Aww :( Guys with eyeliner are hot. How do you dress now?

Since we're on the subject of goths, I don't like when people(usually internet-Goths) "hang up the fishnets", so to speak, not because, unlike some valid scenarios they no longer suit them, but as part of some kind of "calming down", and claim they're still really different on the inside. I've seen far too many goths like that online, who are really just stuck up bastards. I've gotten assaulted for having punkish ideals of "you know, maybe if you actually took a stance on something" - "Shut up! You can't do that when you have three wives, twelve kids and a mortage on a golden toilet!" "You have that?" "I intend to!"

This, lately, has made me loose all faith in the human race. Corporate goths/punks are just ultimately the greatest social retard possible. Fair enough, you have to work, you have to earn money, wow, so does nearly everyone, but that doesn't mean you have to act like a stuck up twat to anyone who dare suggest that some things like the right to express yourself (to a decent degree of course) are worth fighting for.

I'm serious, but this really does depress me. This is what makes me think life really isn't ****ing worth living, when nobody gives a rats ass about individuality anymore, rebellion is oh so 1960s and out of date. People keep claiming to be really the same person they were, they've just "calmed down" in how they act, how the hell is that even possible?

It's a whole load of bull****. I'll be dying my hair bright red for as long as I see fit. If it's trouble getting a job, **** it, I'll wear a black wig for the interview, or a really temporary colour to calm it down. Why doesn't anyone ever think of that? No I HAVE to cut and dye my hair now to get a job. The most I'm doing is letting it fade. I see no reason to "Calm down". I see no reason to , and pretend like the outside doesn't matter. Of course there are times when the oustide matters. JUDGING someone on their looks is shallow, but using them to express yourself is anything but. Your looks don't necessarily mean you're one way or the other, but if you claim to be anti-conformist and don't bother fighting for your right not to conform because you don't *need* to dress differently, you're a useless hypocrite.

Public relations jobs, where you have to have a certain image. It's somewhat understandable then, but at the same time, it's very elitist to "moderate" it. Dress code is fine, but if you're forcing things like hair colour, that's more permanent. Really, everyone's seen it before. If you tie it back, you can still look professional with pink or purple hair. If you gel it down, it darkens it so it has a less intense look. Or again, worse comes to worse, wear a wig.
It amazes me how judgemental employers are with things like that. People don't consider little things like that important enough to fight for. This bemuses me.
If someone is qualified, they're qualified. If they have a crazy appearance, chances are, they're a strong, independant, motivated individual. Too much prejudice.

Things this big have to be introduced gradually... which seems to be an excuse for people to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL.

These are very often the people that end up being mods on goth messageboards and IRC channels, and punish people for being so "Immature" as to disagree with them.

It's pathetic. Somethings are more important in life than money and mainstream acceptance. I've seen the same thing from supposed "Punks" and "Wilboy" guitarists, and just supposed "individuals" and "free thinkers" in general. A keyboardist guy I know cut off his long hair JUST FOR THE SAKE OF BEING MORE CORPORATE. He already HAD his job. Of course, he's happy where he is, blah blah blah, it's pretty obvious he missed the "Old" days.
I'm tired of that kind of thing.
I'm beginning to think I'm crazy now, because nobody ever seems to agree with me on this, even though it's plainly blatant. I think it's just people are too scared to do any different, or to grasp what they're becoming. So they just keep telling themselves otherwise.

The worst case I've seen were some capitalist worshipping transsexuals who believe that employers should have every right not to hire transsexuals because it's not profitable, and that if the US had strong unions and workers rights like in the EU, it would be very bad indeed. That's insane. It's almost like a cult, or fundie christianity, you must worship the god and sacrifice for the "greater good".
I hate to discriminate myself, but bloody yanks.

I just wish "inidividual" people, for once, would say "Hey, maybe I SHOULD take a stance for this." When will they learn that things HAPPEN gradually, but are done SUDDENLY? Gradually doesn't happen by "Slowly" introducing little bits and pieces you'll never expand upon. It happens by real people working hard for something that MATTERS, or even just taking a single stance. DOING something.

In the 60s, if you did, you were cool, you helped make progession. If you do something today, you're a ****ing whiner. Everything's whining. You have a problem, it's whining. What a wonderful way for the world to protect itself, to demean anyone that disagrees with it as somehow an irritance. It reminds me of the kind of practice religious extemists use to denounce anyone different to them.

Sorry for the rant, I just know a lot of very pathetic people. IRC goths generally aren't very nice or interesting people. Well, that's IRC for you I guess.

Yeah, im a gay, wiccan, goth who uses an electric wheelchair, smokes and has regular sex with my bf of 6 years, nevermind being "out" since the age of 10.......
I guess that passes for "fitting in", or "hanging up the fishnets" in your opinion. Maybe, just maybe you might like to think about how quickly *you* jump to conclusions? ;)

No, that's exactly what nobody needs to do. Nobody is going to speak out against it.

It wasn't directed at you, except maybe as a warning. re-read :)

"i think i'm old and i'm in pain" you said
"and it's all running out like it's the end of the
world" you said "and it's so cold it's like the
cold if you were dead" and then you smiled for
    a second."

Nah, warnings & orders never did sit well with me " :) "

    Nitey nite

'Speak out' against what exactly? I thought this thread was about goths and how they abandon the lifestyle once they hit a certain age? That's what I'm replying to. And yes, in that regard you do need to stop worrying about it; you may very well feel the same way when you're in your mid/late 20's.

If, in fact, the thread isn't about any of that, I'll ask again: what issues in particular are you speaking out against?

heh...sorry, ive got a 'weird coloured hair' fetish..lol
but eh yeah, on topic, ive had a few people say i seemed kinda goth, i dont dress goth at all tho, i just like some of the music, (joy division are one of my all time greatest bands). I think dresing a particular way like the temple bar kiddies do to fit in with an image is just sad, i can listen to goth music and not have to wear a trench coat, eyeliner, or new rocks (tho i do have a pair of them :D ). When you do dress up youre just helping people put a label on you, i prefer to dress how i want to, not how other people do so i can fit in with them

That is mascara dear you are thinking of not eyeliner.

Peoples lives to move on and really goth atire takes too long,
once you have kids never mind them never having most things in a decent size
and velvet and black and kids stickie fingers dont mix.
But the atitude and how you view the world never changes.

Yes mere reminants of what was the scene have mutated
and it is far to darkwave for my personal liking
and there are so many kids that dont even know
who the hell Suixie and the Banshees are,
as well as those in the scene who didnt die young
now dispair of listening to the same stuff that the did 10 years ago  .
So much for timeless, endless and eternal for that lot.

    Ahem, Siouxsie.

And then we have people talking about The Cure as "real" goth. They were never goth, they were cousins so to speak, the fandom overlapped and they were an influence, but not goth.

And Goth girls are usually quite pretty. They're often actually a little chubbier as they don't obsess over having a stick thin figure like some people do, but they're generally all shapes and sizes.

Sorry if it seems like I'm following you around boards but good god i can't help but reply to your utter stupidity!

Now unless you can find some scientific evidence that prove gothic music attracts "pretty people" what you just said is utter bull$hit

    People are pretty
    People are ugly
    People are Chubby
    People are stick insects

Although I usually find the goth look suits most girls it can't change how pretty they are! I can't believe you posted that!

I hate this kind of attitude. "It's just a phase, dear". The only thing that makes it a phase is people constantly saying "You'll grow out of it". I see no practical reason to grow out of it. You can be creative with your appearance with minimal effort. And that's only the *dress* side of it, not just how people act, which I've noticed in quite a few older specimens gets thrown out the window with time. No more quirky humorous lovable personality for me, I've got mouths to feed!

I'm sorry, but it's stupid. And I doubt I will grow out of it, as others my age just seem to "accept" it and not say anything much about it. I am a very individual person, and will continue to reflect that in both looks in personality for as long as I live. Of course you'll tell me I'll grow out of it, because people want to make the young 'uns paranoid enough *to* grow out of it. No. I reject any such statements. This isn't even about being a "goth" even, but preserving my own personal style which is a little outlandish for most people's tastes. I won't grow out of it just because I'm told I will. There's plenty of things I was told I'd grow out of when I was younger, and I didn't. I can't tell how I'll feel in 10 years times, but at the same time, I know myself, and the things that are true to what I want to be. And looking like a plain jane isn't one of them.

And my computer was ****ed up and stuff that's quoted isn't the final edit as it's not what I meant at all so I editted it out, but my comptuer was going very slow so I couldn't edit it in time.

That didn't just miss the point entirely, it's so far away from the point it's hard to believe the point ever existed.

And it was pretty dumb too. I hate people that try to turn someone's views into nothing more than OMG WTF!?1 Somehow, you fail to come off as the more mature party.

She said "proper goths". Or as someone I know recently put it, "in my day Goth was all cheap snakebite and nasty speed. It all seems to have changed since, and I don't really understand it anymore."

In our day we had proper Goths called cureheads and we also had the grove which was full of rockers, cureheads and punks, and the hoodies use to wait outside for a good fight. I don't know what it's like for the nu Ireland generation but we had very different and distinct social grouping.

We don't seem to have different groups of young people anymore, all we seem to have these days are young consumers.
