Common sense??? Me??? The terrorists attacked britian for their involvement in Iraq, perhaps I wasnt aware of the tens of thousands of Irish troops stationed in Baghdad, my apologies.

I saw them, I work out beside their Air Corps HQ so perhaps I am used to their commings and goings, but there no more than usual from my experience.

Cant believe someone would panic at the sight of our own defence forces in action....

Well, it aint a daily sight or sound in the middle of the city and especially with what happened this morning, it is bound to raise a few eyebrows...
they were flying fairly low to the ground

    LOL Laughable,

    HE AIR CORPS MISSION

To contribute to the security of the State by providing for the Military Air Defence of its territorial integrity and to fulfill all roles assigned by Government through the deployment of a well motivated and effective Air Corps.

    INTRODUCTION

The Air Corps is the Air Component of the Defence Forces and it has its legal basis in Para 18 of the Defence acts 1954 to 1987. Since its was formed in 1922 is has undergone many changes structurally and technologically. It is partly due to the requirement to stay abreast of the new technologies in aircraft, but also due to the increasing range and diversity of missions which the Air Corps is tasked.

Im not saying it would make sense for anyone to attack Ireland & also I dont have a clue what type of planes they are. I (& others) heard an abnormally low flying small type of aircraft (REALLY low) more than once today. I thought the worse for a few seconds. I dont think its that much of a leap.

fair enough, you must be easily unnerved then

would you be willing to pay the huge amount of extra tax to pay for them?
ireland is well taken care of by countries in the EU that do have them i feel.
any country amassing weapons and aircraft probably needs them. i dont think we do.

What about Switzerland? the Irish Army recently bought Planes and armoured carriers from them.

why should other countries protect us? Because we are too lazy or unwilling to do it ourselves??

We dont have jets because the government dont feel the threat exists that we need them for. 9/11, todays bombing etc show that jets wouldnt help in any case. However if something does happen we cant start bitching and whining because our EU neighbours didnt look after us

remember that ireland is a constituent country of a united europe (which has the potential to be one of the world superpowers with regard to military capability and personnel) that work together maintain civilised social, economical and international relations. so thats almost like saying why would the USAF bother to defend one of its states under attack.

That is the type of point the Government bean counters make, but as has been said, it's not a very responsible one. You might even say it's lazy.

Sweden is a neutral, yet it manufactures it's own warplanes!

Austria, Portugal, Netherlands, Belgium all have modern airforces complete with modern fighters.

Even if cost was an issue, we could have bought some of the ex-Russian fighters/support planes left in the former USSR in the mid-90's for pittance which would have been modern and cheap.

mmmm interesting, I remember a big hissy begin thrown before the first Nice treaty vote because of fears that we would become part of an EU military block, hence the seville declaration after the first vote failed, part of which says "Ireland is not party to any mutual defence commitment" so why would they protect us????

It's not like you just pay for the planes, have them delivered and then fly about the place.
    There's also the cost of;
    training
    ground crew
    spare parts
    weapons systems
    upgrades

    etc etc.
We just would NEVER use them. Name one instance in the past 50 years of irish history where a fighter/interceptor/bomber would have neccessary?
All of the countries you've mentioned have been active in wars in the past, Ireland has not, nor will we be.
We are a neutral country therefore a fleet of modern jets is laughably unnecessary.

So we could have bought russian jets, what the hell would we be doing with them? Defense? Against who?

As we all knew but still quite moronic not to cancel the practice in light of the scare-mongering they'd cause.

I was on the phone with a client and he asked me if we were being attacked by fighter planes :D

He was german... I was very tempted to say "sh1t... its the germans" :D

Ha . Quality. What is it with this country? Terrorist Attack across the sea and out ( entire ) fighter airforce is doing low runs over the city? Wtf?Army Might as well Shout " RUN RUN THEY'R COMING " on Grafton Street. Then say. "HA GOT YA!!" . Idiotic country.

PS: Any terrorist wouldn't bother attacking this sh*t hole. Or perhaps the Lazy ones would. In any case it wouldnt matter.

Fianna Fail are staying one step of the terrorists. If they screw everything up ( M50, National Aquatic Center ect ect ) There is nothing for the terrorists to target or cause chaos. IT WOULDNT MAKE A LICK OF DIFFERENCE
