If someone attacked me with a knife, and I got the upper hand, my response would be "he attacked me with a lethal weapon, revenge is nigh". I'd then show the scumbag how a knife can hurt.

OP, if your friend pulls a knife, and the scumbag also pulls a knife, the scumbag will not just mug your friend, he'll ensure your friend can't run after them. People get killed for less.

Carrying a knife is a stupid idea, the best weopans for self defence are your fists, knowledge and confidence. Im a black belt lt in taekwondo and for years we were thought if anything happens like that situation, one good enough shot like a punch to the throat or kick to the nuts will stun the scumbag for that second that you need to sprint off as fast as you can. even being a black belt doesnt make you think you can stand there and kick the **** out of a mugger but if you can do something to give you time to run its much better.

the guy who this tread is originally about should join some form of martial arts or boxing to give him that confidence he needs.

Anything you have on you can be used as weapon, don't be going off getting a knife. The end of a bottle, a key wedged in between yuor fingers, a jacket with zips. None of these can really be seen as weapons in court, yet would be very effective. Use your imagination!

if you are a proper black belt then yes,yes you should be able to,i don't know about your discipline,only karate,sports karate and kung fu(go green dragons!)

It's against the law to carry a knife, or to stab someone with the knife even in self defence. The gardai will charge your friend if they stop him and find it. The only way to beat this type of thing is to work with the community officer of the local gardai, bring it up at community meetings, set up neighbourhood watch etc. When the scumbags get run off that patch, then people wont get mugged walking around anymore.

Or, just tell your mate to move to a nice area on the southside.

A few years ago there was this lad in my school who when buying fireworks off some travellers got ripped off so a few days later he asked one of the travellers involved in ripping him off for a straightner your man brought down a knive and just as there about to fight he pulled it out on the traveller,the traveller went for him so he went to stab the traveller but he didnt get enough power into the stabbing motion so it just ripped the travellers jacket,the traveller grabbed it off him and stabbed him twice in the leg.

DONT GET A KNIVE.

What about one of those personal alarm things.

Their not illegal - you just pop a button or pull a cord and they let a SERIOUSLY PIERCING alarm. Like so loud you could not ignore it or hang around for long.

Definitely better than getting a knife or learning Pilates or something...

Get a batton, or some kind of beating stick.. serious.. like go to a martial arts shop[ and get one.. becasue alot of them are only useful if used correctly.. so they wont really be able to reverse it on you..
