Smoking doesn't kill people, death does.

Interesting thread. A combination of a few things started me off as far as I remember - it was ten years ago now -... stress, peer pressure, a girlfriend who smoked like a chimney, and the fact that I worked in a busy bar in Limerick at the time.

Mind you, I've cut down a lot recently, due to a number of factors. I started on Marlboro Reds, went to Marlboro Lights, then Benson and Hedges XL (girlfriend's influence), then moved back to Dublin and smoked Marlboro Lights again and on to Marlboro Blue. I'm now on Silk Cut Purple but smoking a lot less per day than I used to (5 or so, tops - but yes, much more when out socialising).

I am planning on quitting, I just don't know when yet.

Started at the age of 13 or so, in a typical enough teenage reaction to being told I couldn't do something. From then it was an occasional enough thing until about the age of 16 when I first started working and going to the pub. Even at that stage a 20 box would last me the week. I quit for 9 months during leaving cert but started having a couple again when I was out celebrating school being finished that summer. Then I hit first year, started seeing a girl called Jillian who smoked like an infantryman on the front line and within a few days I was a 20 a day man. I've cut back to eight or nine cigarettes a day now and I'm gearing up to have another go at quitting but I know I'd never make it through the Christmas so it'll probably be a New Years thing...

I have been passive smoking for years. It started when someone lit up a cigarette near me many years ago; I can't remember exactly when. Fortunately I don't passive smoke as much as I used to.

That actor actually never smoked real ciggies.... he hates them.
He only smoked herbal cigs on set :D

No he did smoke but by the time the series came along he had quit so he smoked herbal fags on TV. AS a reformed smoker i can tell you it is really easy to see actors who never smoked, he handled them like a pro.

I statretd mostly from smoking weed and having fags in my pocket that way.

I dunno really. I remember seeing this cat getting killed by curiosity. I was so traumatized I figured I'd have a cigarette.

Ha ha.... maybe it's the time of morning, but that made me laugh. Incidently, I think it's un-fair that people at work are allowed "Fag Breaks".... when I worked in Statoil the smokers would have about 10 fag breaks in an 8 hour shift.... it takes maybe 5 minutes to smoke a fag... if you rush it, so they were getting, on top of their lunch break, an extra 50 minutes doing nothing. NOT FAIR I TELL THEE!

I started when I was 12 or so, I can still remember that cigarette at the back of the church (during mass) with my older brother ... I practically puked, I was very green after it I can tell you. But I kept at it and didnt stop until four years ago - 22 years smoking. Tried to figure out how much I spent on them before but all the price changes down through the years made it too difficult to bother.

Bah, annoyed me too people getting breaks to smoke and depending on me not smoking so they could. Now I work from home - take a break whenever i want and no nasty smoke smells.:D

i started when i was about 14 or so, thought it was cool back then.... gave them up for a year when i was 18 and then stress got me back on them and have been smoking since unfortunately... i really want to give them up, i have seriously cut down, but just cant kick the habbit completely.... it is just too hard to stop especially when i have a few drinks.. hopefully will try to quit again soon... fingers crossed anyway

I have the stupidest ever reason for starting to smoke. I didnt start until i was 20......I remember being slightly drunk and taking a cigarette and I couldnt inhale. I was annoyed that I couldnt, and I thought right im going to learn....then I did...and now im smoking upwards of 20 a day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,387 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

about 15 started. innocent and naive thinking, "if they are legal they cant be that bad", smoked them quick for a cheap buzz. Then discovering they are considered more addicitve than heroin in all medical journals/textbooks I have read... bit late in the day when I was on upto 80 a day.
If kids ask me to buy them now I answer "I would sooner buy you cannabis, but not that ****, why the fuk do you want to smoke it".
far better drugs out there, cheaper these days too...

There is no sensible reason to start.

Doesn't sound too sensible to me.

started on weed first, so i needed a pouch, when the weed was gone i'd still have most of my pouch left so i just smoked rollies till i had enough money to buy ganj again

You could extend that to alcohol too mate. Tbh, when has sensibility played much part in our lives? Most of the time it's quick decisions or prejudice etc etc.

The I went out with a smoker and it became our 'thing' to hang out an Bewleys with a pack of Marlboro Reds and an esspresso.

I didn't start buying my onw until I was 17 and realised I could use cigarettes to help control my weight.

wow thats really weird thats what me and mates used to do, doss off school hang out in Bewleys with a pack of Marlboro Reds and coffee!

used to be 10 a day, now only when i'm out drinking.

I've found tho that i actually lose weight when i'm not smoking!!

I smoked a Havana Cigar on Stephens Night... Nothing else since then, or for a few months before that.

The bad one... All my friends had to go outside to smoke during a night out. I went out too so as not to be alone. Eventually took it up so as not to be the outsider, just smoking maybe 3 a night when I was out with them. I've been on and off them since. Seems to go in a 6 week cycle of:
    - Smoking a good bit
    - Deciding I really should quit
    - Cold turkey
    - Being rather impressed that I quit so easily. Brag.
    - Smoking one or two in a given week
    - Realising that if I gave up so easily this time, I could again. They aren't that bad, the few that I smoke
    - Smoking on nights out
    - Smoking during the day too
    <return to beginning>

    Anyone else notice this pattern?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,578 ✭✭✭Scraggs

snappie yeah that pattern is really similar to me! i started back when i was 16/17 and of late thats pretty much actually whats happened. wow its all so clear now

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,357 ✭✭✭snappieT

And I started at 17 also!
I'm in the "Realising that if I gave up so easily this time, I could again. They aren't that bad, the few that I smoke" stage at the moment. Someone please snap me out of it.
