I am soooooo looking forward to Monday night. I can see the pubs being packed just to see how it goes.:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,698 ✭✭✭garthv

i dunno, its gonna be crazy, people will be all like "oh yeh lets not smoke in pubs" but once theyve had a few pints on em itll be all like "ahh **** this,im not goin out in the pissin rain to smoke" and spark up inside which will cause a lot of hassle for us barmen because the pub gets the blame for it afaik:/

Yeah. The onus is unfortuantely on the pub as opposed to the individual.

It will be a lot of hassle for bar staff and bouncers in the short-term but hopefully over time it will improve.

Still, I wouldn't like to have to kick out a muppet who has downed load of pints and then lights up. Won't be easy or pleasant.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

Id love to walk into a pub next monday and it be smoke free, but i know this aint gonna happen.
For the time being any reduction in smoke in pubs will be good as far as im concerned, and hopefully after afew months it will be totally gone...

/me dreams of the day when someone smoking gets stares and people whisper things about them like 'i think hes a Nazi' and so on....

In return for waiving my right not to breathe her smoke I get to see a video of a smoky wench on the rip?

    Not bloody likely! :p

Two words my friend.. "Pepper Spray"

Roll on the 29th even though the cynic in me says it's never going to happen. But anyway, roll on the 29th and reporting loads of pubs!

    from link
.. Smoking and drinking go hand in hand and I believe ... blah blah blah

Well drinking a pissing go hand in hand ... drink and your going to have to pee.

so how about I carry a water pistol and when your'e lighting up in the pub with your pint I make your'e eyes sting and your hair and clothes stink and see how you like it ...
seeing as pee doesn't cause cancer and is sterile, you cant really complain about that right?
here I am Stinking of your smoke, eyes stinging and slowly damaging my health because you like to suck burning leaves and tar in to youre lungs a blow it all over me, you can'nt object to my actions as it's no where near as bad for you as your smoking is for me right?

well either that or I go to a joke shop and buy a can of FartGas and bring that to the pub ...
which is even less ojectionable as it just stinks and is'nt even wet!

but I've been told by people that they'll beat the crap out of me if I do it to them... this was after they told me about the plan to get a large number of smoker to light up at the same time so that the bar couldn't do any thing about it...

    from the site:

I plan on getting a petition of at least 50,000 names and presenting it in person to Micheal Martin

That leaves another 3,450,000 people who HAVEN'T signed the petition so could either be indifferent or disagree with the petitioners ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

what i filled in on the petition

Obviously this person's mother smoked during the pregnancy, as this is the only thing that can explain this woman's incredible stupidity. I do not condone this petition in any fashion. Well done Mr. Martin. You make me proud to be Irish

Firstly, I don't want you to die :)
But I don't agree with the petition. There is no logical argument I can think of against the smoking ban.. The only argument I can see in your webpage is 'freedom to choose'... What about my freedom to choose to practice my shooting in a schoolyard? It would be an ideal environment.. small moving targets, etc. Laws exist to protect the public..

and i signed the petition and passed it onto all the smokers in our work, who most of them also signed it aswell

we currently smoke in our under ground car park and will be getting thrown out to smoke on sheriff street, more smoke comes from the old bangers/cars down there to kill half the ozone layer yet we are being punished for having a few cigarettes during the day which is nonsense really..

no one even works in the bloody car park, all of this is starting to get beyond a joke really

    do you like the smell?

you have a right to smoke
I have a right to fresh air.

    my right wins.

    it's like rockpapersissors
if you find some thing that says you have the right to poison me you can win, ok?

its not as if anyone smokes at there desk though is it? and blows it in your face...

most offices they either smoke outside or in a designated place, either way if you stand in the designated place (example - like our car park, where not a soul works and the only people that can be found down there are smokers..

Thats not my main complaint though, my main complaint was summed up on another thread
Its not just about the fact that smoking will (finally) be banned in pubs. Its the fact we never had a right to choose. Nobody asked us if we wanted a smoking ban and when it comes in, nobody will ask us if we want people kicked out of pubs for smoking.

Its not fair, its not democratic.

which is that and that alone..

I think that all barmen should be given tasers to sort out arsehole smokers who wont stop.

as has been pointed out, big chief, us non smokers have never had a choice, if you wanna go to the pub then we HAD to put up with second hand smoke. Now, thankfully, you have to make the choice, you want a pint, then youll have to contain your urges/go outside. Its about time the law took the side of the people trying to maintain their health. as kipper said, its a simple rock, paper, sissors situation

and that site has to be a joke, look at the clip, 'yeh, were great, just look how ignorant we are as regards the law.... cos Martin is wreckin me buzzzzzzzzzzz, shwaaaaa'

    It's not democratic?

If you disagree then ensure you vote against the parties who are denying your rights in the upcoming council elections, then at the next general election too. That's democracy. One can't really expect there to be a referendum on every little thing. I'd be more upset about them allowing the US Military to use Shannon airport.

Use your vote. That's how it works.

prohibition doesn't work and i cant see this ban being properly enforced, there should be some sort of compromise made, such as making it the law to have sufficient air conditioning in pubs or something and having smoking and non smoking sections, i just dont see a ban like this working

btw, someone told me that the ban affects all public places, like outside as well, hes talking out of his ass right? that would just be overkill

i can see the off licences making a killing out of this as well, if the ban does work, i wont be heading out much anymore

one other thing, does this apply to niteclubs as well, and if so, hows that gonna work, you'll have to go outside for a smoke, how'r ya gonna get back in again

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,502 ✭✭✭MrPinK

The ban applies to all enclosed workplaces, including niteclubs. You're probably not going to be able to get back, so you either wait a couple of hours before lighting up or sacrifice the rest of the night just for a nicotine fix.

I don't think there'll be any problem with the effectiveness of the ban. Just look back over some of the previous posts. Some non-smokers are just itching to report people. Publicans aren't likely to just sit back and let smokers spending a couple of quid to cost them thousands of euro in fines.

I smoke, and I think the ban is right BUT there should have been the option to have an enclosed area to smoke inside where staff would not have to go. Jeez, we live in a technological age and there isn't a SAFE WAY to smoke indoors.

THe whole thing about workplaces extending to a truck for example is ridiculous when mothers or fathers driving their children to school can smoke away.

Slowly but surely this is becoming more and more like a nanny state..

The film from the petition site IS funny!

actual yes, yes they do. (smoke at their desks)
also not every one works in an office...
and while they might not blow it straight in my face, a few smokers in a enclosed indoor area do make the whole are stink. I dont see how you can disagree with that ...

the car park ... well, that does seem a little odd ... um what sort of a car park is it? underground? what about security gaurds ... do you have any ... do they not work? ... but if its "open" then it's out doors as far as I'm conserned...

I cannot wait for this ban to come in. Im sorry, but after years of putting up with ignorant bastards blowing smoke in your face in bars, coming home smelling like an ashtray and hoarse from breating second hand smoke, i and many others like me can finally go to the pub and not worry about getting emphysyma. And i think i speak for all non smokers when i say...enjoy your smokes...in the f*cking car park, suckers!!

Maybe if you're trying to stay healthy the pub is the wrong place to be? I go to the pub after a week of working and going to the gym to undwind and have a drink or 2 and a smoke.

Surely you could divert your time to figuring out a compromise that suits BOTH sides. I do feel I have some right in this matter to smoke with other smokers somewhere. At least a smoking area somewhere rather than women etc standing out in dark laneways trying to grab a quick smoke...

This doesn't help at all does it:
You're free to enjoy your filthy habit in the comfort of... the fu<k away from me!

Ah self righteous judgements. Wonderful. I'm on a real BBS now.

I think the calls for enclosed smokers areas are fultile. Any room full of smokers will get really dirty really quickly, and it's gonna be someone's job to clean it up, so it becomes a workplace. Plus, from a health & safety point of view, staff in public buildings ought to be trained in emergency procedures, so they must have access to every occupied part of a premisis, so everywhere like that qualifies as a workplace too.

The problem is smokers can't control their smoke. I don't think anyone is denying anyone else's right to smoke, this law is protecting those who choose not to smoke and, for far too long, have not had the right not to smoke at work, in pubs, restaurants, etc. If you want to smoke, buy an enclosed helmet or something, ensure that every fume from your cigarrette is inhaled by you, not those who happen to be near you. :) I mean, I've a right to fart where and when I like, but you don't want me sitting down beside you while you're trying to eat and I fart constantly? That'd just be rude and unpleasant for all. So I take my smelly gas outside ;)
