    Let it just be known that I was fully aware that technically, I was leaving the box in a place that it probably shouldnt have gone. However, given the circumstances and the seemingly "ok" compensation for "littering"...ie, leaving it in a place of refuse collection, be it not that specific type of refuse, I thought my actions were not in the least bit deserving of a €125 fine.

    Yes I agree that actions need to be taken to ensure our country is more pleasing to the eye. But as other posters have illustrated, our littering laws seem to be fairly messed up. If Gardai cant be arsed to interfere when a passer by is littering, or the blame is put on someone whos car was robbed, for the place being covered in flyers, then who is to say what should be punished on what shouldnt be?

    Saying things like why didnt I bring a bigger bag etc if I knew Dublin has a lack of bins is a bit mad to be honest. I knew the laptop would come in a box, and I knew I would be able to fit the items in my bad. What I didnt know is that I would not be able to find a bin after cycling for ages looking for one. Someone who is familiar with the area has confirmed that there is a serious lack of bins in that area, even more so than normal. Why didnt I take a bus or a taxi? Is that really relevant? If you must know, I fancied the cycle.

    Actually, that leads me on to another point. I find it ironic that you are trying to discourage me from cycling, but at the same time slandering me for doing harm to the environment? By cycling, I am making the journey in a much more environmentally-friendly way. I cycle nearly all the time and only take other forms of transport when I have to.

    Finally let me say one more time that I do not think littering is an easily excusable thing. I can understand why a lot of your reactions would be a plain view of "you littered, so you should pay the price". Thats fair enough. But in some circumstances, things are not as straightforward as that. If I had intentionally been so willy-nilly as some of you are making me out to be, I would have dumped the box long before I found that bottle bank.

    And another thing, ADUB?, you should watch your manners.

    Its unfortunate as you say you normally don't litter and this one time you got caught out. But they can't bend the rules for you. And yeah it is sh*te that so many a'holes that litter all the time never get caught!! But that's life.

    This country really needs to take action about its waste situation and enviromental issues full stop but yeah I don't see that happening anytime soon!!

    If you were collecting the lap top from a retailer that wasn't a member of Repak they'd be obliged to take back the packaging from you for recycling.

    Retailers that are members are listed on www.repak.ie.

    Just pay the fine, dont do it again and get on with your life...you will only go making things worse as you dont have a leg to stand on.

    Didn't you know cormie *is* above the law? He can stop in traffic to pick up passengers, and remove his L-plates for motorway driving. The law is for other people!

    If the OP cycled around for ages looking for a bin, how did it suddenly become dangerous to continue cycling?

    I wasn't saying to use that as defense. That was just in reference to the whole "fruit in a hedge is litter" discussion. That's what I disagree with.

    I don't have the same view with un natural products such as foam packaging and what not. If I saw someone throw an apply in a garden, I'd have no problem, even if it was my garden, if I saw someone throw a plastic bottle or similar It would be a different story.

    I don't know where I portrayed that I was above the law either?

    If my job was to fine people for littering, I would have sympathy for Cian if I saw this thread after I fined him. Whoever fined him probably just thought it was someone in a car who, once they got their bottles out of the car, wanted nothing more of such filth in it and left the box there when they could have easily have brought it back home in their car.

    And Esel, with regards the passengers, if you followed that thread, I changed my wicked ways and picked him up in a more suitable place from that point on and the L plates are gone now anyway;)

    I think people are goin a bit hard on the op.

    Sure the law is the law etc. etc.

    But give him a ****ing break. 125 euro is pretty steep for a box, he said he looked around for a bin and couldnt find one. Being on the bike im sure the box would have been very combersome too.

    Hard luck mate, id be pretty pissed off if this happened to me.

    There are worse crimes people get away with, and don't get fined over.

    What about the thread in motors on the lad with no licence or insurance who was paralised and now is looking 2mil in compo.

    Err he is one of those "a'holes that litter"!
    I dont usually kill people, but this one guy was really annoying me last night so I stabbed him in the head. Now they want me to pay a fine and are calling me a murderer!

    Yes dog faeces is litter. You seem to think that natural = good. All animals (including humans) have things they consider waste. For very good reason too.

    I can't see why there's any argument or debate about this. You left an empty box at the side of the road which was littering, end of story. The background of if does't matter to anyone, least of all a judge, he'll just see it as inexcusable.

    There's a bottle bank near me where lots of Cianos seem to think it's ok to leave behind their empy boxes and bags they used to bring the bottles down and by the end of the week the place is a tip. The county council then have to send someone up to clear the place.

    Anyway, yep, we consider it waste as our systems can't benefit from it, but other things benefit from it. Think of cow manure. The nature cycle. Sure, some natural things hinder others, but it's not natural for a dog to hop up onto the railing along the promenade in Bray and open the dog litter bin with it's nose and do it's business looking out amongst the sea. Would be handy but it's not the way nature intended it to happen.

    Anyway, this really has nothing to do with cardboard boxes. This was all just in reference to the throwing an apple in a ditch = litter thing.

    You have a very warped sence of logic about what the environment is.
    You seem to think that natural = ok
    Oil occurs naturally.......

    Wow, hold it, I don't think it's ok. I said if I was in charge of handing out the fines I would have some kind of sympathy for giving the same to Cian as I would to someone who decides to leave a box there when they can just put it in the back seat, where it was when they brought their bottles down in the box, bring it back home and put it in their recycling bin.

    And if there were a million Cians doing it? Well then I'd get onto my boss and sort out putting a bank for cardboard and the likes there since there is obviously a lack in that area.

    I'm surprised you are posting here. It's not natural you know so it can't be good. Do you live in a house?

    To the OP. Tough break , pay your fine. The judge won't care why you did it only that you did do it.

Ok here goes, by sacrificing me living in this house and being online, I am eughh... protecting the environment by posting threads like this, this and this (and... this:p)which will hopefully have a positive effect after I emailed Oxigen etc, I can then go an preach the word and get people recycling more which will work against the damage done to the environment by me living here and being online. So It's for the greater good really:p :D
