and stop giving out about nothing!!

The Sunday World and other red tabloids like The Sun, The Star and The Mirror are rubbish.

Anyone who reads them or takes them seriously is a loser and deserves to be shot with a crossbow.

    In the face.

Her name is sarah_lk and she has posted in the Limerick pages so I can only presume her local papers are the Limerick Post, Limerick Leader and Limerick Chronicle and yes they more or less do report everytime an person, Irish or foreign, is in court for a relatively high profile criminal case - they all have sections on the goings-on down in the local court.

On a side issue I once got clip from the Limerick Post's report on a criminal damage case listed as Football365.com's Mediawatch "Quote of the Day", an achievement of which I am very proud, but that's a story for another thread.

I'd be interested to know who she is doing the piece for?

I understand people buy the Sunday World, it's still an awful sensationalist piece of crap though, alot of people bought Crazy Frog, alot of people supported Hitler.

Some of the stuff in this thread reminds me of a rule I read over at holymoly.co.uk's Rules of Modern Life:

"Right wing journos: you can't possibly know what the 'silent majority' think, the clue is in the word 'silent'."

sarah lk is claiming that the local newspapers contains lots and lots of stories about foreign nationals in courts. sarah lk is in the same area as myself and reads the same local papers as myself. I buy these papers every day. while I have seen some stories about foreign nationals before the courtsin the local papers, it is a lot rarer than she is makeing out.

I just used this weeks papers as these are the ones I have to hand at the moment. I could come back next week and do the same thing.

There are two local papers in Liemrick. The Limerick post, which is so bad they give it away for free, and the Leader, which has more adverts than news. only major court stories are covered in it. The post is the only one who will have weekly reports from the district court.

Tabloids are totally devoid of merit.
They are invasive, inaccurate, hurtful, rigid in their narrow-minded beliefs, accusatory, sanctimonious, simplistic in matters of morality and economics, fixated with minor celebrities and anti-intellectual.

    Guys
    you're defending the indefensible.

    Not cool.

tbh many of the "quality" broadsheets could be accused of the many of those things but they just pitch it at a more sophisticated market

People everywhere are just people, so this thread is basically crap. I like some eastern europeans, I dislike some eastern europeans. Now replace 'eastern europeans' with any nationality I've met.
