I HATE watching any kind of pirated movies because it just ruins the experience of watchin the film in the first place.. no matter how good a copy it is it's still not going to have its flaws compared to a proper DVD..

If i could....I would do all of the above......

What DVD's do you watch? Any discs i copy are full dvd quality. They are the very same as the originals.
There are lots of programmes out there that will rip the disc and give you full control over the content to be burned....(trailers, extras etc)
Commercial dvd's are duel layer and are about 9G most consumer discs are 4.7G and if the disc is burned straight onto the copy you will get some reduction in quailty.
Most pirate dvd's bought from dodgie blokes at your front door are very bad this is because the original is from a camcorder in the cinema in most cases.

would agree with that, if its something copied with a camcorder from the movies. Have been give a copy of meet the Fockers and as much as I really want to see it, know I wont enjoy the film if I see it this way!

So, its been consigned to a cupboard somewhere where it can stay until I see it in the cinema!

Personally I copy any new games or DVDs I buy- as insurance against the bloody things getting scratched...... I have a stack of coasters here- including some of my favourite games that I used come back to again and again (Colonisation/ Civ 2 and 3 etc for example). Once you have paid for the disk, I believe there is nothing fundamentally wrong with making a "personal copy" of the disk as insurance against future mishaps.

I make backups of my disks to play, the actual disk gets re-sealed and stored elsewhere.

Also, if the film is short, I'll put 2/3 onto 1 disk to save time, taking out all the menus and special features.

    NEVER FOR PROFIT

I usually rip DVDs to my hard drive and compress them, but only for personal use.

I copy just to get rid of that annoying COpyright theft Message at the start of EVERY DVD. It's on for like 20 minutes on some discs. If they got rid of that I probably wouldn't download/copy as much.

Oh and I'm being serious... It really gets on my tits.

A mate of mine spends most of his paycheck on cds dvds and games, to redress the balance I spend a tiny fraction of my cash on blank discs and copy all of his stuff. All in the name of justice of course. Some months he does not buy enough stuff that I like so I then go online and download some content instead, just to maintain the status-quo.

Well to be realistic its OK to copy something for yourself. Its not going to hurt anybody to make say a personal backup or get a copy of a friends one. Besides its only wrong to SELL a copy in my opinion as thats being scabby.

I copy most films I rent and swap people for others.
I have about 400 films on DVD .
I have them all in DVD cases with printed covers .
As for the people who say the quality of Pirate films is poor ,they dont know what they are talking about.

I bought 4 pirates off guys on a market stall in Balbriggan today (only one was for me now to be honest!) had a little look at them - the quality of them all were crap - really really dodgy and has been said before completely ruins the experience of the film.

But for people who buy a proper dvd, copy it as back up or whatever or even make a copy for a friend - I dont see a massive problem, its your property,do what you like!

Made my mind up today that I aint buying anything dodgy off those fella's in Balbriggan market again! Just not worth it, would rather buy it off cdwow or whatever when it comes out properly!

Not everyone that makes the copies know what they are doing with a pc. They're normally gangsters. However when making your own copies, like this thread suggest they are of the same quality.

You mean those copied screeners are good quality? - I think not. I bought a copy of troy which was a screener. The quality was total crap. When I saw the trailer on TV - I wished I had waited for the real thig instead.

Copies from DVDs areperfect though - even when shrunk to single layer. I even do the printed covers and labels so that it is impossible to tellfrom an original. Ink is expensive though - that's the key cost.

I have loads of movies on Div-x that I've downloaded and a fair bit of music.

I don't sell anything for money, and would never support those that do. The quality is ****e for some of them, but the quality of the movies themselves are worse. I don't feel guilty about it since most of the time it saves me dropping a LOT of money on absolute tripe that comes out now a days. If I really like a movie I might buy the full version DVD, but I wouldn't rent it or see it in the theatres unless its a movie I have to see. LOTR / Matrix etc.

Music - same deal. I used to buy 2 Cd's a week, every week for years. Often just to get one song. Such a waste of money, as I've spent thousands over the years to get less than what I'm getting now.

you seem be talking about divx screeners which isnt whats being talked about here, if your saying you notice the difference between an original dvd and a copyed dvdr then you really dont know what your talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,689 ✭✭✭✭A Dub in Glasgo

DVD copies from a DVD are perfect. You would be pushed to notice the difference unless it was heavily compressed to fir onto a single layered disc and you are watching it on a big screen. Most new DVD burners and blank discs are dual layered now.

I have bought 300 legitimate DVDs but now I have signed up to an online rental service and I copy the DVDs.

I will not sell copies at all and some scammers even try and advertise pirate as legitimate. There are a lot of these DVDs on ebay advertised as legitimate DVDs.

I would never buy copied screener as generally they are rubbish.

Used to copy DVDs a bit. The aul rent and copy trick. But I find its much more economically viable if I just download the movies and burn em to DVD.

it's pretty fúckin obvious i wasn't talkin about retail copies isn't it.. dumbass

Most new DVD burners and blank discs are dual layered now.

single layer DVD-R... roughly 25 cents upwards
dual layer DVD-R (+R)... roughly 5 euros upwards

Remove the extras and recompress the video (automatic with software like CloneDVD), most people won't notice the difference.

This topic will probably get closed. There is no "fair use" policy with DVDs that allows you to make a back-up, copying DVDs is illegal even if you own the original (afaik).

Yes, and that's a pile of ****, to be honest. Another way for the average Joe Soap consumer to be screwed over again by the big fat-cat movie companies. What happens if you pay €25 or more for a DVD and it ends up getting damaged in some way? "Oh, sorry mate, you're just going to have to buy another copy, I'm afraid." F**k that for a game of soldiers, I say. I paid good money for that DVD, Mr.-Big-Movie-Studio-Executive, I should be able to make a backup copy of it for myself if I feel like it. Hell, I bought the damn thing, out of my own money, I should be able to stick it in a f**king microwave and nuke the bastard to pieces if I feel like it.

Remember kids, piracy makes baby Jeebus cry, but making backups of your own, legitimate DVDs to prevent damage, etc., is A-OK. And f**k what the movie studios say!

To be honest I like to own the original DVDs because the quality is perfect but more importantly for me I like to stack them on the shelves like books and show them off to the world. There's nothing pretty about a copied DVD.
Im not on any moral highground though, id watch a copied DVD or pirate but I think I spend so much money on DVDs that I have nothing to feel guilty about. It's the same with downloading music. To hell with these people who go on about..you must pay for your songs...Shut up...I own thousands and thousands of original cds and i've paid through the nose (and I will continue to do so) for them so my conscience is clear when I download a new track that has yet to come out on single.
I know Imight be digressing from the thread title but I'm a DJ and the only way you can compete with the DJs that work for a radio station and have all the tunes before they're released is to download them. THats my two cents.
