ispcc do the same thing, pay the street people and the pub goers,
they dont pay as well as far as i can see, they only pay a percentage of what you collect..
id imagine alot if not all charities do that.

I agree with that. Unfortunately I think the constant street presence could have (or may be having) a negative effect on the charity involved. I rang Concern once to ask about the street charity collections and they said it's having a positive net effect on their charity income so if it saves lives I guess what's the problem. They are people doing a job like the rest of us. That job helps save a life in the developing countries. I'm quite sure that a lot of them doing it are actually motivated to do it because of the charity element. If it means diverting a few inches while walking on the street rushing to buy an overpriced sandwich for lunch or what not, so be it. Resolve to donate the cost of an overpriced sandwich to charity or contribute a fiver a month by direct debit.

Im sorry but the concept that they guilt you into giving them money is utter rubbish. They are payed a wage which is not commision based and therefore has no impact on their attitude to you and your trifftyness.

When being trained they are told to NEVER move from the spot they are in, this make them feel less threatning to pedestrians. Sure if they dont get sales they will be fired but I can assure you that over aggressive charity workers never get people to buy their wares either. Take those people who harass you down the street for five minutes demanding you give them money as an example.

And the best way to not feel guilty about passing them by is to actually get a standing order from them and forfeit the seven euro a month. The charity gets its money, the individual on the street keeps their job and you get to feel smug, everyones happy.

I absolutely hate these people. They harrass people in the street, probably have f*ck all interest in the charity they're working for, i'd almost go so far as to call them scum.

As for them being told not to move from the spot they're in, that's rubbish. On several occassions I have been followed down the street by these people, despite my having made no eye contact, and in another case saying "I'm not interested".

I think most people would agree these people are incredibly irritating when you're trying to make your way down the street! They should be banned from the streets.

I have a friend who works for them and is going to India to assist tsunami victims of her own accord and actually had to put in major personal effort to get into the country as a foregin worker. Scum she is not.

Concern? I dont think so argue all you want but in all my years I have never been pursued by a concern charity worker down the street ever and was quite surprised until my friend informed my of their policy.

Actually cocky boy I have talked to many of them on numerous occasions. Although I really shouldn't have bothered posting because there are far too many people like you on boards. If the OP was speaking in favour of Concern's people on the street you'd come out and abuse them. If he said it was sunny outside, you'd say it was pissing. Are you really that bloody bored?

I too pass many of them during the day and as they are human too I just "Sorry, I already contribute to a charity by direct debit" (which I do - Concern as it happens).

So a solution might be to use the above line even if it's not true so that your distress is lessened. Given that you can almost go as far as calling people making a living "scum", telling a little white lie like that will not bother you at all PLUS it might make the day easier for the people on the street who could probably find something nice and cosey indoors to work at and not have to feel like sh!t at the end of the day having to see the worst of human nature scowling by!

My two cent:

I dislike these concern people for the simple reason that when people are out in force FOR FREE FOR CHARITY (daffodil day for example), people will be more inclined to walk right by them. The money people give in direct debits or whatever may help some people, but I'd much prefer my money to go straight into a charity rather then pay some girl/guy money to harass people.

They can be quite annoying, I get hit by them at least twice a day every day allmost, I walk the all through the city to and from work.

I thought they were doing it for free to be honest because they belevied in the charity, and they say to me constantly "I really beleive in this, you can really make a differance" etc. While I suppose I dont really mind the fact they are getting paid, but they shouldn't make you feel so guilty for not signing up every time, I was told the last day that I dont give enough and what kind of person was etc, when I explained to one of these charity people that I wasnt going to sign up because I am already signed up to 3 others (True too, homeless, worldvision and lifeboats), he simply said that I still wasn't doing enough, at the time I just let it go because I thought he was just an over zealous and because he eas doing it for free etc it wasnt worth my time to argue with him.

I think that unless you are being hassled by these people every day you REALLY dont know how bad it is, they take over a whole street so you have to run the gauntlet and make some sort of contact with one of them, that is harassment.

They have really but me off their different charitys the only one I would actively go out of my way to support is those Lifeboat guys, those guys simply rock in my books and need all the cash they can get. (And no I dont work for them or anything, just a fan)

I don't agree at all why should I give my money to some arrogant twat in town knowing only a percentage is going to the charity when I can give it to an organisation like the Red Cross or Goal that gives 100% of all donations to the charity??

1. People in Ireland want to make a difference.

2. People who make a difference still need basic essentially, like y'know food, n clothes and a roof over their head.

My girlfriend works for a charity (no she's not a chugger) and loves working for them but in the end of day needs to earn a crust. She gets paid.

Now you may disagree with these guys getting paid. But spending 8 hours a day (and considering the weather we've had the last week who'd want to). They also make, proportional, a serious amount of revenue for a charity.

Consider those flower sellers on daffodil day, they make a once of source of cash for the charity, the chuggers create a constant cash flow for a charity, so yes they get paid, but in terms of what they generate it's money well spent by a charity.

If you think that this is wrong and waste of space, then you probably weren't going to give money in the first place. If you don't and you understand that because they're out there and generating revenue for a good cause then give them the time of day

They all wear bright clothing that makes it pretty obvious what charity they are from. So if I want to donate to this charity, I will go up and ask one of them. There is no need for them to talk to me. So when they do, I feel like getting stabby.

Reciently my friend and I raised over €6,000 for concern.

That was before we realised that the majority of that money will go to people working within the orgasnisation and NOT to the people in countries that need it.
Now we've got a LOT of money lyin around and need to find a worthwhile charity to give it to... one where all of the money will go to famine or war victims... any ideas??

(we don't want to give it to the Tsnuami victims, they have recieved more money because of that one off event than the pepole who are suffering war or famine everyday!!)

i know its for a good cause but i can sympathise with a few people here

a while back my summer job involved a fair bit of walking around town and the amount of them i had to dodge and evade was unbelievable, i was 16 at the time and i didnt look older but every single one of them hassled me, at one stage when i walked out the door in work there was one on each side of me thus id have to blow off one on the way out and again when i came back 20 minutes later
