I was always given to believe it stood for something along the lines of "Look at me, I have absolutely nothing worthwhile to contribute, so I'm just going to quote something funny someone else said and laugh at it! Look at me! Looook aaat MEEEEEEeeeeee..."
    lol

Everything is open to interpretation. Other people can take different meanings from things like acronyms all they like. That doesn't make them wrong (or right...)
It does make them wrong, since it actually stands for Laughing Out Loud. How can they be right if they clearly don't know the right answer? - that doesn't make sense.
Acroynms, by definition, stand for something - they're not just a casual reference of random letters open for interpretation. B.A. = Bachelor of Arts. If someone said "well, I interpreted B.A. as standing for 'Brown Ass', and Bard says I'm entitled to do that, so therefore you can't say I'm wrong"; does that make them right? Eh, no - because B.A. specifically stands for something else - what don't you understand about that concept? This isn't poetry - it's Black or White. You can't merely 'interpret' a clearly defined definition that 82/85 people on these forums seem to be able to grasp.

I don't know what your English teacher taught you, but acronyms have specific definitions. Hey, Bard - I interpret 'CIE' as meaning Clock In Egg - am I wrong? Not according to you...

    God.

Tempted as I am to call your intelligence into question with some witty yet scathingly insulting remark, I won't. Honest.

"LOL" isn't "officially" defined anywhere. There's nothing to say that if I interpret it as "Lovely Orange Lollipop", then I'm "wrong". I'm just different, that's all. Why can't you agree to disagree?
Acroynms, by definition, stand for something - they're not just a casual reference of random letters open for interpretation.

Actually, they can quite easily be both. Your own example, for example, is flawed.

B.A., as someone also pointed out, can be taken to mean "Bad-ass" - as in "B.A. Baracus". There was a time when WWF stood for both "World Wrestling Federation" and "World Wildlife Fund". NRA stands for both the "National Rifle Association" in America and "No Rest Allowed" in fitness clubs. I could go on. I won't.
    - what don't you understand about that concept? This isn't poetry - it's Black or White.

No need to call my intelligence into question here. There's nothing I "don't understand" about your "concept" - I just don't agree with it. That is allowed, you know :)

Of course I can, it's called "disagreeing".
I don't know what your English teacher taught you, but acronyms have specific definitions.

My English teacher taught me that English is a very versatile language and many words and phrases (and yes, acronyms) can be interpreted by many people in many different ways. It's one of the things about the language that makes it so interesting, - and difficult to learn for a non-native speaker.

    And he was right too.
Hey, Bard - I interpret 'CIE' as meaning Clock In Egg - am I wrong? Not according to you...

    Correct. Thanks for playing :)

When I first got the internet I thought it meant lots of laughs. I dont know did someone tell me or did I just assume it. I know it actually stands for Laughing out Load but still everytime I see it and the odd time I use it I always read it as Lots of Laughs.

It is definitely Laugh Out Loud.

whenever I type "lol" i'm only laughing out loud about 2.3454% of the time, the other 96.8674% of the time it's just to fill in a gap in a conversation, the reason I do it the other 0.7872% of the time does not compute, maybe it's just a habit....

76.89423% of statistics are made up on the spot.

I see it as one of those annoying things that people use because they wouldn't just spell out properly what they want to say. Hate all them internet shorten down yokes.

I always felt the end of the internet would be heralded by a thread like this.

Oh look, the Free Online Dictionary of Computing defines LOL as:
<chat> "laughing out loud", or "lots of love" or "luck".

OMG, it has more than one potential meaning!

    *falls over in shock*
