    I see it as Laugh out loud, but when I use it i only mean it as if I was just grinning, or smerking.

    I see pain and death and suffering. Then again I am a bit messed up.

    I don't think there's a choice in the matter, it means laugh out loud. That's what it's always meant.

    ffs.

    hate to completely ruin your poll but OF COURSE it's Laugh Out Loud?! Unless you're my mother...then it means lots of eh...love and stuff...

    LOL is a complement, meaning "Lord Of Leetness"... so if you're browsing the computer forums and you see someone has solved a really tricky problem, you can quote the person who solved the problem and post - "LOL <username>" as a mark of respect.

    Lots of Love.. they aren't laughing at me, they are just saying they love me. *cries*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,699 ✭✭✭Da Bounca

    I agree with shrimp.
    Although it literally means laugh out loud, I have never witnessed someone actually laughing aloud while typing it. I think it is more of a grunt of amusement type of thing.
    I think rofl is more of a lol thing literally.

    That made sense in my head, but now that i read it i'm not too sure...

    ifFall==true
    {
       donkeyStyle \o/.helpGetUp();
       donkeyStyle \o/.brushDown();
    }

    I see lol as a sort of a chortle... never use it though, i prefer "ha ha"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,977 ✭✭✭mp3guy

    laugh out loud, i never use it though, it seems too american-teenage-anime-gamer-leet to me. A friend of mine used to think it ment lord oh lord, i don't know why, but back in 2001, he would say things like "omg, the twin towers were attacked, LOL!"

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,851 ✭✭✭PurpleFistMixer

    I tend to imagine someone chuckling quietly while their head lolls back on their neck, in a somewhat zombie-like fashion.
    That or a twelve-year-old kid twittering nervously as they place that damn acronym at the end of EVERY SENTENCE THEY WRITE.

    Ahem.

    But Bardman, it's not up for interpretation - it stands for Laughing Out Loud. Simple as that - as can be seen from the poll results. The OP was just wrong.

    When I'm doing some work in the garden, LOL means "lots of leaves".
    True story.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 432 ✭✭Daelus

    I was told, years ago, that it stood for 'Lots of Laughter', so that's what I read it as, even though I know it's actually 'Laugh Out Loud'. Although I do agree, a lot of people seem to type it at the end of every sentence.

    "My name is John, LOL!"
    "I am 14 years old, LOL!"
    "My hamster just died... LOL!"
    "I have to go have dinner, LOL!"
    :rolleyes:

    I was always given to believe it stood for something along the lines of "Look at me, I have absolutely nothing worthwhile to contribute, so I'm just going to quote something funny someone else said and laugh at it! Look at me! Looook aaat MEEEEEEeeeeee..."

    Everything is open to interpretation. Other people can take different meanings from things like acronyms all they like. That doesn't make them wrong (or right...)

    It does make them wrong, since it actually stands for Laughing Out Loud. How can they be right if they clearly don't know the right answer? - that doesn't make sense.
    Acroynms, by definition, stand for something - they're not just a casual reference of random letters open for interpretation. B.A. = Bachelor of Arts. If someone said "well, I interpreted B.A. as standing for 'Brown Ass', and Bard says I'm entitled to do that, so therefore you can't say I'm wrong"; does that make them right? Eh, no - because B.A. specifically stands for something else - what don't you understand about that concept? This isn't poetry - it's Black or White. You can't merely 'interpret' a clearly defined definition that 82/85 people on these forums seem to be able to grasp.

    I don't know what your English teacher taught you, but acronyms have specific definitions. Hey, Bard - I interpret 'CIE' as meaning Clock In Egg - am I wrong? Not according to you...

    God.

    Tempted as I am to call your intelligence into question with some witty yet scathingly insulting remark, I won't. Honest.

    "LOL" isn't "officially" defined anywhere. There's nothing to say that if I interpret it as "Lovely Orange Lollipop", then I'm "wrong". I'm just different, that's all. Why can't you agree to disagree?
    Acroynms, by definition, stand for something - they're not just a casual reference of random letters open for interpretation.

    Actually, they can quite easily be both. Your own example, for example, is flawed.
    B.A. = Bachelor of Arts. If someone said "well, I interpreted B.A. as standing for 'Brown Ass', and Bard says I'm entitled to do that, so therefore you can't say I'm wrong"; does that make them right? Eh, no - because B.A. specifically stands for something else

    B.A., as someone also pointed out, can be taken to mean "Bad-ass" - as in "B.A. Baracus". There was a time when WWF stood for both "World Wrestling Federation" and "World Wildlife Fund". NRA stands for both the "National Rifle Association" in America and "No Rest Allowed" in fitness clubs. I could go on. I won't.
    - what don't you understand about that concept? This isn't poetry - it's Black or White.

    No need to call my intelligence into question here. There's nothing I "don't understand" about your "concept" - I just don't agree with it. That is allowed, you know :)
    You can't merely 'interpret' a clearly defined definition that 82/85 people on these forums seem to be able to grasp.

    Of course I can, it's called "disagreeing".
    I don't know what your English teacher taught you, but acronyms have specific definitions.

    My English teacher taught me that English is a very versatile language and many words and phrases (and yes, acronyms) can be interpreted by many people in many different ways. It's one of the things about the language that makes it so interesting, - and difficult to learn for a non-native speaker.

    And he was right too.
    Hey, Bard - I interpret 'CIE' as meaning Clock In Egg - am I wrong? Not according to you...

    Correct. Thanks for playing :)

    When I first got the internet I thought it meant lots of laughs. I dont know did someone tell me or did I just assume it. I know it actually stands for Laughing out Load but still everytime I see it and the odd time I use it I always read it as Lots of Laughs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Flukey

    whenever I type "lol" i'm only laughing out loud about 2.3454% of the time, the other 96.8674% of the time it's just to fill in a gap in a conversation, the reason I do it the other 0.7872% of the time does not compute, maybe it's just a habit....

    76.89423% of statistics are made up on the spot.
