    It's not democratic?

If you disagree then ensure you vote against the parties who are denying your rights in the upcoming council elections, then at the next general election too. That's democracy. One can't really expect there to be a referendum on every little thing. I'd be more upset about them allowing the US Military to use Shannon airport.

Use your vote. That's how it works.

How did the stupid bitch get my e-mail address is what I want to know?

Not only is she an ignorant smoker but she's a spammer too.

prohibition doesn't work and i cant see this ban being properly enforced, there should be some sort of compromise made, such as making it the law to have sufficient air conditioning in pubs or something and having smoking and non smoking sections, i just dont see a ban like this working

btw, someone told me that the ban affects all public places, like outside as well, hes talking out of his ass right? that would just be overkill

i can see the off licences making a killing out of this as well, if the ban does work, i wont be heading out much anymore

one other thing, does this apply to niteclubs as well, and if so, hows that gonna work, you'll have to go outside for a smoke, how'r ya gonna get back in again

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

The ban applies to all enclosed workplaces, including niteclubs. You're probably not going to be able to get back, so you either wait a couple of hours before lighting up or sacrifice the rest of the night just for a nicotine fix.

I don't think there'll be any problem with the effectiveness of the ban. Just look back over some of the previous posts. Some non-smokers are just itching to report people. Publicans aren't likely to just sit back and let smokers spending a couple of quid to cost them thousands of euro in fines.

I smoke, and I think the ban is right BUT there should have been the option to have an enclosed area to smoke inside where staff would not have to go. Jeez, we live in a technological age and there isn't a SAFE WAY to smoke indoors.

THe whole thing about workplaces extending to a truck for example is ridiculous when mothers or fathers driving their children to school can smoke away.

Slowly but surely this is becoming more and more like a nanny state..

    oh, and another thing.

The film from the petition site IS funny!

actual yes, yes they do. (smoke at their desks)
also not every one works in an office...
and while they might not blow it straight in my face, a few smokers in a enclosed indoor area do make the whole are stink. I dont see how you can disagree with that ...

the car park ... well, that does seem a little odd ... um what sort of a car park is it? underground? what about security gaurds ... do you have any ... do they not work? ... but if its "open" then it's out doors as far as I'm conserned...

I cannot wait for this ban to come in. Im sorry, but after years of putting up with ignorant bastards blowing smoke in your face in bars, coming home smelling like an ashtray and hoarse from breating second hand smoke, i and many others like me can finally go to the pub and not worry about getting emphysyma. And i think i speak for all non smokers when i say...enjoy your smokes...in the f*cking car park, suckers!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,027 ✭✭✭alleepally

    god, I hate non smokers.

thank fcuk i can still kill myself at home.

*flick* ahhh, that's better. smoke! i love my addiction

Aren't there EU rules and fines for spam now

I seem to remember a figure of €500 - which is more than the smoking fine :D

Hear hear! Roll on the smoking ban, it'll be a very nice change....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,102 ✭✭✭RossFixxxed

Maybe if you're trying to stay healthy the pub is the wrong place to be? I go to the pub after a week of working and going to the gym to undwind and have a drink or 2 and a smoke.

Surely you could divert your time to figuring out a compromise that suits BOTH sides. I do feel I have some right in this matter to smoke with other smokers somewhere. At least a smoking area somewhere rather than women etc standing out in dark laneways trying to grab a quick smoke...

This doesn't help at all does it:
You're free to enjoy your filthy habit in the comfort of... the fu<k away from me!

Ah self righteous judgements. Wonderful. I'm on a real BBS now.

I think the calls for enclosed smokers areas are fultile. Any room full of smokers will get really dirty really quickly, and it's gonna be someone's job to clean it up, so it becomes a workplace. Plus, from a health & safety point of view, staff in public buildings ought to be trained in emergency procedures, so they must have access to every occupied part of a premisis, so everywhere like that qualifies as a workplace too.

The problem is smokers can't control their smoke. I don't think anyone is denying anyone else's right to smoke, this law is protecting those who choose not to smoke and, for far too long, have not had the right not to smoke at work, in pubs, restaurants, etc. If you want to smoke, buy an enclosed helmet or something, ensure that every fume from your cigarrette is inhaled by you, not those who happen to be near you. :) I mean, I've a right to fart where and when I like, but you don't want me sitting down beside you while you're trying to eat and I fart constantly? That'd just be rude and unpleasant for all. So I take my smelly gas outside ;)

I had my first sighting of cigarette bins mounted outside the main doors of a pub yesterday. One on either side of the doors. O' Sullivans in Douglas (Cork). Gave me that warm & fuzzy feeling inside.

good post, also on a safety point, pubs/clubs can now have smoke alams fitted, usefull in the event of fire.

Some smoke alarms aren't triggered by tobacco smoke.

Banning it EVERYWHERE, the car park in work etc is ridiculous. People should choose whether they want to go to a smoking pub or not. I don't mind restaurants so much, but this ruins relaxing in the pub now.

Women standing down dark alleyways late at night to get a cigarette is NOT A GOOD THING! is someone going to police their safetey? The gay community expressed a similar concern too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,643 ✭✭✭magpie

I love it. "What about the gay smokers who might get beaten up outside".... That my friend is clutching at straws.

As someone who now only succumbs to smoking when in the pub, I'm looking forward to the ban.

It's just a shame that Mr Martin doesn't have the courage of his convictions and ban smoking altogether... wouldn't have anything to do with tax revenue now would it?

what about a national smoking day, you only get by people like me poisoned once a year!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,678 ✭✭✭ArphaRima

All of the anti-smoking lobby is really getting on my nerves. A blanket workplace ban is not a good thing. I think any law brought in without regard for common sense is a bad idea. What the hell was ever wrong with a dedicated smoking room? Only ever the smokers will be in the smoking room.
Cleaners having to go in is not a valid argument. That is usually done after hours, even if in work hours, the room can be closed while it is cleaned, like toilets are.

Smoking in company cars.. What the hell? Why not?
This is being brought in by the Minister for Health. Anybody who claims smell as a bloody health issue I will slap personally (and textually, unfortunately).

and sucking down on cancer sticks is common sense?

fact is, smoking kills you and people around you. it realy is that black and white.

You didn't even read my argument did you?
I still have the right to smoke. So killing myself isnt a problem. Killing others. Well tbh I didnt propose that.

Now answer how smoking in a company car is going to kill anyone other than the smoker in a private car, or in a smoking room more than a footpath.

And please answer in a way that is not just hatred for the smell of tobacco; but a civilised argument. Even smokers have rights.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 545 ✭✭✭alienhead

thats fair enough, sorry didn't read post fully. i've nothing against a smoking room in a workplace, wouldn't work in a pub though.

as for a company car, the health at work argument doesnt realy apply. smoking in company cars shouldn't be aloud anyway, you're soiling a car that dont belong to you.

give em up dude, they're rubbish!

I know. Addicted. Every smoker is a junkie.

I have plans to quit. But not in time for the ban. On purpose. I hate nanny state politics and pc police.
Im gonna give it a month. That way I can bitch about the path Ireland is taking and then give up. Satisfy my principles etc.

tbh the ban in pubs doesnt bother me. It's the blanket workplace ban that does. More common sense please.
