yes, A plane fell apart in the air after take off over new york. It was headed for the dominican republic.

    quoted from pigmans link above,
'Moments after the plane took off, witnesses said they saw what appeared to be an explosion. Parts of the plane began breaking away and wreckage was found in at least four locations, Giuliani said. '

If I remember correctly that plane came down because they took off too soon after the plane before took off. Flew into the "wash" of the other jets engine emmisions and it caused the plane to break up.

I heard of another plane that crashed outside new york some time ago. Seems 2 new pilots were flying and were from a hotter climate. The plan was de iced before the flight (ice was taken off the shell of the plane). However they were delayed on the runway and didn't know/forgot they should have de iced again. The weight of the ice took the plane down soon after take off.

I love flying sure the turbulance can give people a fright (me included) but as someone pointed out already you are more likely to die on the way to the airport rather then a airplane accident.

I'm getting flying lession for Xmas can't wait for it, it will be cool. Hope to go for my pilots license in the near future too.

Plus my best friend's dad brought me and my friend flying to belfast in a 4 seater cessna when we were about 13 and he let me take off from Belfast airport, the power and freedom you get from being able to fly is amazing, I've loved flying ever since.

And it was a nice sunny day and the skies were blue, I couldn't think of a more perfect setting.

is that based on more likely per mile or per journey though?

I remember saying that fact to someone and them telling me that the fact actually says you are more likely to die per mile in a car crash than in a plane crash however per journey it isnt that far off
