Goths in Ireland...?

I'm amazed at how few goths there are in Ireland, at least real ones and not Mansonites and Korn Kiddies.

There's plenty in England. I personally know about 3 or 4 "proper" goths, at most. I've seen a couple in Cork when I was down there, and the odd one in Dublin, but you can't always tell by looks.

It's rather annoying, as NOBODY knows a large portion of the music I'm into. It's a bitch. I'd love to have someone to talk about especially because I can't really much with my bandmate, he doesn't appreciate that kind of thing.

I think in general in Ireland we have very few interesting diversities compared to what I've seen in other countries... oh well :/

have you been to central bank recently?

so what music do you listen to? Bauhaus? Paradise Lost? Sisters of Mercy?

Im only 22 so I usually get lumped into being stereotyped a Mansonite kid for the way I dress, but Ive been called a goth for over 10 years.
anyway its not really about the music you listen to which can cause a person to be termed a goth. Gothicism is a whole outlook a person has- a fascination with darkness, as in the dark side of everything, death, victorian arts, romanticism, horror, etc etc

I wouldn't call you a mansonite by far if you know who Bauhaus and SoM are. Despite your slightly plain "Black" outlook on fashion, I had a feeling from your reasonable amount of intelligence there was more to you than "Nu Goth".

I'm 19 and I'm into an arcane mix of Alternative Rock(Pumpkins, Muse), Goth(Faith and the Muse, Bauhaus, Switchblade Symphony), Metal(the usual), and a little Prog(Pink Floyd, the Yes, Dream Theater).

Im called a goth just because of my hair or eyemake up. I love rap music and Im bubbly so Im not really a goth... just labelled

Well, plenty of goths are bubbly... most real goths aren't just woe-is-me folks and if they are they probably have a reason.

Forget about how people look. Most people who dress in the Goth style in Cork will know nothing about real Gothic music whilst some people who wear more colourful stuff might.

I was in Manchester a few weeks ago and there were a lot there. There was also a punk exhibition in a public building there, and there was a big congregation of goths and punks outside it. You don't see so many here. A lot of them look terrible or ridiculous. It is often a pity as some of the female goths are not bad looking, and would look even better if they would remove all that dark makeup. Still, it is their own choice and if that is the way they want to look, then that is what they will and can do.

That culture of sub groups of people with similar styles of dress and taste in music seems to more engrained in English culture than over here. After all, England is where Goths, Punks, Mods etc were born so it's not surprising that there are more representatives of such groups over there.

I really am against the whole "Depression" from Gothism but i have many friends who are into those bands who i wouldn't consider to be goths, they don't dress "noir" but love "that" music...

(Only problem i have is that i hate the music...I find it to be just pointless roaring...I am wrong in many cases but any so called goths i've chatted too love that scene.)

I used to go out to Dominion when I was in dublin the odd time, but these days I've drifted quite far from the whole goth scene. I still dig the Fields Of The Nephilim mind you.

Im not a goth, but I went out with a guy for two years who was. From my experience goths make good boyfriends :) he was kind, accepting and very caring [which are now qualities I attribute to goths :p]

He was welsh, tho so that might not count in this thread! Hmmm :D

I'm talking about real goth music.

And by real goths I mean goths that at least somewhat follow the original scene that was called "Goth", being into the Cure and Joy Division and bands like that at least.

I don't know many goth bands that "roar", though I guess Peter Murphy did have the odd fit. I think you're mistaking it for death metal, or something.

I used to think that goths would listen to lots of that stuff, but then common sense kicked in and I thought they must listen to something else. Goth can be quite a fragile, frilly, beautiful thing, it doesn't really fit in well with a lot of death metal imagery.

I'm mainly looking for people with similiar taste in music. Though I find my favourite band (Switchblade Symphony) aren't so liked by a lot of the goths online, which is a shame. It's hard to find someone that really loves them.

And Goth girls are usually quite pretty. They're often actually a little chubbier as they don't obsess over having a stick thin figure like some people do, but they're generally all shapes and sizes.

Goth is a pretty broad thing, really, but it still does follow from the actualy scene or music. There are very few goths true to the original sense.

Many of the "goths" you see nowadays are goths in the same way that Good Charlotte fans are Punks.

They often suck at choice of makeup and dress rather crappily, you'll get one or two who actually bought a decent dress or other such decent outfit and the rest are in baggy pants and slipknot hoodies.

What is your ideal of a good looking bird, then?

I find too many people look too much the same. Even if you're going along an existing style, it's still one that offers a bit more creativity than "normal"....

    I love this.....

In my day (god i feel old), it was all about bands like, the cure, pixies, bahaus, pumpkins, Sisters of mercy, virgin prunes etc etc, all stuff i still listen to.

Im 28 now (shudder) and the only way iv changed in that regard is eyeliner, pancake, black nailpolish etc, dont look as good on me so i stopped wearing them.

(This is a guy who spent a good few years while living in UK, mainly socialising with bob an mary, sim etc btw lol) ;)

no, the comment does exactly what it says on the tin. In my experience goths are very similar to nerdy types...except they wear makeup. Aot of nerds even listen to that type of music.

    Wooooooooooaahhhhhhhh we fade to grey.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,511 ✭✭✭Rozie

Aww :( Guys with eyeliner are hot. How do you dress now?

Since we're on the subject of goths, I don't like when people(usually internet-Goths) "hang up the fishnets", so to speak, not because, unlike some valid scenarios they no longer suit them, but as part of some kind of "calming down", and claim they're still really different on the inside. I've seen far too many goths like that online, who are really just stuck up bastards. I've gotten assaulted for having punkish ideals of "you know, maybe if you actually took a stance on something" - "Shut up! You can't do that when you have three wives, twelve kids and a mortage on a golden toilet!" "You have that?" "I intend to!"

This, lately, has made me loose all faith in the human race. Corporate goths/punks are just ultimately the greatest social retard possible. Fair enough, you have to work, you have to earn money, wow, so does nearly everyone, but that doesn't mean you have to act like a stuck up twat to anyone who dare suggest that some things like the right to express yourself (to a decent degree of course) are worth fighting for.

I'm serious, but this really does depress me. This is what makes me think life really isn't ****ing worth living, when nobody gives a rats ass about individuality anymore, rebellion is oh so 1960s and out of date. People keep claiming to be really the same person they were, they've just "calmed down" in how they act, how the hell is that even possible?

It's a whole load of bull****. I'll be dying my hair bright red for as long as I see fit. If it's trouble getting a job, **** it, I'll wear a black wig for the interview, or a really temporary colour to calm it down. Why doesn't anyone ever think of that? No I HAVE to cut and dye my hair now to get a job. The most I'm doing is letting it fade. I see no reason to "Calm down". I see no reason to , and pretend like the outside doesn't matter. Of course there are times when the oustide matters. JUDGING someone on their looks is shallow, but using them to express yourself is anything but. Your looks don't necessarily mean you're one way or the other, but if you claim to be anti-conformist and don't bother fighting for your right not to conform because you don't *need* to dress differently, you're a useless hypocrite.

Public relations jobs, where you have to have a certain image. It's somewhat understandable then, but at the same time, it's very elitist to "moderate" it. Dress code is fine, but if you're forcing things like hair colour, that's more permanent. Really, everyone's seen it before. If you tie it back, you can still look professional with pink or purple hair. If you gel it down, it darkens it so it has a less intense look. Or again, worse comes to worse, wear a wig.
It amazes me how judgemental employers are with things like that. People don't consider little things like that important enough to fight for. This bemuses me.
If someone is qualified, they're qualified. If they have a crazy appearance, chances are, they're a strong, independant, motivated individual. Too much prejudice.

Things this big have to be introduced gradually... which seems to be an excuse for people to do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL.

These are very often the people that end up being mods on goth messageboards and IRC channels, and punish people for being so "Immature" as to disagree with them.

It's pathetic. Somethings are more important in life than money and mainstream acceptance. I've seen the same thing from supposed "Punks" and "Wilboy" guitarists, and just supposed "individuals" and "free thinkers" in general. A keyboardist guy I know cut off his long hair JUST FOR THE SAKE OF BEING MORE CORPORATE. He already HAD his job. Of course, he's happy where he is, blah blah blah, it's pretty obvious he missed the "Old" days.
I'm tired of that kind of thing.
I'm beginning to think I'm crazy now, because nobody ever seems to agree with me on this, even though it's plainly blatant. I think it's just people are too scared to do any different, or to grasp what they're becoming. So they just keep telling themselves otherwise.

The worst case I've seen were some capitalist worshipping transsexuals who believe that employers should have every right not to hire transsexuals because it's not profitable, and that if the US had strong unions and workers rights like in the EU, it would be very bad indeed. That's insane. It's almost like a cult, or fundie christianity, you must worship the god and sacrifice for the "greater good".
I hate to discriminate myself, but bloody yanks.

I just wish "inidividual" people, for once, would say "Hey, maybe I SHOULD take a stance for this." When will they learn that things HAPPEN gradually, but are done SUDDENLY? Gradually doesn't happen by "Slowly" introducing little bits and pieces you'll never expand upon. It happens by real people working hard for something that MATTERS, or even just taking a single stance. DOING something.

In the 60s, if you did, you were cool, you helped make progession. If you do something today, you're a ****ing whiner. Everything's whining. You have a problem, it's whining. What a wonderful way for the world to protect itself, to demean anyone that disagrees with it as somehow an irritance. It reminds me of the kind of practice religious extemists use to denounce anyone different to them.

Sorry for the rant, I just know a lot of very pathetic people. IRC goths generally aren't very nice or interesting people. Well, that's IRC for you I guess.

Yeah, im a gay, wiccan, goth who uses an electric wheelchair, smokes and has regular sex with my bf of 6 years, nevermind being "out" since the age of 10.......
I guess that passes for "fitting in", or "hanging up the fishnets" in your opinion. Maybe, just maybe you might like to think about how quickly *you* jump to conclusions? ;)

'Speak out' against what exactly? I thought this thread was about goths and how they abandon the lifestyle once they hit a certain age? That's what I'm replying to. And yes, in that regard you do need to stop worrying about it; you may very well feel the same way when you're in your mid/late 20's.

If, in fact, the thread isn't about any of that, I'll ask again: what issues in particular are you speaking out against?

but eh yeah, on topic, ive had a few people say i seemed kinda goth, i dont dress goth at all tho, i just like some of the music, (joy division are one of my all time greatest bands). I think dresing a particular way like the temple bar kiddies do to fit in with an image is just sad, i can listen to goth music and not have to wear a trench coat, eyeliner, or new rocks (tho i do have a pair of them :D ). When you do dress up youre just helping people put a label on you, i prefer to dress how i want to, not how other people do so i can fit in with them

and velvet and black and kids stickie fingers dont mix.
But the atitude and how you view the world never changes.

Yes mere reminants of what was the scene have mutated

    Ahem, Siouxsie.

And then we have people talking about The Cure as "real" goth. They were never goth, they were cousins so to speak, the fandom overlapped and they were an influence, but not goth.
