    I'm talking about people who:

-go arty picture houses such as the IFI
-sit outside cafés to be seen,
    -pretend to like Jazz,
    -wear anti-war/anti-bush badges,
-get their hair done at Toni & Guy
-buy 'hotpress 'and 'uncut' and all those other pretentious magazine.
    -go to bagel bars
-think the Georges Arcade is where it's at
and they wear hats in the Summer!

you know the type of people I mean.

What are they? Is there a name for them?

Beatniks, perhaps? Or should I say, wannabe beatniks.

Personally, I'd call them pretentious, self-absorbed tossers! :D

    Tossers?

    Tossers is a good name.

I don't know if hipster is the right name but I'm talking about people who:

-go arty picture houses such as the IFI

    -pretend to like Jazz,
    -wear anti-war/anti-bush badges,

    -go to bagel bars
-think the Georges Arcade is where it's at

you know the type of people I mean.

Are they hipsters? What are they? Is there a name for them?

Is there really such a group? I fit into the first, seventh and possibly eighth category above but none of the rest. How do you know that the people you see engaged in one of these activities are also involved in the rest? And your second example seems to be a product of your own imagination more than anything else - maybe people sit outside cafés so that they can smoke, so they can watch passers-by or for a million other reasons rather than wanting to be seen.

I think the original poster has a problem with people who pretend to like jazz to be cool rather than people who really like it although I don't see how you can tell which is which unless you stalk people and see do they switch over to the Ronan Keating or whatever the minute they are alone!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

You can take the IFI off that list right now. Just cos' people have a taste in film that extends beyond things like Shaun Of The Dead (great film) or Saw doesn't mean they are tossers or in any way eejits.

In all fairness, I think he's talking about this sort of person who is quite clearly a tosser.

    Wahhey! Derek Zoolander!

But seriously, is it right to really call people tossers based on their opinions, what they wear, and where they get their hair done?

    Yes. Yes it is.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

Well i fell into that one.

    Let me rephrase.

Its narrow minded to call people tossers based on their opinions, what they wear, and where they get their hair done.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 347 ✭✭DirtyHarry

    no it isnt...you tosser :p

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

Jesus Christ that thing just stuck it's tongue out at me!

  • They're a bunch of random statements that have nothing to do with each other. I like the films at the IFI and I like bagels, but I don't buy music magazines and wear anti-war badges. Am I a hipster or not?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,352 ✭✭✭funky penguin

No your just half a hipster.

Your a hip. Or a ster. Depends on your outlook on life.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

i'm the first, third (without the pretending) and a bit of the last...but i dont get my hair done...ever and none of the others ever really apply to me in any form.

What does wearing a very worn austrlian hat covered in doodles and random badges (no anti-war ones though...too expensive) ribbons and other random **** which is only worn when i'm drinking....fall under?

I must make sure i am cool

but i must add...that description comes very close to describing my two housemates.

ahaha i can't even comprehend the pathetic intellectual level that would consider 'hotpress' pretentious. kill yourself

yes, you have hit the 'oh my god, what a cúnt this poster is' nerve with people.

im surious, what is it about those things listed that you dont like. do they offend your well rounded and mature sensibilities, or do you just have some unjustified opinions?

how do you know what they contribute to society?

come on, if you are going to have an opinion, at least base it on something factual, apart from your own intolerance.

    please explain

    EXACTLY

Nathan barley was the first thing popped into my head when I read this thread. That show is a brilliant piss take of these bohemian tossers this thread was started to slate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

excellent. im bohemian now because i enjoy jazz and have been known to visit the IFC!

if only id known i was cool when i was younger. im like such an anti-hero, it kills me to be soo cool cometimes.

Yeah, me too, becase I like Bagels and Hotpress.

i think we all know people like this - wannabe socialites who mix in the "art film/jazz/cafe/anti-war bandwagon" circles. human beings have a need to belong i guess, we all need a cruch....i think if the original poster examines their life they will discover they have equally tosserish traits of their own.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭nlgbbbblth

go arty picture houses such as the IFI

I go to the IFI to watch films that aren't on anywhere else. What the hell is wrong with that?
sit outside cafés to be seen,
    Don't do that too often
    pretend to like Jazz,
I like jazz. Own approx one hundred jazz records. I suppose vinyl is pretentious too
    wear anti-war/anti-bush badges,
I don't like Bush, I don't need to wear a badge to convey this though.
get their hair done at Toni & Guy
an ordinary barber is good enough for me
buy 'hotpress 'and 'uncut' and all those other pretentious magazine.
Hot Press is undeniably rubbish. On the other hand I do buy Uncut, Mojo, The Wire, Word, Record Collector, DVD Review, Empire and When Saturday Comes every month. I also buy The Guardian every day. I'll bet you hate that too.
    go to bagel bars
    I don't go to them
think the Georges Arcade is where it's at
it's not. Simon's Place is overrated. Spindizzy is a half-decent record shop. Macs isn't. The rest of the place does nothing for me.

    spiderbeast
You have a very anti-intellectual streak in you. I imagine you prefer the populist option - "if it sells well it must be good". Meaning that The Sunday World is a better paper than The Sunday Tribune, Westlife are better than The Fall, Forrest Gump is better than Coffee and Cigarettes etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

    i wouldn't say anti-intellectual.
i don't really see anything intellectual about eating bagels or getting your hair done at toni and guy.

i think the original poster is most likely a teenager who doesn't like artsy fartsy people.

i think he/she is referring to the type of people who fall into all of the listed categories. not the folks who

**** it. i'm too hung over to even bother.

I don't like Westlife, i ahte their brand of pop marketing. In fact I do like The Fall.

    I don't buy newspapers.

And this thinkg of me preferring the "populist opinion", well I thikn people who go out of their way to be different are in fact going full circle, they are so different that in fact they are so mainstream.

Hmmmm... I'm just wondering - what type of behaviour is acceptable? It seems that if you pursue 'intellectual' interests, you're a 'tosser'. If you prefer to listen to pop music, read The Star and shun the Cafés in favour of McDonalds, you're a 'chav' or a 'knacker'. You know, it seems that nomatter what way you behave, there's no escaping being called a cunt.

God forbid that someone might actually do something because they like it.

Who ever said anything about these pursuits being "Intellectual"?

I think the most intellectual people on this Island are what some call the "working class".

I woudn't call pretentious people intellectual.

haha you got it all wrong.

just because people who are cocks do those things doesnt mean people who do those things are cocks.

i agree with the OP, even if he didnt articulte himself enough for some of the pretentious gits ;) on boardsie, he still has a point......

Spiderbeast, wouldn't it be easier to clarify your opinion on this and just say you hate people who are fake?

If the people you're talking about really do enjoy those things you don't want them to enjoy, then they're not fake. Maybe you just feel insecure that they like things that you don't. We fear that which we don't understand.

If however, you don't mind people who really like jazz for example, but just those that are fake, then....tough. Your attempt to post on t3h intraw3b and still pretend to be cool is just as fake.

sit outside cafés to be seen,
    pretend to like Jazz,
I think he was being very clear about fakery. He thinks some people are tossers. It doesn't mean he thinks you are. every body is a tosser in at least a few peoples opinions, nobody gets universal acclaim from everybody they evr come into contact with.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

i find that people who worry too much about other peoples image, tend to be a little bit insecure.

personally i dont give a monkeys what you do or where youre from or what catagory the kids on boards.ie put you in, as long as you buy your round, youre all right by me.

This is an issue now? Damn, I thought it was just a rant.

I don't like people who are pretentious. By definition it's not a good thing. However, you've already seen replies from people who question your reasoning here.

Right now you're judging people and assuming they're doing this for show. It's not like they're just people who happen to like doing these things, and don't really care who's watching them.

If I were to sit in a train station reading a newspaper, while the person infront of me was illiterate, would this make me pretentious? No. I don't know them, and I don't care what they think of me.

I understand your point - I just think you're getting worked up over people who for all you know, aren't really pretentious.

Now aren't you glad that you've spent this amount of time of your life being bothered by people who probably don't care you exist?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,767 ✭✭✭Hugh Hefner

Soooo, spiderbeast... you think people are tossers because of stuff they do, especially stuff that, you believe, they only do to impress others?
    W-he-hey, stop the presses!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,099 ✭✭✭✭WhiteWashMan

by the way, i dont get this bit about wearing certain things, or doing certain things is considered 'fake'

i mean, by whos standards is it fake, and who exactly is the fun police that can make that insinuation.
people here think people are prentious\fake\whatever because they do a certain thing. well, hey, why dont you go and have a look on this philosophy forum here and ask them if they are all psuedo-intellectuals. i mean, since youre being so passremarkable about people you have no knowledge about, why dont you go onto the politics forum and tell all the tree hugging hippies in their that they are pretentious wánkers, becuase you dont agree with a certain attitude they have, or you dont like the fact that they read a certain magazine.

so when youve figured it out, let me know. by the way, you do realise that being anti-maintestream, is sooo 60's. and that is so uncool.
anti-retro is the new kool kids, and you want to be a part of it.
