common names.... I know at least 4 Amandas ... half the names you mentioned Havelock are common enough!

..... I heard a name for a fellow before ... Dagan ... thought it was nice.. and unusual ... and Irish....

    unusual names always sound best....

    Layla!!!

Wouldn't that be deadly if you hooked up with someone by that name!
You could sing a line from the song by the same name every time you wanted something!
eg. Layla, get my dinner ready!

Anything said in a French accent (knees weakening already) :p

Nothing said in a Dundalk accent!

    (For instance, compare "Jacinta").

I think so too. But think how many drunken men could have sung "Roxanne" by Sting & The Police at you in the middle of the street?!?

    [SINGS LOUDLY]RRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOXXXXXXXXXXXXAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNEEEEEEEE...

If you ask a girl in a bar her name, and she replies anything sounding remotely like d'yawanna, you say yes - and quickly leave. You do not make fun of her....only if she's crap do you make fun of her :p:p:p

Too many Gandalf avatars in a row there...

Anyway, weren't we talking about women's names, as opposed to just any French?

    Lets actually do that comparison.

French women: "Je suis Jacinta" (Sha-cint-ah)
Dundalk women: "Well. Dey call me Jacksintar".

    Quite a difference.

For a guy, Parthalán, pronounced in a good Irish accent!

The last guy who bore that name probably died a good few centuries though!

Concepta is not a saint, If you were born on the day of the imaculate (sp?) conception girls were named concepta 8 dec. 15 of august is another holy day but not a saints day a girls are called......? bad name anyway someone mentioned it but cant think of it, cant think what 15 of august is for. My sis is born on the 15 of aug she was luck that mam does like the name but the two grannies were up for it. :(

I dont think Jacinta is a saint just an ugly name.

well, usually you start loving things that are associated with a feeling or something happy, if you ever had a girl friend and loved her very very much i'm pretty sure, you'd love her name and everytime you'd hear that name somewhere you'd remember her and feel good!

parents should be panished if they call their boy:

    gaylord or merion

i dunno about the girl though, ah here it is!

charlie ! i mean for a man yea it's a very nice name but how the hell to call a girl charlie? can you imagine screaming on the street infront of her block, charlie i love you !?

and also Joe! i mean Josephine is a nice name! but Joe! i don't know man!

This is slightly off topic, but reading this thread gave me an Idea. My Name is (surprise surprise) Caimin [hello!], pronounced like the Cayman Islands. Its an Irish name, and whenever I meet someone for the first time they always remark that its an unusual name, and ask me where I got it. (ehhh, ask my parents).
So what I want is a cool story for how I got my name and what it means, any suggestions?

    Caimin
