Do you ever tip?

In a taxi this evening, gettin' on well with the driver which had been on the go since 8 this morning got to my destination and the fare came to €6.55 had a twenty with me and nothing smaller so i handed her the twenty and asked for ten back.

does any bodyelse feel obliged to do so?

My girlfriend complains as i always tip... unless there's some reason not to. They're rude.. or food's cold if ordering food in or whatever!

Of course not! In certain circumstanses i will though. If the driver is nice and the the change is not huge like 2-3 euro ill usually just tell him to keep it, its benefited me as i now have the private number of a local taxi guy that i can phone whenever

. Really helps at 3 in the morning when everyone is scrammbling for one.

Yeah, mine's usually substantially less than 50% though. But if the driver's ok, usually give him a euro or so.

i often get the feeling that taxi drivers expect a tip, you know the awkward moment between when you give them the money and you're waiting for your change...it'd usually be a small amount, like a euro or something but i'd wait for it. Its not a matter of being scabby, its just they provide a service, and the charges are clearly set out for that service so i dont think tipping is necessary, and to be honest most taxi drivers i've had moan and moan and dont exactly make the journey pleasant....

had to change the amount above cos it was looking cheap!

I do if there's some change left... For example, the other night I got a pizza, it cost €13, and I had €20, so I gave him it and asked for the fiver back. If it cost €15, I wouldn't give him the 5er, and I wouldn't go in and get some change for him.

So, if I'm presented with an excuse to tip, then I generally will, but I won't go out of my way to do it

I'd be the same, the whole taxi one is a bit odd. I would nearly always tip but can see people's reason for not.

I'm in NY/NJ so you are kind of obliged to tip for virtually everything at this stage. It's bloody ridiculous most of the time, you can barely fart without having to tip someone. I don't mind tipping waiting/service staff at 15-20% because they get **** wages here and usually I find them to be pretty helpful. It also pays dividends to tip bar staff here well, especially if you're on the shorts as you'll make your money back in the size of the shots. They're usually not tight arses with optics on the bottles preventing a shot from being more than 35.5mls, grrrr those things make me angry!

As for when I was at home, I'd usually tip the taxi driver if he's not been a bell end or has been fast/sound and service staff the usual.

Hell ye, i always give the Barman bigg tips

, it really does pay off. I was out a few weeks ago at some club, was tipping this same barman all night, at about 3 when they where closing up he gave me 2 shots and a bottle of carlsberg free

I try too, when I have convenient change, but no one really expects me to, being young...in fact I sometimes get stuff free/discount (I love you hat shop man!)(And man from lemon)

I usually Tip everyone.. Taxi's, Restraunt's, Hairdresser's & delivery guys... and when I buy stuff from the shop I usually just say "Put the change in the Box"

It's not because I feel as if I have to do it! I just remember when I was younger and used to work in a hotel! We used to be so gratefull if we got a tip!!!

+ the fact that I hate having 'foxy money' in my purse!!

i dont tip taxi drivers usually cos taxis are so expensive here, last night the fare was 8euro, i gave him a tenner, he took ages counting out 2euro in 20 cents, but i still waited!! the fare shoulda only been 5euro so technically im givin a tip

I tip some taxi drivers, not all, just those who are nice. thats about it really. In this country you generally dont get the service that would necessitate a tip.

Yup... Can't understand why people tip taxi drivers, they earn almost as much in a week as most normal hard working people would earn in a month.

where i am the taxis are more expensive than dundalk, thats something ive noticed thats different, there's one taxi company for a town bigger than dundalk, but then more younger people have cars

just out of curiousity..
Why does everyone expect people to leave a tip?
Just because the american expect it doesn't mean we have to follow do we?
Are we just a flock of sheep?

Every one has a job and they get paid..
It's understandable if job like waitressing in the state pay like s***..
But in ireland it pays almost just like any other normal job already anyway..
Yes it's nice for the people getting it..
But it's not necessary..

To be frank.. with the state of the economy for the past 2 years..
It's not like money grows on trees..
Then people go and complaint that they don't have enough to spend from the wages they earn..
They complaint everything cost too much..
It's time to ask for another raise..

It is probably because when you ask for another raise, the employer have to cover their extra expenditure from somewhere else..

What kind of attitude is this?

Cultural, isn't it? Here, if you're working as a waiter, say, and someone doesn't tip you, you feel that you haven't done a good job. And the wages are bad, so tips are needed.

In Japan, people get *really insulted* if you tip them - in fact, they'll chase you down the street shouting "Customer, customer, you left your money" (in Japanese, obviously) if you leave money on the table. Sooo embarrassing, especially when the whole street helps to return your money to you.

Their attitude there is that they're well paid for the work, and they do the job really well for the pride of it.

But here, yes, I always tip. Used to feel awkward about it until I spent a bit of time in the service industries and saw it from the other side.

I tip for taxi's unless I feel the driver is trying to screw me or takes the long way home. I don't tip barmen if I order at the bar, but I will tip lounge staff. Always tip 10% min in restaraunts. Usually tip barber.

I can be over generous sometimes though, I think this is due to working in pubs for many years during school and college so I know what they go thru and how a tip can make a difference in service.

In america tipping is much more serious. But thats cos people who get tipped are on a sh1te hourly rate (3 dollars an hour or something) so rely on their tips as their main income.

Tipping in bars is hard to get used to over here. You need to have dollar bills in your wallet when you buy drinks which isn't always the case :P

I never tip in taxis as I was not aware it was the done thing in Ireland.

I always tip in restaurants unless the service is truly dire.

Yeah exactly, "weeerrr de bleeedin de-reggalaashin blah blah blah".
Taxis are a rip-off as it is... yeah, so I'm late for work at my minimum wage job, so I have to get a taxi, the cost of this 15 minute journey is more than what I'd make in an hour... and you want a tip aswell?!
Ah... no, I think I'll be waiting for every cent of my change thx.

I'd tip in places where I know the people working there are being paid crap money, but I think that only encourages employers to continue to pay shít money because "ah you've always got your tips, so your wages really work out at...".
Personally I wouldn't like to be depending on tips to cover the rent, especially in this country.

Yes I undestand that if the wages are bad situation..
I agree, no doubt..

But whether or not "someone doesn't tip you, you feel that you haven't done a good job" is true or not..
This is optional expectation..
This is additional thinking from the person who give you the service but it doesn't mean they are right..
Do you see what I mean?

It's like, just because I ride the bicycle really well..
I can do all sorts of trick like riding with no hand..
Does that mean I'm to expect my parents to give me a car?
If my parent don't give me a car..
Should I think that I'm crap at riding a bicycle?
And feel discourage?

I know it's a stupid analogy..
But it kinda gets the point across.. IMO
