Wherever you are in life, read as much worthwhile books as possible. People will want to spend more time with you if you have interesting things to say.

Don't assume you'll be able to pay off college debts easily when you're in full time employment. As your income goes up, so too does your expenditure.

Live life to the fullest in college. You may never again have three months holidays and loads of free time during the week, exploit these while they're there and go see as much of the world as you can afford to.

In matters of love and sex be brave. You forget about the times you've been knocked back far quicker than you might think.

There is no such thing as perverted as long as both of you are adults and consenting.

A smile costs nothing but it can buy you a lot more than you might bargain for.

Sometimes, it's best to break up with someone even if you love them.

Value your friends and always try to stay in touch with them. Once you leave college it's incredibly easy to lose touch entirely.

Finally: opportunities rarely present themselves twice, take them the first time.

I agree. They are also less likely to annoy you about poor use of grammar if you read as MANY worthwhile books as possible. :D

    Concentrate on your studies.
unless you want to end up in some dead end job like me, that is.

It's a vicious cycle though... the late teen/early 20s years truely are the best of your life. seems like a shame to waste them studying :p

I wish I knew not to waste 5 important years of my life studying something that I've no intentions of working at just to have a degree.

I wish I never went to college and worked and saved instead so that I could have decided what I wanted to work at AFTER I'd put a few years thought into it.

Also I wish I knew that just because I can stay awake all night and go for periods with just alcohol and dancing to keep me going when I'm 20 ... it WILL catch up with me in years to come.

    Happy Birthday to the OP

*An Arts degree is a waste of time. An Arts Masters even more so. If you worked the 6 years it takes to complete this you would be earning way more money
*As someone said before - if you want to make money, find a company you can stand, and stick with it. The key to money is persistance. Your not going to make any money if you keep changing jobs
*Travel while you can - it gets harder at a later stage. Contrary to what other peopl say, *do* get into debt to do this if needed. You're going to die in debt anyway
    * Make the effort to stay in touch with your friends - after school/ college you will inevitably lose quite a few
    * If you're a bloke, hair doesn't last forever, and your belly is probably going to grow :(

    great thread... good read...

Its only when you actually read all those snippets of wisdom, being a senior citizen of nearly 25 years on this planet, that you realise a lot of things that you never actually thought about before...

    - I think i'll open a pension soon
    - WhiteWashMan is actually a fountain of wisdom

Best thread i think i've ever seen. As lame as it sounds (i'm 22), it's really made me sit up and take notice of a few things in my life.

I'm going to change my attitude, grow up, cheer up and enjoy myself while i can :)

    Thanks McGarnical.

I'm 20 myself so haven't a lot to offer! Don't smoke is one I have been told a lot though because you'll regret it when you're 50 and have lung cancer, heart disease, heart attacks, strokes, etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,382 ✭✭✭snorlax

    im a non smoker thankfully!:)

Don't fret too much if you feel you have problems with your life. Things change astonishingly (scarily?) quickly, and in all likelihood, your life in 10 years time will be worlds apart from your life now.

    Like Mahatma Gandhi said:

"Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.......Get a pension plan, and don't do drugs."

He was a very wise man.

Apart from the last bit. Drugs can enhance one's life if used rather than abused.

    Thanks for the advice people

Don't marry somebody you have lived with for less than 5 years, if you think divorce is ever an option simply do not get married.

If you are going to use drugs, research them and use them wisely, there are 100's of substances out their waiting for you. Don't waste your money on nicotine.

Don't worry to much about all this pension talk, but do save. A house or shares is as good a investment. A guy came to work selling pensions, in the end he admitted I shouldn't get one, after I had questioned the benefits. It can be worth getting a pension to avoid tax, in that case you can set it up to only put money in if it would otherwise be taxed at the higher rate.

    Salesmen lie.

Watch ads to see what new products are out there, then buy the cheaper unadvertised one, thats why it is cheaper.

Most beers are the same poor quality. Either get good import or cheap cans, avoid the carls/bud/hein. all you are paying for is fancy ads on TV every 2 mins.

The older you get the less scumbags/gardai bother you.

Don't go to college if you don't know what you want to do, or are doing arts "coz I got the points". The 3 people I know making the most money in their early 30's did crap in the leaving. Trades can pay VERY well.

If you are going to go to college research your course well.

    1. You will do most of the most important reading, film watching, before the age of 28.

    2. You will find it harder and harder to make the effort to make good friends as you get older, treasure the ones you have, nuture the relationships.

    3. Exercise you're in the best shape of your life right now, and you will find it easier to maintain that quality if you get into the routine right now.

    4. Chips are not the natural side dish of all meals.

    5. Confidence is the most attractive quality in another human being and the most desirable trait to have. But don't confuse confidence with arrogance. If you don't know the answer, don't pretend, there are no stupid questions.

    6. Standing down and waking away from a fight is the most sensible tactic, politness first. Ditto with police officers, nothing gets on their goat more than if you're being cheeky.

    7. Learn to cook. I'm not talking make your own foie gra, but learn the basics. It's cheaper and better than eating out, and it impresses the ladies. Just pick up the cook book and follow the instructions carefully. Plus theres something very statisfying to sitting down to a roast with all the trimmings you made yourself.

I'm 20 now, and here are some of the things I wish I knew...

    1. Why people their late 20s believe they're 'getting old'?
    2. Why it's so funny when I start a sentence with "when I was younger."?
    3. What the hell is up with foie gra?
    4. Why does debt just seem more acceptable after age 25?
    5. At what age do women lower there standards?
    6. What exactly is it that 'I dont get' about The Smiths.?
    7. What the hell was I thinking when I was 16?
    8. Why did I ever drink cider?
    9. What the hell is up with kids today?
    10. Why does everybody drink so much?
