    Why does the chance of snow get eveyone so excited just go on holidays to Austria? Also its Febuary i.e. not winter anymore so forget about it you'll just have to wait until november until we can see if we get "cold weather" which you know we won't.

    because it relieves the ever increasing boredom generated by work and dark evenings. A bit of disruption can be a good thing. Also, although February is the start of Spring, it's not as cut and dry as that. The last biggest snowfall in Ireland was at the end of February '91 so it can still happen. A couple of days (even 1) off work would be more than welcome :)

    weather wise it's pretty wintry alright but in seasonal terms, Feb is Spring. The seasons ae screwed in Ireland anyway so it doesn't really matter. I see spring from the time the clocks go forward and Summer from the 1st of May.

    The cold spell that weathercheck was going mad about at the start of this thread ie the Easterly blast after this initial northerly always depended on what our high did and various other factors.

    I dont see anything today that rules out an eventual Easterly, though a week or two later than first thought.
    It doesnt rule it in either , this is just an event that needs constant watching as the models are struggling with it.

    Yep now GFS has come round looks cold till Wednesday
    day although not snowy.. High Pressure positioning
    has changed and will again. Outputs tonihgt will be
    interesting :)

    A Easterly could happen but looking cold from
    Saturday for now ;)

    G Flemming hinted at some decent snowfall over this weekend on the 6.55 cast.

    Highs of 4c on Saturday, 7c on Achill Island and Valentia.

    His rainfall prediction chart showed a lot up to the NW, and a good trough in there too.

    Most of the posters there are UK based of course and tend to look for things/trends that suit over there but it's a great read.

    Quick Outlook from myself :)

    Thursday:
    Continuing mild, dull and drizzly with some sunny spells.
    Little frost on Thursday night with temperatures of
    5-8c under cloud cover.

    Friday
    The day our rut finally ends and it starts to weather!
    It will start as any other day in the south and east, cloudy
    with some drizzle but rain will build in the northwest by
    morning and will begin to spread southeast. The rain
    will be heavy and prolonged in places with some very heavy
    falls of upto 25mm in places. A rapid decrease in temperatures
    will occur behind the front towards evening. The rain will
    turn to snow above circa 500m in the Midlands and East
    towards evening before finally clearing away after midnight.
    Wintry showers will move into the northwest.

    Saturday
    A much colder day with a cold airmass becoming established,
    it will be noticeably windier also. Heavy wintry showers
    will affect the west throughout the morning turning to snow
    during the afternoon. Later on Saturday a further cold front will move
    down from the north giving a period of snow to the North for a time
    before decaying and clearing south with some snow possible
    for North Connacht and North Leinster. Maxima of 6c
    in the south to 4c in the North. A widespread frost later
    with temperatures dipping to -2c in places. Snow showers
    continuing in the North and West.

    Sunday
    A colder day still with some snow showers in the west. There
    is a possibility of a slack area of low pressure moving down the
    Irish Sea to deliver some further showers of sleet or wet snow
    in the east. A cold day everywhere with bitter northeasterly
    breezes. Maxima of 5c in the southeast to 2c in the midlands.
    Temperatures will dip to -3c in the north later but southern
    and Eastern areas may remain above freezing due to cloudcover.

    Monday
    A cold day with light Easterly breezes and a harsh frost to
    begin. Sunny in the west and north but with some light wintry
    showers in the east. A mostly dry day otherwise. Maxima
    of 5c in the sunnier north to 4c in the East. Temperatures
    will plummet to -4c in some sheltered spots later.

    Tuesday
    Similar, a freezing start with frost and ice. A dry day
    countrywide with little or no shower activity. A
    cold Easterly breeze may bring some cloud onto
    the east coast. It will feel bitter here with temperatures
    of no more than 4c, upto 7c in the sunnier west.
    Another harsh frost in the midlands and east later.

    Interesting.

    Met ÉIREANN and the beeb/UKMO are still going for temps across Ireland of 3-5C which would restrict snow certainly in Dublin and down the East coast to inland areas and high ground though during the daytime on Saturday.
    Saturday night might paint a different picture if the precipitation is there.


    By the way this threads life expectancy is limited-tick tock tick tock...
    It's original purpose was to discuss the likelyhood( high at the time) of a prolonged cold spell and the fact that the UKMO were adding their weight to it.

    That Easterly cold snap at best is postponed for now so this model chatter and trend indications discussion very soon will have to return to the current indications thread.

    Very interestign prospects of a period of snow in the east
    into Sunday morning, interesting :D

    Earthman perhaps rename the thread instead of locking
