O Conaghaile and McDonnacha were on the standby list along with Egan and Mulhern.

Mulhern goes from starting to standby list, Roche similar, 2 or 3 lads on the 26 that will not be getting a look in, from here in [ be it 1 game or 3 games ] PJ will need 11 lads behind him that can step up and deliver

Fionn did'nt get a lot of ball because it was'nt played into him ,however he was quick and alert enough to get his hand to the short kickout that led to Shanes goal , Management could see it was'nt going to be a game to suit him and replaced him soon enough…Conroy scored 5pts (one 2)the last one not long before he was subbed I believe,I think he and the management know his limitations at this stage (60+_imv) ,i'd prefer to have seen McGlinchey come on but I think management wanted mullkerrins to see it out , he does a lot of unseen work off the ball imv...I dont know ,not mcHughs best day but he did supply Hernon for his goal ,marginal call whether to leave him or pull imv an experienced lad can adjust his game , mcDaid was out on his feet when he was pulled ...kickouts ,two sent to the sideline first half but otherwise i'd give him 6.5/10 ...as long as I dont see Gleeson galloping up the field with those big loose solos that put the heart crossways in every Galwayman and woman i'm happy enough

We're probably in Kerry territory now i.e. 3 out of 4 matches to date against teams that aren't in division 1 of the league, similar to Kerry's stress free groups the last few years, and we've a two week break before a match against a battle hardened team. Kerry have often been cold starters in quarter finals. We need to be ready for this. Though we may just be slow out of the blocks in two weeks.

There's already a ready made reason for how we do in the quarter finals. If we win we were fresh and rested, if we lose we weren't battle hardened.

We're good enough to beat anybody. The biggest issue is putting in three huge performances in a row, like what Kerry did in Croke Park last year.

Do we see any improvements, any progression from recent years? It just seems with Gleeson in goal that we still haven't figured out kick-outs and there will be a day where we don't break even on kick-outs and we'll be in trouble. (I guess other goalies have the same issue, not all on Gleeson.) Do we see any patterns of play that can be repeated, like the way Kerry can work the ball so Clifford gets the ball in space? Again it seems like its all off the cuff and it's up to the players to figure it out. Basically is it a case of doing the same and expecting a different result?

Fingers crossed for a game of attrition between Kerry and Armagh! (and fingers crossed Galway don't throw the year away on a team like Meath/Mayo/Monaghan again…)

Surely there were other players deserving of a start ahead of McDonagh who really hasn't shown much in the oppurtunities he has been given so far. Not really fair on the guy to be chucked in and then pulled again after 20 mins. Has McGlinchy done enough all year to deserve more game time ? Certainly didn't stand out with the u20s. Mulkerrins limitations shown up for WM second goal. McGrath or O Laoi surely a better call to bring in. Playing Conroy for 65+ mins seems mad

I would of thought the way we create space to get Shane Walsh and Rob Finnerty (lesser extend against Westmeath) into one on one situations is no better or worse than the way Kerry do it for Clifford?

Fionn was huge in the league until his injury. Was mention a few times in media as "a shining light" so not sure its fair to say he didn't take his oppurtunities. He got a significant injury. Recovered. Was released back to his club. Played a few league games with Moycullen and I'm guessing was showing enough to warrant a start. At 6"7 he offers something different. But as another poster mentioned Westmeath dropped an extra man into the pocket which cut off direct ball. I think it was wise to bring on another runner in McGrath. I'd imagine Fionn will see more game time depending on how far things go.

" Huge in the League " is a bit OTT IMO and shining light

He was very ordinary I'm afraid. For non-established players, the likes of Shane McGrath, Oisin MacDonnacha, Liam O'Conghaile all had better contributions.

If you're kicking 1-4 in your league debut against Mayo, I'd love a few more ordinary players 😁

Thought his ball winning against Armagh in his second game was a big part in us hanging in there to eventually grind out a win.

Picked up an injury after that and started to fade before disappearing until now.

Even how poor he was against Westmeath (and I'm not saying he wasn't) he intercepted the ball for Shane Walshs goal and his quick hands helped set up Molloy (and I think one other) for scores.

He's a big unit. I wouldn't imagine he is in any direct competition with McGrath or O' Conghaile for spots as they are runners. Oisin maybe and definitely Roche as he is another "big forward".

If he's going well in training to jump ahead of a few lads is that not the point?

Lads bursting their hole in training and outperforming those they are in competition with and never see game time is one way to negate the influence of your bench.

Its good to see joyce giving new lads an opportunity on bench and helps to keep squad players bursting a gut in training to get onto panel. Its cutthroat though and you may only get half hour int here and have to do damage if going to hold onto that jersey. Oisin Mac Donncha hasnt got game sime since run out against leitrim where the forward unit was poor that day but that was his opportunity to rack up scores and keep ahead of lads queing up in behind. Surprised to see Jack Mullen from Claregalway on bench the last day. He must be new onto the panel and bolted ahead of others. Dont remember him standing out last year for u20s or for the club.
