    Probably a liability issue. Because if it suddenly gives control back to driver in a turn then a crash could easily occur if the drivers hands aren't on the steering wheel.

    Nissan with pro pilot the same.
    BMW the same.

    Constant hands back on the wheel, to the extent that it’s not worth using. TACC seems better and less stressful at times.

    Better to have both and the option not to use. I never understood people who would buy a car without cruise control when it was a no-cost option. You don't have to use it, but it's nice to have the option.

    I use the CC on motorway trips all the time. I used to be a on believer but I’ve come around in recent years.

    The Nissan auto steer is actually quite good, once you get over the constant hand presence. The Tesla is better and I’d rank the BMW in third place out of the 3.

    I’d rank the ID4 similar to Tesla too. Their system is good.

    MB autosteer/cruise control also seems less needy than the Tesla implementation and generally just assists without intruding. Still have to have hands on wheel of course as it guides the turns but far less need to keep reenabling it on long trips.

    Actually if it wasn't for the "bong" and the jerk every time it turns on/off, the Tesla version would be roughly as good as the others. Tesla allowing user steering to override to overtake without having to reset would be a big improvement. Does paid-for EAP allow that or only more car initiated actions?

    Would agree with this. I used EAP regularly enough in the beginning due to its novelty factor but quickly tired of it especially with heavier motorway traffic. It’s too slow to move across to right hand lane when indicator is activated. I used to nudge the wheel to try and move out quicker which immediately meant the EAP deactivated requiring I takeover the manoeuvre and then reengage EAP. It became a pain so I gave up using it.

    From time to time I still use it on longer drives with light traffic where there is plenty of time for EAP to complete an overtaking manoeuvre without throwing a hissy fit

    The Model 3 is a brilliant car.

    I'm keen to hear more about this hands-free Autosteer though. I'm on software version 2026.20 and the nagging on Autosteer is woeful, on any and all roads.

    Is it better with EAP or FSD purchased perhaps?

    Yeah they seem bulletproof,I was thinking of changing this year but now I'm gonna keep the car for another while, it's that good - and an absolute bargain as well, happy days.👍

    Hi everyone. I just took delivery of a long range model 3 coming from a VW. I’m just trying to understand how Tesla state the range in the car. I know the WLTP is to be taken with a pinch of salt but the car is fully charged and is showing 620km as opposed to 750km as advertised.

    Does Tesla state the real range in the car? My VW used to say 605km but it would drop very fast.

    A car cant know the real range because it doesnt know what it will be asked to do over the next full battery discharge. It will be based in some sort of historical factor like your last few days driving. If your Tesla is brand new it will take some time to calibrate. Id prefer it to say 620 rather than 750 anyway because no car is going to get 750.

    VW seem to be optimistic, I find that myself with my cupra, range will often display well into 500s but I only get in 400s. My renault has a max and min range 'a range of ranges' as does Kia which i think is a great way to do it.

    Its based on the set calculation between the the official EPA figure and what the BMS thinks is left in the battery.

    You can drive it flat out for a full battery cycle, charge it to 100% and it will state 620km again.

    Turn to % and leave it there, same for any EV. The GOM is pretty much useless.

    But where the Tesla is accurate is in the energy app. It will tell you the % on arrival within a %.

    Yeah I think the % is a far better system to use. The km estimate can vary so much sometimes it's not really a reliable guide.

    Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

    Switch it to % and never go back Vudgie.

    In many ways you learn too forget what appears on the specs (from any manufacturer).

    Be very happy with the suggested 620kms and be content with the 500 real world summer kms of the M3.

    As others have suggested, getting used to % is much better. Range meter is not useless as such, the problem is that there are too many dynamic variables that affect the calculation. Speed, weight and temperature are probably the three biggest factors.


    Energy meter is the way to go for an individual trip. Tesla navigation is brilliant for multiple stops also to help plan when charging is needed.

    Exactly, the 620km EPA estimate should be achievable as long as you are not 100% on motorways
