either call the gards or get a few friends and wait for him depending on your disposition.

    edit/
any chance its just someone ****ing around with you?

as fair as i know it would'nt be unreasonable to report the phone call and the phonenumber to the gardaí. however, i much prefer the idea of tracking the guy down and breaking his jaw.

first of all sit and think calmly for a while and you should be able to work out who it is, then it will be a lot easier to decide what to do about it

call the gards. Keep a note what the fùcker said for further infomation for the gards

there are a couple of things that you can do.

    1. contact the guardai and give them all the details about the incident, including the phone number of the person ringing your friend. (why someone would make nuicance calls and leave their caller ID on is moronic to begin with)

    2. Contact their mobile phone company and make a complaint about the number and tell them that you have made a complaint to the guardai.

here are the numbers you might need

    Vodafone 1800225588
    vodafone ready to go 1850208787

    O2 1909

    Meteor 1905

    3. get your friend to call his mobile company and have them bar the number from calling him.

should your friend wish to press charges against this individual, then you would need to speak to request the guards to ask for the offenders information from his mobile company.

with any luck they would ahve registered the phone in order to get the free credit that these companies offer when one buys a new phone.

it is also possible that the phone has been stolen. try to find out if any of your friends whose number you do not have had a phone lifted recently.

I've heard about this kind of prank before. They pick a random 08x number and ring it. I'd report it.

Very distressing one I'm sure - both for you and your friend. I know I'd feel the very same way.

First, if the caller is using a mobile, try dialing straight into his mailbox to see if you can figure out what his name is. To do this, put the number 5 in between the 3rd and 4th digits of the number and dial. (eg if the number is 087 1234567, then dial 0875 1234567). Hang up obviously before the beep.

Consider too if this is someone with a grudge against either you or your friend. Is your friend sure that she doesn't recognise the number ?

Try calling this guy up and pretend to be calling from 98FM or something with a cash call. Go through the motions (ask him the cash call total for the hour etc. etc.) and then ask him for his name and address at the end so you can send him his Rehab lottery tickets.

Bit of a dirty trick I know but f**k him - he's being a shallow piece of slime himself anyway.

Depending on your preference, you can either take care of this yourself the old fashioned way (you and a few fellas with bats) or get the Guards involved. In my experience though the Guards will be too busy fining people for stopping in a yellow box than dealing with something even remotely challenging such as this.

Keep us posted on any progress.

people talk big on the phone, do little when in person, thats my experience anyway. sounds like he is trying to intmidate your friend, and ive also found that men who intmidate women with abusive anonymous phone calls are complete cowards and in all likelihood its somebody she knows getting a mate to do the dirty work with a voice she or you dosn't recognise

I work for one of the aformentioned phone companies and we deal with this all the time.
    1. contact the guardai and give them all the details about the incident
this is the best thing to do. report it to the cops and they can deal directly with the phone companies to get the guy(if they feel like doing any work)
    2. Contact their mobile phone company and make a complaint about the number and tell them that you have made a complaint to the guardai.
The phone co. will recommend contacting the gardai. If your friend wants, her number can be changed... but depending on how long she has had num or the seriousness of the calls she may not want to do this
    3. get your friend to call his mobile company and have them bar the number from calling him.
Alot of ppl think this can be done but it can't ... u can't bar incoming calls from one particular num ... i know this for a fact with the co. i work for and i'm sure it's the same for other mobile operators(ppl also try to get those premium txts barred from being sent to there phone.. also not possible)

I know u were angry about this but the last thing u wanna do is call the guy up and start shouting at him ... VERY, VERY bad idea ... just keep your c:cool::cool:l and report the tool to the gardai - thats what their for.

You know whoever did make the call could have diverted all his incoming calls to a different number, so you could be ripping into some innocent person who thinks HE is getting nusience calls from YOU

having said that i'd wanna break the ****er in half too

    PS
    Default Voicemail p/w is 0000*

*I in no way condone dialing 08X5XXXXXXX, pressing #, entering voicemail p/w, pressing hash again and messing with someones voicemail. I post this purely for educational reasons

    Definately the gardai.

Im just wondering how he got your friends name and number aswell as your name. Did she give her number to anyone recently for any reason?

yes it can, when I was with meteor they were able to do it for me. for some reason they were only able to block voice calls, and not text messages. I know this is for a fact as I was told that If I had the number unblocked again I would not be able to have it re-blocked.

There is a legal reason for 5xxxx messages not being blocked not a technical one. something along the lines of "the phone companies cannot block these messages on customers accounts as the phone company has agreed to give access to their network to these numbers, and to block them would be in breach of that agreement."

i don't work for meteor and wasn't 100% about if they could do it or not. Thanks for the info.

The fact that u can't have it reblocked may indicate why it is not widely available ... ie silly ppl changing their mind week to week about who they want to block or unblock from calling them. Every call to the helpdesk like that costs the telco ALOT more than it costs the customer

as for premium sms, yes they have the right to sell their product over the mobile networks and the only way to stop it is to unsubscribe... There was one incident with one of those operators many months back where they oversteped the line(intentionally/accidentally) and broadcast premium txts to alot of ppl they shouldn't have and in that case we locked them out of the network for the night. It later turned out to be a "technical problem" with their systems... i hate those ringtone companies:mad:

Ring the gaurds if that doesnt work divert your phone to the number of the biggest, thickest, psychotic person you know and let them handle it.Or just wait for him to come to your house **** him up and make sure he can never type out a txt msg again.

additionally to what has already been said you could divert your number to your local garda station for the night (you might wanna make sure no one else will be calling you)

ring the gards and give them the number who keeps inpersinating you, and verbal abusing your friend and if they don't do anything just get his number blocked of your and your mates phone

Not a good idea, you'd get in a hell of a lot of trouble by hogging up the gardai phone lines, if they found out.

As far as I know, if you want to get somebody's number blocked, you have to actually go through the guards, Vodafone / O2 / Meteor cannot do it otherwise (that's what I was told when I tried to get some psycho's number blocked from ringing me).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Sorry for thread hi-jacking but on those premium text ****ers is there any way of finding out who the companies are and how the hell they got my phone number?

I've never given any company permission to send me texts of any kind, never mind junk asking me to join in some chat and date text crap.

Surely they have no right to have / text my number without my consent?

Call him & ask him his name. If he's so tough and he coming to kick the sh!t out of you, why should he be bothered if you know who he is?

Or....send him a text telling him you've posted this on the t'internet nad theres loads of people behind you. Should scare off any potential aggressors no bother.

Get a different girl to ring him (on private)
"hey sweety, sorry i haven't been in toch how you been?"
    "eh?who is dis"
    "jenny...who's this?"
    "...... ........!"

    entername on ...... line

i've done it before, or call from a payphone. it does work esp if its a guy and a girl calls.. or visa versa.

Solitaryman, did you lose a phone recently? This could explain how he knew your friends name and the fact you know her.

He can't be the sharpest tool in the box if he's making abusive calls and not blocking his ID (either that or he's ringing from an unregistered number). Ring into his voicemail and see if you recognise his name. Personally though, I'd get onto the Guards, they take this sort of thing very seriously.

    Good luck.

What I did before was to do that to access someone's mailbox, then changed all his mailbox passwords and message minders. Not sure if you can still do that, was a few years ago.

Either way, it was fun. Possibly not the best thing to do though, I'd go to the guards first.

you can still do that, but i just change their message for fun, changing passwords is wrong! :) tbh this prank thing is not uncommon and i love messin with the caller, good craic.
my friend put an ad in the college newspaper sellin cds(with home address etc in the ad) and he got loads and loads of those calls from a guy and his friends(luckily we are roommates and also live in a building of 20 students).best thing to do was to put him on speaker phone while we all sat around taking the piss out of him, then when they say they are comin around, actually invite them over(to your sharp appliance filled house-i have a sword...) a big shock they wont come over!(who would come over to our drunken student accomadation :) )if one of your friends is quite chatty and knows how to be abusive :) let them talk.
you have an advantage actually knowing their number, make em pay for it.....also post up the number please :P

ring your mobile operator and they will be able to tell you what co. the sms is coming from and they can get u their helpdesk num so u can call and give them an earfull ... Note : you will need the 5 digit number the sms came from(usually 57XXX)

if you did not specifically authorize them to send it to you then its spam and you can complain to the regulator about it. I'll get that number for RegTel and post it here later tonight. You can also forward the message free of charge to 50005, don't edit anything just forward it, and it will be used as an example to highlight issues to the regulator.

Most of the time ppl subscribe to these from ads in the paper/tv but once when i was down the pub some very pretty girls came in promoting for a really crap american beer co. They tricked me into sending off my number in return for free beer:rolleyes: .. ahh hot chicks giving me free beer:) ... kryptonite

quick question, when u dial into that voicemail (08X 5 XXX XX XX) is it free?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,890 ✭✭✭embee

B-man, calls to voicemail from landlines or other mobiles are not free, They are charged at 13c regardless of the duration of the call. (At least, that is the charge for ringing into a Vodafone voicemail account, O2 and Meteor may be different).

As regards premium short codes (5 digit numbers you get junk texts from) , I work in Vodafone and will be able to print off a list of the codes and the companies they come from, along with the charges and info on how to unsubscribe. Also, you can send those junk sms to 50005 free of charge. That code is a Vodafone code, and the junk sms get sent to Vodafone so that we can monitor and penalise companies who continually send junk sms to our customers.

Original poster, if you are a Vodafone customer, you can get a change of number free of charge if you continue to receive nuisance calls.

Every phone as well as every sim is regestered under a name. Ring up o2 r who ever, and pretend to be a sales person from a phone shop say... on henry street, just make up any old name. Then its just a matter of finding out the details of a phone and sim some nice passer by found and you would like to return to the person.
Next get dat fuker on his oan and beat him bad enough so he wont ever try retaliate(spelling?), and why no bring the girl along too... might become more than friends after.
Guards have there hands tied with **** laws so no point ringin them, sort it out yourself. But dont ever let anything like that go... he knows who you are and obviously has something against you, get him before he gets you again.

Did you no that if you find a phone and hand it into a retailer - if the retailer cannot trace the oaner they send it back and its sold for parts - sometimes you end up with a reward from some stores.

I haven't read all the posts so maybe it was mentioned already. A few years ago a friend of mine was getting similar calls from a knob. I rang him up pretending to be from 02 and if he confirmed all his information to keep our database up to date he would receive €20 call credit. He jumped at the chance and gave me his name and address, the address was his home one in the country. I looked up the number and rang his parents pretending to be an old friend and could I get his dublin address to send on a card. His mother obliged. The next day I posted a sheeps head to him with a letter asking him to stop ringing, I knew where he lived and I would come to see him if he didn't stop. I also rang his mother at home and told her that her son was making abusive calls to an unknown woman and threatning to rape her. She was shocked. My friend never received another call after that.
Try the free credit trick, a moron who calls people like this will often fall for this trick.
