They couldn't hit an elephant at this dist... - Last words of General John Sedgewick, 1864

Actually, Gen. Sedgwick accompanied by his chief of staff Maj. Gen. McMahon were walking towards their rifle pits and as they showed themselves over the line there was sniper fire from the Confederate lines, whilst this happened the troops ducked and dived as they changed positions. Maj. Gen. McMahon is recorded as saying:
The general said laughingly 'What! What! men, dodging this way for single bullets! What will you do when they open fire along the whole line? I am ashamed of you. They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance.'

Apparently the troops were somewhat abashed, but not enough so to show themselves. Moments later, a soldier is reported as passing right in front of Gen. Sedgwick at the same time as the distinctive sound of a Confederate bullet. The soldier instantly dropped to the ground for protection and again, Maj. Gen. McMahon is recorded as saying:
The general touched him gently with his foot and said 'Why, my man, I am ashamed of you dodging that way,' and repeated his previous remark, 'They couldn't hit an elephant at this distance.' The man rose and saluted and said, 'General, I dodged a shell once, and if I hadn't it would have taken my head off. I believe in dodging.' The general laughed and replied, 'All right, my man; go to your place.'

It is at this point that Maj. Gen. McMahon says that the scream of a bullet was heard once again, however this time it did not fly past but instead it's journey was cut short by Gen. Sedgwicks left cheek.

And that is the story of the last moments of General John Sedgwick. Not that the misquote annoys me or anything. ;)

"If World War 3 is fought with nuclear weapons, then World War 4 will be fought with sticks and stones." - Albert Einstein. (I believe).

Makes you think, doesn't it? And the scary thing is, who's the guy with his finger on the big red button? Bush! God help us all!

Maybe someone should mention that quote to him.

"I'm not normally a praying man but, if you're up there, please help me Superman!" - the one and only Homer J. Simpson.

"You talking to me? You talking to me? Then who the hell else are you talking to? You talking to me? Well, I'm the only one here. Who do you think you're talking to? Oh yeah? Huh? Ok."

    and

"Listen you f**kers, you screwheads! Here's a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the c*nts, the dogs, the filth, the sh!t, here is someone who stood up." - Robert De Niro as Travis Bickle in 'Taxi Driver'. Somedays, I know exactly how he feels! :D

"Hey, Ryan, be careful what you shoot at. Most things in here don't react too well to bullets."

    and

"A great day comrades, we sail into history!" - Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius, Red October. In fact, that entire speech he gives his crew is fantastic.

"My Morse is so rusty, I could be sending him dimensions on Playmate Of The Month!" - Scott Glenn as Captain. Bart Mancuso, U.S.S. Dallas.

"Russians don't take a dump, son, without a plan." - Fred Dalton Thompson as Rear Admiral Josh Painter.

All from the film 'The Hunt For Red October'. In fact, that film is jam-packed with some fantastic quotes.

There's loads more quotes I really like, some have been mentioned already by other people in this thread. If I can remember anymore, I'll post them.
