Very distressing one I'm sure - both for you and your friend. I know I'd feel the very same way.

First, if the caller is using a mobile, try dialing straight into his mailbox to see if you can figure out what his name is. To do this, put the number 5 in between the 3rd and 4th digits of the number and dial. (eg if the number is 087 1234567, then dial 0875 1234567). Hang up obviously before the beep.

When you hear the message, dial #0000# .. hopefully he never changed his mailbox password, you can listen to his messages to try get a better idea of who he is...

    hope you get the bast.

What I did before was to do that to access someone's mailbox, then changed all his mailbox passwords and message minders. Not sure if you can still do that, was a few years ago.

Either way, it was fun. Possibly not the best thing to do though, I'd go to the guards first.

Anyone posting any personal phone numbers on this thread will be immediately and permanently banned.

The numbers for o2/voda above are excluded for obvious reasons. Read the Charter of this board for more information.

you can still do that, but i just change their message for fun, changing passwords is wrong! :) tbh this prank thing is not uncommon and i love messin with the caller, good craic.
my friend put an ad in the college newspaper sellin cds(with home address etc in the ad) and he got loads and loads of those calls from a guy and his friends(luckily we are roommates and also live in a building of 20 students).best thing to do was to put him on speaker phone while we all sat around taking the piss out of him, then when they say they are comin around, actually invite them over(to your sharp appliance filled house-i have a sword...) a big shock they wont come over!(who would come over to our drunken student accomadation :) )if one of your friends is quite chatty and knows how to be abusive :) let them talk.
you have an advantage actually knowing their number, make em pay for it.....also post up the number please :P

Sorry for thread hi-jacking but on those premium text ****ers is there any way of finding out who the companies are and how the hell they got my phone number?

I've never given any company permission to send me texts of any kind, never mind junk asking me to join in some chat and date text crap.

Surely they have no right to have / text my number without my consent?

ring your mobile operator and they will be able to tell you what co. the sms is coming from and they can get u their helpdesk num so u can call and give them an earfull ... Note : you will need the 5 digit number the sms came from(usually 57XXX)

if you did not specifically authorize them to send it to you then its spam and you can complain to the regulator about it. I'll get that number for RegTel and post it here later tonight. You can also forward the message free of charge to 50005, don't edit anything just forward it, and it will be used as an example to highlight issues to the regulator.

Most of the time ppl subscribe to these from ads in the paper/tv but once when i was down the pub some very pretty girls came in promoting for a really crap american beer co. They tricked me into sending off my number in return for free beer:rolleyes: .. ahh hot chicks giving me free beer:) ... kryptonite

Just had a better idea ... i'll try to get the full list of premium sms companies, all the shortcodes they use and there helpdesk nums . I'll stick them on a new thread when i have them cos i think i'm a little OT here

cool, me and chris did that to a bunch of first years, kept pissing us off and slagging us when we left, we turned around and kicked there àsses...the gards most probably won't, they'll probably take a report and leave it, but it doesn;t hurt to try

if its reported and something happens(he beats her up or you) its on record as he was bothering you prior so if anything does seriously happen he'll be neck high in it.

Yeah, he'll be neck high in a suspended sentence, or a fine or some sh|t.

i've done it before, or call from a payphone. it does work esp if its a guy and a girl calls.. or visa versa.

a very good idea :) if you know a girl thats a good talker and can make it sound genuine (just make sure she calls from a witheld number)

    Something about sandwiches

quick question, when u dial into that voicemail (08X 5 XXX XX XX) is it free?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

B-man, calls to voicemail from landlines or other mobiles are not free, They are charged at 13c regardless of the duration of the call. (At least, that is the charge for ringing into a Vodafone voicemail account, O2 and Meteor may be different).

As regards premium short codes (5 digit numbers you get junk texts from) , I work in Vodafone and will be able to print off a list of the codes and the companies they come from, along with the charges and info on how to unsubscribe. Also, you can send those junk sms to 50005 free of charge. That code is a Vodafone code, and the junk sms get sent to Vodafone so that we can monitor and penalise companies who continually send junk sms to our customers.

Original poster, if you are a Vodafone customer, you can get a change of number free of charge if you continue to receive nuisance calls.

Every phone as well as every sim is regestered under a name. Ring up o2 r who ever, and pretend to be a sales person from a phone shop say... on henry street, just make up any old name. Then its just a matter of finding out the details of a phone and sim some nice passer by found and you would like to return to the person.
Next get dat fuker on his oan and beat him bad enough so he wont ever try retaliate(spelling?), and why no bring the girl along too... might become more than friends after.
Guards have there hands tied with **** laws so no point ringin them, sort it out yourself. But dont ever let anything like that go... he knows who you are and obviously has something against you, get him before he gets you again.

Did you no that if you find a phone and hand it into a retailer - if the retailer cannot trace the oaner they send it back and its sold for parts - sometimes you end up with a reward from some stores.

I haven't read all the posts so maybe it was mentioned already. A few years ago a friend of mine was getting similar calls from a knob. I rang him up pretending to be from 02 and if he confirmed all his information to keep our database up to date he would receive €20 call credit. He jumped at the chance and gave me his name and address, the address was his home one in the country. I looked up the number and rang his parents pretending to be an old friend and could I get his dublin address to send on a card. His mother obliged. The next day I posted a sheeps head to him with a letter asking him to stop ringing, I knew where he lived and I would come to see him if he didn't stop. I also rang his mother at home and told her that her son was making abusive calls to an unknown woman and threatning to rape her. She was shocked. My friend never received another call after that.
Try the free credit trick, a moron who calls people like this will often fall for this trick.

After which I was abducted by aliens on my way home. I fought them off, however, with my cold-fusion-powered marshmallow gun. It was really annoying though, it nearly made me late for my guest appearance on Top of the Pops that evening! But still, it was okay in the end...

None of what you said here is true.

The only 100% guaranteed way a phone and/or SIM card would be registered to someone is if its a billphone. As I said before, I work for Vodafone, specifically on the Ready To Go helpdesk, and a LOT of phones and/or SIM cards are not registered to anyone. People are not obliged by law to register their details if they have a Ready To Go (or the O2 and meteor equivalent) phone, and for a myriad of different reasons, a lot of people choose not to register.

As regards making a call masquerading as an agent in a retail outlet, that won't work either. We ask agents in shops to verify the registered owners details, like address, name, date of birth, frequently dialled numbers, top up history etc. If an agent (or anyone masquerading to be one) cannot provide these details, they will not get any information regarding the account from us. That isn't just Vodafone policy. Its against the Data Protection Act.

Finally, in relation to finding a phone and handing it into a retailer, all that will be done with that phone is that its parts will be recycled in an environmentally friendly manner. There is certainly no "reward" offered for handing in a phone you found on the street.

Post the number (pending mod's approved blind eye;)) and start a nuisance campaign...also did you try ringing his voice mail? eg 087 5 123 456, it'll go straight on. If he's stupid enough not to call using private number, maybe he's stupid enough to have a message "Hi, this is Paul, blah blah". Also try hacking his mail box to find out who he is (press # when answer machience comes on, and dial 1234# or 0000# to access messages if he hasnt changed his message bax pin...not sure which one, but try both.) Hopefully its a company phone, so you can get him fired. Even if its not, if you can find out who he is anyway, even from his phone company you can press charges against him (try to record one of the phonecalls, threats etc.) If he threatens to kill your friend etc, the gaurds will take this very seriously, and will find out who he is and arrest him. I've never expierienced it, but i can sympathise. Good luck, i hope you catch the c*nt!!

If you are a Vodafone customer, you can change your Voicemail password by dialling 173 for your handset. Dial 172 from your handset to change your greeting.

Just a heads up in case some unscrupulous people decide to ring into their friends voicemail for a "laugh" and mess around with their mailbox.

Man, sorry about that, just a thought and something I had heard of. So, theres no chance one of your friends got their phone robbed with yours and your friends number in it. This guy actually knows personal details ?? Thats scarey stuff!

I definitely think its worth reporting - for your own safety. It must be very upsetting for both of you to be threatened in that way. I hope it works out.
