got that but French teams are very different (full-strenght and motivation) in a final, even Challenge Cup, lots of fans there, even for Montpellier small fanbase, and they are used to win this competition too… + looking at their lineout you'd know how strong they are! Except the wingers, area they dominated more than they should in theory, the rest was likely to go their way.

I did think Ulster had a chance, that's why I worried for Connacht spot, but still less chance than focusing on Glasgow game which would have gone your way, only with Augustus and Postlethwaite added

My implicit point is maybe Murphy slightly underestimated/anticipated optimistically, the "only slightly weakened Glasgow team in the end", picked to come to Ravenhill

I'm not convinced that it had to be one or the other. The teams that make the URC final will do so by going full bore two weeks in a row, or three in Leinster's case. The Ulster coaching staff do have a wealth of GPS data to inform their decision of course.

I am not a fan of resting players for a final in the first place - I am far from convinced the extra rest is worth more than the cohesion of a run of games together.

But Ulster really did seem to target all the wrong games. They weren't to know it of course, but going full strength for Leinster instead of Munster was a massive error.

And don't you tkink they were kinda convinced Glasgow would rotate more?

In the two head coaching jobs he’s had, Richie Murphy has shown himself to be a good coach whose biggest strengths are implementing a good style of rugby and improving young players. Given where Ulster are right now, that’s probably good enough in the short to medium term. This also works for the IRFU, because ultimately if Ulster are supplying players to the national team, they’re happy. However, it also has to be said that in the two finals he’s gotten to, his teams have been well and truly pumped, looking like they had stage fright while the opposition showed up for a cup final. And as others have said, he made an absolute balls of the end of this season. He should have played his strongest side at home against Glasgow, secured Champions Cup rugby and a URC playoff spot, and let this week take care of itself.

Sorry you couldn’t get it done last night. It was always going to be a huge ask in conditions like that up against a very strong Montpellier pack. Missing Henderson, Herring, Stockdale and McCloskey was huge. It’s a young team who are improving and to go into a final without the experienced guys was very unfortunate but long term Ulster are on the up. You always focus on the last game of the season but on the whole Ulster have made great strides this season.

I'm just a casual enough rugby follower, but I can still say for a fact that if Ulster had played a stronger team against Glasgow and won before getting the beating they took last night, we'd have the same posters here saying "Ulster threw away a European title by tiring out their players against Glasgow."

The logic was probably you'll remember winning a trophy in 20 years time, not finishing 8th in the URC. But yep, it's backfired enormously and while Ulster have progressed this season, the outcomes are the same as last year.

I think by the time the Glasgow game round Ulster were all in for Europe so I don't think the Glasgow selection was relevant.

It is important to say that we were missing our four most experienced players for the final, and run in in general, so that limited our options.

I was saying recently that Ulster will be light at wing next season without Kok. I also think McIlroy should be used more at 13 so he and Hume are options there. Postlethwaite will probably be the de facto 12 (along with Carson) next season with McCloskey's time limited by age and Ireland wanting him in good condition for the WC. A pacy winger who ideally can cover full back too is needed. I can't understand letting both academy back 3 players go, a replacement for Kok is needed but there is unlikely to be money for one, take a chance on a young lad that costs next to nothing.

Yea losing Kok, Moxham, Kenny and Graham seemed a little too much given Moore's injury as well. Stockdale, Lowry, McIlroy and Baloucoune don't exactly have stellar injury histories either. I liked the look of Kenny and Graham but we have to remember that the coaches see them a whole lot more than we do and have obviously made a decision there. I see Johnny Scott has been filling in at wing for the A's and maybe they think Aitzol King is worth persisting with?

I posted at the start of this season that our biggest problems were the scrum and depth - I can't pretend to know anything about Snyman but if he's not a starter then the scrum doesn't exactly improve for the important games. He seems more like a big body to partner with the likes of Irvine and Hopes while they develop, which isn't the worst thing. The halfback depth should be improved immediately with Devine and Benson. We had a big clear out but as someone highlighted before, most of those players are very inexperienced so it looks like we are going to need players to improve from within the squad to improve the depth across most positions (Irvine, Hopes, McAllister, B Ward, Carson etc).

Agreed. Ulster really didn't help themselves with some of the decisions they took in the final. They just looked like a team lacking in experience.

Heat though - F*cking Hell. It must have been horrific to play in that.

Mike Lowry - Unbelievable the amount of ground that he covered & how he kept going.

I think Richie Murphy may have miscalculated his options at end of season. But I've no idea how banged up/fatigued some of the players might have been.

RM only in his second year in the big time as a HC. He's still learning and he is getting an experienced coach in Dermody next year.

With the squad they have all the eggs have to be put in to URC next season. Target Top4 place.

saw elsewhere that Chay Mullins from Connacht is rumoured to be heading our way. He was tidy for the u20’s under Murphy but I’m not sure I’ve seen him since. Perhaps a Connacht fan could let us know a little more but I’m assuming he’s at least at upgrade on Mox and will help with back three depth? Can he play 15?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,878 ✭✭✭realhorrorshow

He was a little meh for us for us but he has all the tools and would be a decent upgrade on Moxham I think. He frustrated me because I know he has bags of pace from his sevens days but he never really managed to use it effectively, kind of like Aaron Sexton. He had one of his best games for us in the CC against Sharks recently, thought it might have been enough to win him a contract but I think we probably see a higher ceiling in the likes of Finn Treacy and Dan Ryan.

I do think there's a good player in there somewhere and Ulster could be the perfect place to bring that out, the attacking system gives wingers loads of opportunities.

He's cheap squad filler I would say.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,383 ✭✭✭Paddy_Mag

If he is available all season, id say he would be a solid option that doesn't break the budget.

Bello all but confirmed i think.

Hasnt really played in 2 seasons but could be good if fit, almost a Marty Moore type signing again

    Stay safe Ulsterfans.

Just been sent home from work in Belfast city centre - noises being made about more riots this afternoon.

3 Ulster lads in the U20 squad for the World Cup.

Blake McClean - Prop (came off the bench through the 6Ns)

Paddy Woods - Second Row (I think)

Daniel Green - Utility back/mostly Full Back I think.

I don't think any of them are starters for the big games, although I think Woods may have another year to go at U20s.

So apparently Keynan Knox is coming to Ulster after a couple of years being toughened up in France.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,476 ✭✭✭Locke_Lamora

Is this in addition to Bello or just insurance if he can’t stay fit? Either way, I’m guessing O’Toole is making the switch over to LH?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,379 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

I think as well as? So yeah, I'd say TOT is definitely playing LH next season

Ulster have announced Lorcan McLoughlin leaving the province this summer when his contract expires.

Somewhat strange timing IMO when they'd already announced their leavers a few weeks back, but I guess the writing was a little on the wall with how little he featured this season, and then you layer in McNabney and Ben Donnell in his position being available next season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭Scythica

I could be wrong but isn't he leaving to pursue medicine or something like that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,022 ✭✭✭Scythica

Chay Mullins confirmed on a 1 year deal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,725 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Definitely needed another winger. Sexton must think he can add something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,379 ✭✭✭Paul Smeenus

Eduardo Bello (NIE) - one year

Keynan Knox (IQ) - two years

Chay Mullins (IQ) - one year

Mullins getting a chance to prove he's worth it - the same for Bello or we can get someone signed up after the RWC, Knox getting a proper crack of the whip.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 373 ✭✭VayNiice

I thought Knox would no longer be IQ through residency once he moved to France?
