i think we all know people like this - wannabe socialites who mix in the "art film/jazz/cafe/anti-war bandwagon" circles. human beings have a need to belong i guess, we all need a cruch....i think if the original poster examines their life they will discover they have equally tosserish traits of their own.

go arty picture houses such as the IFI

I go to the IFI to watch films that aren't on anywhere else. What the hell is wrong with that?
sit outside cafés to be seen,
    Don't do that too often
    pretend to like Jazz,
I like jazz. Own approx one hundred jazz records. I suppose vinyl is pretentious too
    wear anti-war/anti-bush badges,
I don't like Bush, I don't need to wear a badge to convey this though.
get their hair done at Toni & Guy
an ordinary barber is good enough for me
buy 'hotpress 'and 'uncut' and all those other pretentious magazine.
Hot Press is undeniably rubbish. On the other hand I do buy Uncut, Mojo, The Wire, Word, Record Collector, DVD Review, Empire and When Saturday Comes every month. I also buy The Guardian every day. I'll bet you hate that too.
    go to bagel bars
    I don't go to them
think the Georges Arcade is where it's at
it's not. Simon's Place is overrated. Spindizzy is a half-decent record shop. Macs isn't. The rest of the place does nothing for me.

You have a very anti-intellectual streak in you. I imagine you prefer the populist option - "if it sells well it must be good". Meaning that The Sunday World is a better paper than The Sunday Tribune, Westlife are better than The Fall, Forrest Gump is better than Coffee and Cigarettes etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,073 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    i wouldn't say anti-intellectual.
i don't really see anything intellectual about eating bagels or getting your hair done at toni and guy.

i think the original poster is most likely a teenager who doesn't like artsy fartsy people.

i think he/she is referring to the type of people who fall into all of the listed categories. not the folks who

**** it. i'm too hung over to even bother.

I agree with the original poster. I think he/she is complaining about the pretentiousness we see from the wannabe socialites.

I don't like Westlife, i ahte their brand of pop marketing. In fact I do like The Fall.

    I don't buy newspapers.

And this thinkg of me preferring the "populist opinion", well I thikn people who go out of their way to be different are in fact going full circle, they are so different that in fact they are so mainstream.

Hmmmm... I'm just wondering - what type of behaviour is acceptable? It seems that if you pursue 'intellectual' interests, you're a 'tosser'. If you prefer to listen to pop music, read The Star and shun the Cafés in favour of McDonalds, you're a 'chav' or a 'knacker'. You know, it seems that nomatter what way you behave, there's no escaping being called a cunt.

God forbid that someone might actually do something because they like it.

Who ever said anything about these pursuits being "Intellectual"?

I think the most intellectual people on this Island are what some call the "working class".

I woudn't call pretentious people intellectual.

haha you got it all wrong.

just because people who are cocks do those things doesnt mean people who do those things are cocks.

i agree with the OP, even if he didnt articulte himself enough for some of the pretentious gits ;) on boardsie, he still has a point......

Spiderbeast, wouldn't it be easier to clarify your opinion on this and just say you hate people who are fake?

If the people you're talking about really do enjoy those things you don't want them to enjoy, then they're not fake. Maybe you just feel insecure that they like things that you don't. We fear that which we don't understand.

If however, you don't mind people who really like jazz for example, but just those that are fake, then....tough. Your attempt to post on t3h intraw3b and still pretend to be cool is just as fake.

sit outside cafés to be seen,
    pretend to like Jazz,
I think he was being very clear about fakery. He thinks some people are tossers. It doesn't mean he thinks you are. every body is a tosser in at least a few peoples opinions, nobody gets universal acclaim from everybody they evr come into contact with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

i find that people who worry too much about other peoples image, tend to be a little bit insecure.

personally i dont give a monkeys what you do or where youre from or what catagory the kids on boards.ie put you in, as long as you buy your round, youre all right by me.

This is an issue now? Damn, I thought it was just a rant.

I don't like people who are pretentious. By definition it's not a good thing. However, you've already seen replies from people who question your reasoning here.

Right now you're judging people and assuming they're doing this for show. It's not like they're just people who happen to like doing these things, and don't really care who's watching them.

If I were to sit in a train station reading a newspaper, while the person infront of me was illiterate, would this make me pretentious? No. I don't know them, and I don't care what they think of me.

I understand your point - I just think you're getting worked up over people who for all you know, aren't really pretentious.

Now aren't you glad that you've spent this amount of time of your life being bothered by people who probably don't care you exist?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

Soooo, spiderbeast... you think people are tossers because of stuff they do, especially stuff that, you believe, they only do to impress others?
    W-he-hey, stop the presses!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

by the way, i dont get this bit about wearing certain things, or doing certain things is considered 'fake'

i mean, by whos standards is it fake, and who exactly is the fun police that can make that insinuation.
people here think people are prentious\fake\whatever because they do a certain thing. well, hey, why dont you go and have a look on this philosophy forum here and ask them if they are all psuedo-intellectuals. i mean, since youre being so passremarkable about people you have no knowledge about, why dont you go onto the politics forum and tell all the tree hugging hippies in their that they are pretentious wánkers, becuase you dont agree with a certain attitude they have, or you dont like the fact that they read a certain magazine.

so when youve figured it out, let me know. by the way, you do realise that being anti-maintestream, is sooo 60's. and that is so uncool.
anti-retro is the new kool kids, and you want to be a part of it.

I don't think he's being clear. If he said "I hate people who are fake", that would be clear. Darting around the direct point and giving examples of what he thinks is someone being fake is really open to interpretation by the person who's reading it.

He thinks some people are tossers. Fantastic. Wanna hear what I think about some of the people on here?

Did I say I thought he thought I thought he though I though he thought I though he thought that I was? Bit long winded to say nothing - something similar to your post really. I was replying to his rant, not defending some public image of me. I don't really care what he thinks of me. I just like to piss people off when I think they're talking sh1t :)

hes better at reading than the illiterate guy

In fairness i think ya know the kind hes talking about, its ok being anti war but its the people who are in your face about it, and the people who think your a neanderthal if your not interested in art/poetry/literature, the kind that talk about fine wines to people who've only ever drank Guinness or Powers etc etc. and just being generally pretentious. But i think the manner in which spiderbeast is goin about this hes coming across as equally pretentious and quite the git

Agreed. But some people are taking him far too seriously.

    I'm class.

Two thumbs up from Siskel and Ebert - that's me.

I think you are missing the point completely. Are you saying that these people are better than everyone else?

Are you saying someone who can read is 'better' than someone who is not?

I used that example in the context of being pretentious
Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious

Ie. Is he making an extravagant outward show that he can read? No. He's just doing it. And when people look at art, they are just doing it. When people listen to Jazz they are just doing that. When you stereotype anyone who likes those things you listed in your original post, you're just being pretentious
Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified

You claim you show merit by being able to work out that they're doing this just to show off to everyone around, including you.

Did you stop and ask people standing around "Do you think these people are being pretentious?" to guage the opinion of those who were there, or did you just stare at them and judge?

If you think they were doing it just for you, then you really have issues with paranoia.

That's got to be the worst example ever. You are suggesting that to look at art or listen to jazz need an ability. (as in your example).

No, but you seem to have the ability to determine when someone is just pretending to like something that they do.

Besides you're now misquoting me, but I expect no less form you. I made reference to 2 seperate examples/meanings of being pretentious.
    an extravagant outward show

Putting on a show, not having an ability? Because this is what I was talking about.

The second one about ability was in reference to you, and you being pretentious.

Do you read my replies or do you just listen to the voices and write what they tell you to?
