Can feel like we have 15 goalkeepers outfield at times with the lack of shooting…

Along of lines of expected. Shane McGrath gets his chance. Bench is getting stacked with Fionn McDonagh and O'Laoi adding more depth. Interesting to see Jack Mullen parachuting in. With Flaherty back fit would of liked to see him back in goal but I guess Gleeson did very little wrong against Kildare. But if PJ thinks lumping the ball all day long into a contested midfield battle against Westmeath he would want to rethink.....

Has there been any word of Thompson coming back into the fold yet? He would be some addition to what looks like a strong squad on paper

I think he's a massive loss. His worst (and only poor game) was against Meath and its no coincidence we struggled. I would of put him high on the list of "indispensable" players at the start of the year. Unfortunately it looks like he won't see any game time this year.

Last I remember hearing was he was due to come back when he returned from college in America has that changed?

Cooke is a bigger loss to our panel imo

Regarding the team to face WMeath, I think it suits having Paul Conroy to come on last 15-20 minutes as when he starts games can pass him by a bit with the speed of it these days.

I'd also have better tempted to start Comer.

    Great to see McGrath start

Apparently he got an ankle injury a few weeks ago but didn't hear that he wouldn't be back. Plenty of time yet.

Broke his ankle playing basketball in America. Already had the op a while back. Don't think he's in the plans to be back this year.

Never a fan of the East Breeze in Pearse Stadium. Although it suits Finnerty as he loves the Arus end. Place jammed already.

Salthill has been occupied by Westmeath some buzz around town

Could you flesh it out a bit as to what you think they done wrong today 🤔

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,199 ✭✭✭Robson99

Fionn McDonagh starting, Conroy left on pitch for 65 mins, Dylan McHugh not replaced, took McDaid off, Mulkerrin brought on , no kick out strategy again.

We can be thankful that D'Arcy brought his A game to Pearse stadium today.

Darcy caught everything today. He alone deserves credit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,940 ✭✭✭Happyilylost

F*****g unreal. Contested 9, won 8 clean. Scored two. Almost felt like Westmeath decided to sacrifice leaving him free to double up elsewhere. He had the freedom of the park at times and went to town on them.

Sean Kelly I thought was immense too. Hernon kept Heslin scoreless from play. Plenty more had big games. I know it ended 3 points but it felt like a 3 point hammering to me. Why we didn't try to go for more goals when only one more pass was needed is beyond me.

They seemed to win it easy enough but we're shipping big scores. Apart from Kildare we havent shaken anyone off and Kildare are awful.

I'd worry against a strong attacking team. Even Roscommon who it has been shown are no world beaters ran through us like a dose of salts.

On the plus side, either Kerry or Armagh will be gone by next week and its one less really big threat to deal with.

Sorry I was trying to respond to the ko strategy comment. Darcy was brilliant but someone has to find him.

The flood gates fairly opened when Daly went off, i dont know why joyce took him off, if he wanted to give molloy a run out, take off McHugh as robson99 said. Happy enough with how we played. All we can do is beat what's in front of us.

McDonagh was poor alright. At least they rectified it by bringing in McGrath who added more to the attack. Conroy hadn't a great first half but grew more influential as the game wore on. McHugh no worse than Daly, in a HB line that was too loose all through, but that's a long-term issue with the team. McDaid wasn't going too well and didn't look himself so it was a brave but necessary decision to swap him out. We've been a lot worse with kickouts in fairness, mainly thanks to the display of Darcy. Wouldn't be too critical of sideline yesterday, they got more calls right than you would normally imagaine.

Strange decision to bring McDonagh out of nowhere and start him. Then not try and utilise him. McGrath named but dropped, then brought in after 20 mins. Conroy should have been removed instead of McDaid. He is way off the pace of it, McDaid was putting a lot of hard yards. Daly offered far more than McHugh both defensively and offensively

Our kick outs were fairly poor in the first half and in the second half it was all on Darcy to get us out of trouble. We won't get away with only one kick out option every game [ That's not all on Gleeson ]

Where has O Conaghaile and McDonnacha gone to, not even making the match day ?

McDaid, for all his power, can be a bit loose in possession at times, i.e. being dispossessed when soloing. It's a pity McHugh, and McGrath (who must surely come into the reckoning again) can't recapture their heights from 2 seasons ago.

Subs bench does appear to be a bit of a Bermuda Triangle alright. Players playing one week seem to disappear altogether for the next game, e.g. as above, plus Ryan Roche etc. At least Thompson is back training and the omens may be good from what I hear.

Ironically, if Gleeson delayed that last kickout, (which led to the McHugh insurance score), to the point where the ref pinged him again for time-wasting, it might have won us the game there! Westmeath would have the choice to tap over the free and hope for enough time for another play, or played the free back out in the hope of getting a two-pointer. Can such a free be brought back outside the arc?
