A song that used to tug at my heartstings was Ireland - Gareth brooks.

this is while i was living in Finland.... always made me think of all the things
    i couldn't take with me.

While i was waiting for my plane home to Ireland it came on the radio ... and i just had a big stupid grin on my face all the way home . =)

40 Fields of Green, was my Granddad's fav song ,and my granny's.

Wooden Jesus - Temple of the dog , remindes me of a girl i used to work with who took her own life :(

breakup songs are a little different ;P

The Green Fields of France, I only seem to cry when I sing that, not when it's on the radio.

Yes, Pink Flyod - High Hopes forgot about that one, just read the lyrics... think about the division bell reference in line 4... and then think of people you knew when you were younger.

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the long road and on down the causeway
Do they still meet there by the cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before time took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay

    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    With friends surrounded
    The nights of wonder

Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world

    ****

Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
    There's a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
though down this road we've been so many times

    The grass was greener
    The light was brighter
    The taste was sweeter
    The nights of wonder
    With friends surrounded
    The dawn mist glowing
    The water flowing
    The endless river

and another song that references people we once knew:

Neil Young - One of these days

Didn't notice what a great song this was until I read the lyrics:

    One of these days,
I’m gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I’ve known
    And I’m gonna try
And thank them all for the good times together.
    Though so apart we’ve grown.

    One of these days,
I’m gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I’ve known
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won’t be long, it won’t be long.

    And I’m gonna thank,
    That old country fiddler
    And all those rough boys
Who play that rock ’n’ roll
I never tried to burn any bridges
Though I know I let some good things go.

    One of these days,
I’m gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I’ve known
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won’t be long, it won’t be long.

    From down in l.a.
    All the way to nashville,
    From new york city
    To my canadian prairie home
    My friends are scattered
Like leaves from an old maple.
Some are weak, some are strong.

    One of these days,
I’m gonna sit down and write a long letter
To all the good friends I’ve known
One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won’t be long, it won’t be long.

One of these days, one of these days, one of these days,
And it won’t be long, it won’t be long.

I used to cry to Elvis' version of Old Shep. I don't anymore, but it's a real sad song.

I have this problem though, when I come in after a night on the booze, I'll put on some Elvis music and if it's an emotional song, chances are I'll start crying. It's the combination of his beautiful voice, the power of the song, and the tragic end to someone so young...

The song "If I can Dream" is a good example, or "Peace in the Valley".

    Kevin.

Absolutley agree. This is one of my favourite songs and my dad always sings it. I have never cried listening to song but this one would get you close.

Also Raglan Road when sung by Luke Kelly. Fantastic song

I'd more get shivers than would be upset/cry at a song.

But 2 that stir me are "The living years" (Mike and the Mechanics) and "Over the rainbow" (The "Finding Forrester" version at the end of the film)

Written by Prince but I'm not 100% sure if he ever sang it.

Yeah I agree L. Cohen original version I always thought was better and seeing as it is coverd so much Jeff Buckley's version doesn't seem that great IMHO. Bono does a really great version in a re-invetion way.

"Sailing" Rod Stewart gets me because my dad has it on his grave and it's actually is about dying.

Yeah, but I didn't think he sang it, I thought it was written for SO'c.

But I don't think that makes it a cover.

It was written and sung by prince as a B-side on one of his singles. Rosie Gaines sang on the song also

Come on lads Broken Heart by Spiritualized is surely Top of The Sobs.
    And a 1 a 2 a 1 2 3 4

Though I have a broken dream
I’m too busy to be dreaming of you
There’s a lot of things that I gotta do
Lord I have a broken dream

And I’m wasted all the time
I’ve gotta drink you right off of my mind
I’ve been told that this will heal given time
Lord I have a broken heart

And I’m crying all the time
I have to keep it covered up with a smile
And I’ll keep on moving on for a while
Lord I have a broken heart

    :(:(:(:(:(:(:(
Gotta go think something just caught in my eye
