Nothing like a neutral website to give you the facts.

Smoking is bad OK. Everybody gets that to talk down at people in this manner is pointless. It might work with children but it might not last to stop them smoking forever.

I trust this site in the same manner I trust a tabbaco companies website.

I would like to quit but thats easier said than done.

I know a lot of people who smoke and although its not someting im in any way fond of, I certainly havent heard of any of them getting gangrene from it.

Its the same as anything. Those sites are just propaganda. I woudnt read anything into that.

Scare tactics never work, in fact it usually only makes the smoker desire a cigarette even more.
Even the cigarette companies know this and actually use it in their advertising.
Anyone remember the Venus Fly Trap ad?
Or the one with the knot in the silk rope?

how bout this? instead of giving philip morris your money, you all give me 20-30 euro a week for a few years. each day ill come to your house and put a tiny amount of arsenic in your tea, more and more each time until you finally die. that way you get to kill yourself without the yellow hands and bad breath, and i make millions. everybody wins

You know Commander, you could really do with reading this. Its a report by a psychologist on why people smoke. And believe it or not, it's not just because we are addicted to nicotine. It's very enlightening for non smokers. You might understand us a bit more.

I'm one of the few who actually quit smoking and stayed off them. Smoking is stupid.. Get through the first 2 weeks off of them and it's a bit of willpower here and there after it.

That report is from 1947, i think people these days are a lot more knowledgeable about the bad side to smoking.

Yes but the reasons behind it are still the same. We know how bad it is, I'm just trying to explain why we still smoke.

That report is a piss-take right?
Frequently, our respondents remarked that smoking cigaretees is like being with a friend. Said one, "When I lean back and light my cigarette and see the glow in the dark, I am not alone any more...."

I have skimmed through it and it is hilarious, like one of those "women belong in the home" things from the 50's, "know your place women"

Did anyone see Oprah today? They showed a lung of a smoker and of a non-smoker... needless to say, it was kinda gross!
I still sparked up when I got outside the door though!

"Some of the appeals of a lighted cigarette derive from the appeals of fire in general. Fire is the symbol of life, and the idea of fire is surrounded by much superstition. In this connection, it is interesting to note that traces of superstition can be seen in the smoking habits of modern man. For instance some people never will light three cigarettes on one match. It is said that this superstition is based on experiences during World War I."

Ah yes, what a great reason.....

I can picture Troy McLure reading that aloud :D

:D Quite the site. Not enlightening at all, just funny.

I dont smoke, never have and never will. I think its stupid and pointless and if a smoker ever comes with out and tries to justify it by saying "I like looking at the smoke" or "I like looking at the match lighting" or any other of those fairly pathetic excuses I'll just laugh at them.

Agreed...it's stupidity to smoke let alone support an arguement with a article from over 5 decades ago. It was in that time, that the cigarette companies began marketing cigarettes. There was a big spectacle made of cigarettes and how they were so 'cool', there was hardly any negativity towards them and no warnings.

Though the cigarette companies knew themselves that they were marketing an unethical product but this was kept quiet...why would they say anything bad? The money was rolling in and governments were blinded by short term high tax gains from cigarettes to just ban them completely, but long term they paid more for the medical expenses. People were in a frenzy to buy shares in these companies.

But it's all changed now, there is no excuse to be smoking, it's negative effects and risks are in your face. Imo It won't be too long before they are just eradicated, even tobacco companies know this. They invest their profits in other companies now instead of re-investing their profits because they know in the future, they will no longer get away with it.

To answer a few of those ingenius 'arguements' (lol) why smoking is good...
    Smoking is Fun
Yeah if you deem suicide fun...
    Smoking is a Reward
Sure, you pump money into smoking and in the end you get a lovely cancer package
    Smoking is Oral Pleasure
    Eh, oral cancer?...Oral diseases?
The Cigarette -- A Modern Hourglass
Yeah counting down to your grave...
    Smoking Helps Me Think
Does it really? I would have thought it killed brain cells..meh

    I could go on for ever...but i won't
    Morale of story, don't smoke
    /Rant over

I don't smoke, except passively. I've got more sense. It doesn't take a genius to work out that it is bad for you. After all, would you stick your head up a smokey chimney?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,129 ✭✭✭Nightwish

smoking is disgusting and I hate being around smokers. The smell and the smoke choking up the air is just horrible. The smoking ban was one of the few admirable things this Government has done for us.

Sneezing can't be helped...it's a natural reaction in your body

Drink doesn't kill brain cells, nerve cells yes

Oh and i know, us moral police will undoubtedly be ignored, at the end of the day it must come from the smoker to realize their stupidity

what the hell was that picture about? the guy was only trying to enlighten you to the negative aspects of smoking. All that pleasure that each cigarette gives you comes at a price, and I'm not talking money. You are damaging your body in uncountable ways. You are at risk from Cancer (14 times more likely to die from cancer) as each cigarette has at least 60 carcinogenic chemicals-arsenic, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde etc. You are also putting yourself at a significant risk of a stroke, emphysema (uncurable), high blood pressure. You are also twice as likely to die from a heart attack. So don't lash out in a childish immature way at people who are only trying to open your eyes to the reality of what you are doing to yourself
