Im my opinion the frames are the most over-rated band in ireland. For the past few years they have been churning out boring predictable rock... They have never progressed beyond playing the college circuit and a few gigs in the olympia now and again... oh yes and we also had the unfortunate experience of seeing them at witnness a few years ago as well....

The sooner people actually listen properly to the muck produced by acts such as the frames, paddy casey etc and actually realise its very poor quality the better... drivel of the highest order....

the frames are absoulate ****e, always have been and always will, i agree with above, they haven't moved on.

Paddy casey i do like, (livin has ony 4 good songs, the first 4) But i would be expecting a whole lot more when he does a new album, altough i wouldn't hold my breath!!!

BTW when will the frames or other such irish acts REALIZE that image is ALSO a big part of your music, OMG a big red beard

What 14-16 yr old is gonna say ''oh yeah these guys look cool'' im sorry but that is the way it is when your that age.

I remember seen the stunning in '94 and they were rocking but they looked like rockn' roll stars.

But NO we have BIG CURLY HAIR and RED BEARDS.

**me walks away feeling a whole lot better**

So what would you define as good music?

I was at the New Years gig, I stopped listening to the Frames a year or so ago, I was really into them up until then. My taste just progressed I suppose. My friends were going to the gig so I went too. It was good, but I've been to better Frames gigs.

I would never judge a gig or a band by the fact that the lead singers hair happens to be curly.

Sorry, I wasn't pointing the thing about the hair to you, just the question regarding your taste in music. Please elaborate and name some artists/bands.

I like rock'n'roll music and rock/blues type stuff as well, which you could include the frames in the rock category... i just think there music is bad and a bit unimaginative.

    Bands i like:

    Radiohead
    Ash
    Oasis
    Foo Fighters
    Blur
    Kings of Leon
    David Bowie
    Nirvana
    U2
    Audioslave
    Rage Against The Machine
    Rory Gallagher
    PJ Harvey
    Weezer
    The Jam
    Whipping Boy
    Lou Reed
    The Streets
    Belle And Sebastian
    Snow Patrol
    Metallica
    System Of A Down

they are just some artists of the top of my head

I also like dance and electronic music by such bands as chemical brothers, underworld, leftfield.
Sigur Ros are another band i like, thats a completely different type of music.

My background would be rock and bluesy rock type stuff, but i have a wide range of stuff in my collection...

I'd have to say that The Frames are better than some of those bands you mentioned in my oppinion.

I like to judge music purely by what it is. Music. Not by the image created or displayed by the artists.

As far as this goes. I feel The Frames are not so bad. They have played overseas, Australia and the likes. I don't understand why you say you had the unfortunate experience of seeing them at Witnness. Why did you watch them if you don't like them? I saw Oasis there a year or so ago and I left because I felt I could find something better to listen to. I found Josh Ritter in one of the smaller tents. He's ok.

I find some of the lyrics and music The Frames produce to be above average of what is out there.

I do have a wide musical taste.
From The Frames to Paul Van Dyke, Gigi D'Agastino to David Kitt, Django Rheinhardt to Ennio Morricone, Tom Waits to Leonard Cohen, Smashing Pumpkins to Enya, Counting Crows to NWA, Ryan Addams to Bela Fleck, Dave Matthews Band to Scooter, Bob Segar to Daft Punk, Weezer to Bach, DMX to Deep Forest, Joni Mitchell to Joan Baez, Dire Straits to Live, Paul Brady to Rammstein, Prince to Prodigy, Sinead O'Connor to Springsteen, The Wallflowers to Tool.

You get the picture. As I said, I haven't listened to The Frames in about a year, I got their latest album and haven't even bothered to listen to it because I'm listening to other artists who I prefer and think are far superior. But as far as bands go, they aren't the worst.

What makes you an authority on music Third_Echelon?

If people get enjoyment out of the music I don't really see what harm its doing. Just because you don't like it doesn't define it as "drivel of the highest order".

I personally really like The Frames, thought their new album is excellent. I also used to be a fan of Paddy Casey's first album, but thought his second was dreadful.

WTF...who gives you the right to call me a loudmouth idot, i clearly was stating how bands get new audiences such as 14 to 16 yr olds and alot of whats in a 14yr old head is image, so im a loud mouth for this am i?????

Btw my favourite band is The Stone Roses, i also love Mowtown and the rolling stones and i must not forget a REAL GOOD irish band The Stunning.

Third Echlon don't call me a loudmouth idot .....it really offends

In your opinion thats ok, but i have to disagree. Not one frames album would touch in anyway any album by any of those bands for quality...

The amount of classic albums in that list alone by those artists is astonishing. The frames just dont cut the mustard in comparison.
    cormie wrote:

    As do I

More than likely to the people who were students over the past 10 years or so and are now there on there year away... I wouldn't be surprised.

Getting a good spot for the next band if i remember correctly and my friend wanted to see them. They were not that exciting in fairness. They have 1 or 2 good songs and thats it.
    cormie wrote:

That was a particularly bad oasis gig. The sound was fcuked up for the first 6 or 7 songs before someone actually realised that it sounded ****. Wasnt too bad after that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,867 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Well in my oppinion Oasis are not a good band and are not better than The Frames. I did like them when I was about 12 or so, and then I started listening to other music, then about a year later, I thought to myself that I would put on an Oasis album as I recall it being good and I hadn't listened to it in a while, so I stuck it on and it didn't make it past one song before I switched it off. Purely my oppinion however.

I am not here to say who is better than who. I am just saying The Frames are not as bad as you make them out to be. And it doesn't matter if Glen Hansard is an idiot, I have no oppinion of if he is or not, I don't know him. I judge by music not personality.

The Frames do have a slightly unique sound to them and it can be quite appealing.

They didn't really play the same song twice. They were playing Fake and were interrupted by a screening of them performing on some countodown show with Gay Byrne where they were playing Hey Day by Mic Christopher. After the countdown they played another song or two and decided to play the full version of fake without fear of interruption.

Mark Geary, supporting, also added an interlude of Hey Day to one of his songs.

I was at the gig last year when they didn't come on till a few seconds before 12, did a countdown then auld lang syne then the rest of the set, that was a great night. Didn't go to this new years cos i saw them the other week and they were terrible. Love the albums and that was the first bad gig ive been to by them

Thats crap right there! How is how ya look gonna influence your talent? If Bob Dylan played in a leotard, shaved off all his hair and wore dutch clogs do ya think all his fans would go straight off his music?

Sure the frames are no girls aloud, but ya can still listen away to their music no bother

To be honest unless some scientist produces the Fliminy Music Scale with Chaz and Dave at absolute and Elvis in full come back get up at the peak then we are never going to aggree if music is good or bad.

How about its music which I do not like or music which I like dont give reasons cause they will be based on opinions and they are never objective are they?

I have met the Frames in San Francsisco and they are very nice people, sent me tickets for their gig in Dublin Castle for 6 weeks later and that was a lovely night.

I have met the bassist from System of a Down and he was an absolute ****. Tried to speak to the singer / guitarist from Sigur Ross but he didnt understand me and ran away.

This is nothing to do with music but it will colour my opinions of the music, you see?

Im of the opinion that this new wave of irish 'whine rock' is a pile of toss. Damien rice, paddy casey, mundy, christ almighty its like they all came fromt he same bloody blueprint. *Irritating 30yr old + whining about being a teenager + acoustic guitar = new wave of irish whine rock'.

I heard a damien rice song the other day about how 'love taught him to lie, life taught him to die'. I wanted to stab him in the face with his f*cking guitar and strangle him with his god damn microphone lead. That'll give him something to whine about.

Look this is a load of shíte, if you don't like teh frames, don't listen to them, stay away from their circles and don't discuss them with fans. I personally hate Death Metal and Rap music, there's forums on here for both of them, do i post in them? no, do i even look in them? no. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're ****e!

Amen brother. Why is the current generation of Irish "rock" appealing to the suicidal/self-obsessed/puerile tendencies in their respective audiences?

Whine Rock is a pretty good analogy tbh. I've been to a few Rice gigs and he has a talent, I just wish to fcuk he would start singing like a man instead of an emasculated cuckhold and get out there and enjoy life.

Casey on the NYE late late was a complete joke. Such sulleness and ignorance towards the host of a show I haven't seen in years. Hansard's beard looked like it was about to burst into flame, jebus the man is only gone 30 and is from Ballyfermot ffs. What's that all about?

Mundy should be up there with Tabby...selling Big Macs in Bundoran.

Yes i can deny theyre talented. Sorry but 3 chord tricks and miserable lyrics do no a good musician make.

I'm not gonna bother quoting anyone here 'cause it sounds like all of the people who are saying they're ****e have exactly the same reason for thinking it.

Glen Hansard has red hair and a beard. I can't for the life of me think of any reason for this being in any way relevent to the music of the Frames. Nor can I think of any reason why one would dislike him or feel the need to slag him off. It's just hair... is it not? Please explain it to me. Please! I would really like to know.

You all seem to think Glen Hansard is a gob****e... etc. Why do any of you think this? Do you have one reason? Please explain this to me too.

And for the love of god what Raul Sweet Meat said. If you don't like them why the hell do you spend so much time talking about them? I'd really like you all to expalin these things to me...
