It's a fact is it? Could you show me something to prove this fact?

The point about rugby developing from soccer and American football from rugby is stupid.

Firstly they’re not trying to recreate the game they developed from. They are new games created for various reasons. They are totally different games with different rules etc.

Fifa is trying to be a soccer game. It use rules, players, pitch layouts, etc from the sport called soccer. These are all virtually made up by a computer. That is a fact.

You told me that if someone played Fifa enough and entered into big competitions they could be considered sportsman.

How someone playing a game that is trying to recreate a sport on a virtual environment is just as much a sportsman as real footballers in beyond me.

Comparing a CS player or a Fifa player to a rugby player and asking are they the same is never going to work.

There are many different types of sport. Some are more physical than others

The question is can computer game playing be considered a sport.

First thing to look at, is there precedent.
Is there a sport, that could be compared to say

    Consider that olympic sport 'shooting'.

The actions taken by the participant to complete his event.
The sportsman uses his hand eye cordination to track a shot, then his fast reflexes to activate the firing mechanism, (trigger).
The gun does the rest. He reloads when nessacary.

    This is an accepted sport.

And counterstrike uses all the same skills.

I do not find any essential differences between the 2.

"Man, you go through life, you try to be nice to people, you struggle against the urge to punch ‘em in the face, and for what?! For some pimply little puke to treat you like dirt unless you're on a team. Well I'm better than dirt ... well most kinds of dirt. I mean, not that fancy, store-bought dirt. That stuff’s loaded with nutrients. I …I can't compete with that stuff."

What it comes down to at the end of the day is this.

Havok, Kaids, Xterminator and everybody else who believes that computer games are sports.

I presume everybody is into games who is arguing against me.

Can you turn around and tell me that you are athlete's because of your skills in computer games.

Neil do you consider yourself an athlete? Are you a sportsman because your a very good quake 3 player?

If you can honestly answer yes I consider myself to be an athlete and I'm very proud of it I'll let this thread drop.

To be honest i actually pity you if you answer yes.

I asked Sam (Koopa) about this yesterday on IRC and I got some interesting answers. Koopa if you don’t already know is one of Irelands best FPS players and one of the top quake world players in the world.

Me: Sam are you an athlete?
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> no </font>
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2"> an athlete is like a runner and **** </font>
    <font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">Is motor racing a sport, I think not </font>

There you go all quotes from Koopa. If computer gamers were athletes I really do feel that one of the top players in the world would think so.

    Don't you?

For god sake, stop using the word athlete. Not all sportsmen/women are athletes. Darts, snooker etc are sports, but the players are not athletes. Of course playing a game doesn't make you an athlete, but doesn't not make you a sportsperson.

    For one tom,
I dont concider myself an athlete, or a good quake player for that matter. I'd say am about adverage.

Not all sportmen are Athletes, only the sports that require major physical body movment / endurance
    Quake, does not.

B4 i go on, I'm sickened @ the last comment u made about Motersport. Ppl involved in moter sport are athletes. Formula one drivers Have to take 2 to 3 times there body weight about 13 times a lap for 60 odd laps while still keeping constant concentration. They lose more then 3 letres of body fliud over a race.
Thats more physical then rugby in my book...

All sports involve mental skill, even the ones that seem just 100% physical. Take for example a long distance runner. They have to train themselfs metaly, they have to strigise how to play the race. Break from the group on the 2nd last lap or so.
How many times have u heard a top athlete say "its just as mental as it is physical"

Chess and Dart players i would not concider athletes either. This does not how ever make them any less of a sport.

Sport is about skill, its about practicing and training that skill, and most of all its about competing.
Fitness features in most, but is not a requirment.
