Just curious. For me it was going through a stressful breakup mainly, and also cigarette smoking man on the x-files for making it look so cool :D So what made u take up this wonderful habit?

We thought we were so cool hanging around outside school with our fags, ah so misguided!

well I gave up two weeks ago

the reason I started when I was 15 was to 'look cool' (yeh real cool..spewing your guts up.....)

Later on it was a stress thing........ a weight management thing :)

Ummm but I am cool here

Unless I have a drink like tonight
    grrrr
then I could kill for one

When I changed schools I hung around at lunchtime wit guys who smoked, and they often offered me cigarettes. Kinda impolite to turn down, so I took em. And, so it began...

Didn't buy a packet meself until I was a month or so short of my 18th so pretty late by most standards.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,846 ✭✭✭Le Rack

yeah in an effort to stop myself being a heavy smoker or whatever, I always bummed only ever got a pack myself once or twice!

I've only recently started (21). A combination of the fact I've been smoking weed for about 2 years, and my girlfriend smokes. I'm really trying to not get properly started but it's so hard!

just curious, do you find you smoke more when your stressed out, or socializing?

    stressed!
I hadn't smoked in months, and then after the first gig I played with my band, I was so nervous that the first thing I did when I came off stage was scab a fag!

Knock it on the head now then - the longer you go on, the harder it is to kick the habit. It took me three attempts over the course of a couple of years to give up (off them 3 years this christmas :D).

I was a cool 13-year-old, so smoking came with the territory. Occupational hazard.

I don't smoke but I have smoked due to drunkenness and will probably do it again.

I very much doubt I'll ever buy a packet.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,783 ✭✭✭Binomate

To look cool, I gave up last Friday. Being too lazy to get off my arse and buy smokes is my determination. The big test will be on Monday morning when in all probability I will give into temptation, walk into a shop and buy a pack of smokes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭pretty*monster

I used to bum smokes off people when I was 15/16, for no real reason, just for the hell of it.

The I went out with a smoker and it became our 'thing' to hang out an Bewleys with a pack of Marlboro Reds and an esspresso.

I didn't start buying my onw until I was 17 and realised I could use cigarettes to help control my weight.

One more cool 13yr old here.

Stress/study makes giving up quite difficult. I don't even lie to myself about quitting anymore. Not for the forseeable future anyway. I've alot of stress and study lined up.

i was drinking cans of fosters out the back of a boat shed and got drunk so i decided i would try one or 2. woke up in the morning with 15 or so remaining so smoked them and continued with the goal of being able to take a drag without coughing. worst mistake i ever made tbh but i am off them 2 months or so now :)

I started smoking at age 19 when I was trying to get off with a (smoking) hottie in college. It worked, she lasted three weeks, took me 17 years to quit smoking though. Off them for two and a half years since my aunt died of lung cancer.

Smoking is pleasant, it gives you something to do with your hands but the evidence against them is undeniable. I still miss them sometimes.

I started smoking when I started going to the pub (around age 16) after school. The people I went with would just offer them, I'd accept the offer and they went down well with a pint.
Then after the pub we'd go to a club and I'd end up buying some and waking up with a few left the next morning and just thinking "Ah there's no point in throwing them away" and soon I was hooked :(

I started smoking when I was 16. When the ban wasnt in, started going to pubs and the like. Then when I was 17 I went out with this big smoker, and thats really what got me hooked.
I have cut down, but love smoking so much!

My dad worked in P.J. Carrolls and brought home about 600 free fags every week.Could you resist?.

Smoked joints pretty hardcore for a couple of years, cut down on that and started smoking cigarettes in Prague last year. So cheap (20 box is ~€1 - €1.50), readily available and with little or no stigma attached.

Since coming back to €6.30-a-box-and-stand-out-in-the-cold-land I've cut well down on both.

I knew that.. still though :D What I found funny was how he start smoking, in the episode where he is assassinating JFK, and setting Oswald up as a patsy, Oswald gives his cigarettes to cigarette smoking man and he lit the first one up in the cinema after the assassination :D

I started when I was 12. It was when I got my first job working on a farm. The guys I worked with smoked as did my older brother who was much cooler than me. So basically I smoked to be cool and fit it. It took me 12 years to shake the habit but finally I did.

To those kids who say they won't quit due to stress with school and exams. Stress doesn't ever end, wait until you have car payments and house payments and a sick child up all night vomitting and then have to go to work the next day with a boss breathing down your neck about missed deadlines. Ah yes you think that won't ever be you but it eventually happens to most of us. If you don't learn better ways to manage stress than smoking then stress will kill you one way or another.

When i was working in a pub and everyone else did and i dunno i just started having them (i.e. "borrowing" fags) when we'd stay after hours drinking and playing cards. i didn't want to be a scab though so i started buying my own.

Interesting thread. A combination of a few things started me off as far as I remember - it was ten years ago now -... stress, peer pressure, a girlfriend who smoked like a chimney, and the fact that I worked in a busy bar in Limerick at the time.

Mind you, I've cut down a lot recently, due to a number of factors. I started on Marlboro Reds, went to Marlboro Lights, then Benson and Hedges XL (girlfriend's influence), then moved back to Dublin and smoked Marlboro Lights again and on to Marlboro Blue. I'm now on Silk Cut Purple but smoking a lot less per day than I used to (5 or so, tops - but yes, much more when out socialising).

I am planning on quitting, I just don't know when yet.

Started at the age of 13 or so, in a typical enough teenage reaction to being told I couldn't do something. From then it was an occasional enough thing until about the age of 16 when I first started working and going to the pub. Even at that stage a 20 box would last me the week. I quit for 9 months during leaving cert but started having a couple again when I was out celebrating school being finished that summer. Then I hit first year, started seeing a girl called Jillian who smoked like an infantryman on the front line and within a few days I was a 20 a day man. I've cut back to eight or nine cigarettes a day now and I'm gearing up to have another go at quitting but I know I'd never make it through the Christmas so it'll probably be a New Years thing...

I have been passive smoking for years. It started when someone lit up a cigarette near me many years ago; I can't remember exactly when. Fortunately I don't passive smoke as much as I used to.

No he did smoke but by the time the series came along he had quit so he smoked herbal fags on TV. AS a reformed smoker i can tell you it is really easy to see actors who never smoked, he handled them like a pro.

I statretd mostly from smoking weed and having fags in my pocket that way.

I dunno really. I remember seeing this cat getting killed by curiosity. I was so traumatized I figured I'd have a cigarette.

Ha ha.... maybe it's the time of morning, but that made me laugh. Incidently, I think it's un-fair that people at work are allowed "Fag Breaks".... when I worked in Statoil the smokers would have about 10 fag breaks in an 8 hour shift.... it takes maybe 5 minutes to smoke a fag... if you rush it, so they were getting, on top of their lunch break, an extra 50 minutes doing nothing. NOT FAIR I TELL THEE!

I started when I was 12 or so, I can still remember that cigarette at the back of the church (during mass) with my older brother ... I practically puked, I was very green after it I can tell you. But I kept at it and didnt stop until four years ago - 22 years smoking. Tried to figure out how much I spent on them before but all the price changes down through the years made it too difficult to bother.

Bah, annoyed me too people getting breaks to smoke and depending on me not smoking so they could. Now I work from home - take a break whenever i want and no nasty smoke smells.:D

i started when i was about 14 or so, thought it was cool back then.... gave them up for a year when i was 18 and then stress got me back on them and have been smoking since unfortunately... i really want to give them up, i have seriously cut down, but just cant kick the habbit completely.... it is just too hard to stop especially when i have a few drinks.. hopefully will try to quit again soon... fingers crossed anyway

I have the stupidest ever reason for starting to smoke. I didnt start until i was 20......I remember being slightly drunk and taking a cigarette and I couldnt inhale. I was annoyed that I couldnt, and I thought right im going to learn....then I did...and now im smoking upwards of 20 a day!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,386 ✭✭✭✭rubadub

about 15 started. innocent and naive thinking, "if they are legal they cant be that bad", smoked them quick for a cheap buzz. Then discovering they are considered more addicitve than heroin in all medical journals/textbooks I have read... bit late in the day when I was on upto 80 a day.
If kids ask me to buy them now I answer "I would sooner buy you cannabis, but not that ****, why the fuk do you want to smoke it".
far better drugs out there, cheaper these days too...
