success in waterford is measured differently, a new manager coming in , only needs to win promotion to 1a , and win 2/4 munster games to be considered a success .

i have no idea, clearly he wouldn't be the world beater next year we would hope, but given how poor he finished he could go out on a high. i don't think he could have done much more with what he had

Derek McGrath will be the next Wexford manager

If it's an appointment such as Pat Ryan, that would be why, otherwise is makes little sense as you say and I agree.

Let's look at Pat Ryan as a manager

    2 x cork hurling champions

2 x Munster senior hurling championships (one as a coach, the other as manager)

1 x National hurling league final

    2 x u20 All Irelands

    2 x u20 Munster championships

Now I am not saying Pat lands us our first All Ireland in 67 years as if it was easy it would have been done a long time ago.

But in my eyes he would be a step up from Peter Queally and probably a step up from most within our own county.

The current panel is a little in transition, but someone like Pat could possibly get an extra 10-20% out of the lads, which could be enough to get out of Munster or land a league title or Munster title or maybe not.

Within the county I only see Darragh, Joxer or Jason Ryan.

Give Darragh and Joxer the time and experience under age, and have them come through with what looks to be a decent crop of players is the smart move.

Jason is worth a shout but is he up for it and wanting to stay with BG? Outside of those 3 I do not see many internal options.

Just on Darragh and Joxer, Sean Power won a minor and u20, at the time he won 2 of Waterfords 7 All Irelands (total AI's between minor, u20 and senior) but yet was over looked for the senior job, the natural progression there would have been to give him the job when we appointed Fanning or Cahill.

That is the idea around both Darragh and Joxer, at least that is what it looks like, so shoe horning them in now would be a mistake, if it happens I hope I am proven wrong.

And before some says we have eight All Irelands, I am aware my point was at the time Power won 2 of our 7.

I still don't know why we go for these managers that play a style that's defensive. Under Justin we played an attacking flamboyant style that was brilliant to watch and under him we rarely got a bad beating. We didn't have the best fullback line during that era but we still played some of the best hurling we've ever see. Justin even bought Fergal Hartley out of retirement to solve our fullback issues. Under Davy there was the 2008 final where he wouldn't allow Ken McGrath to come forward. I know Kilkenny were excellent but we should have had a go at them. The 2011 Munster final and we got slaughtered by conceding 7 goals against Tipp. Under Derek there was the 2016 Munster final, the 2018 game against Tipp when we attacked all game and decided then to go defensive and ended up drawing. I know the ghost goal didn't help but we didn't help ourselves with how we performed in the second half. The Limerick game was shocking that year as well. With Cahill we were outstanding we were told to go for goal and allowed to hurl. Davy was a disaster in 2023 but when the players went to him about the style and set up in 2024 we were very competitive in the championship. Queallys 2 years were inconsistent and most of the time defensive. I remember listening to that Tippcast episode after the 2025 All Ireland final and Shane Brophy and 2 other guests said that they felt if Waterford had pushed up against Cork in Pairc Ui Chaoimh we would have won the game. Is it that hard to find a manager that will play and attractive and an attacking brand of hurling? I think the reason Peter Queally is gone is because of a fight after the Limerick game

    Completely outside perspective here.

Derek McGrath did an exceptional job to lead Doon to their first ever county title in Limerick. This is a club that were almost programmed to find a way not to get over the line.

He has his own way of setting up teams, but it dosent have to be seen as negative. Doon played scintillating hurling at times, fantastic to watch. The first half of their semi final win against Patrickswell in 2024 was as good a performance as i can remember in the Limerick championship. Champagne hurling.

The likes of Darragh O Donovan is on record as rating McGrath in the same bracket as Kiely and Kinnerk, in terms of coaches he has worked with.

I think the break up of the management team left us in a tough spot. If all of the management were happy to continue together I think Peter would still be the manager. But with a considerable amount of this years management team having made it known they wouldn’t be involved next year Peter would essentially have had a new management team with him next year. Either way we would have had considerable change in our management team.

Wonder was a CB member out on a dinner/piss up with someone to sway the support away from Queally staying on ??

Peters statement sounds like he did want to stay on

Ah here PTH I'm sorry but what kind of a conspiracy is this .

I tell you something, we love the rumour mill in Waterford.

Peter probably did want to stay on but he only had a two year contract.

Year 1, promoted to division 1A, 2 points in Munster championship.

Year 2. Relegated from Division 1A, 1 point in Munster championship.

Our league form was very poor this season. Large parts of the game V Clare we were poor, the first half V Tipp we were woeful, a very good second half, spirited performances V Cork and Limerick.

Despite those spirited performances both Cork and Limerick games seemed lost with over 10 minutes to go.

Last season V Limerick we only lost by 6 points but it was like looking at men V boys, this season we felt we put in a great performance and lost by 9.

I honestly don't feel there is any huge shock or conspiracy to the decision of not extending Peter's contract.

If anyone takes a breath, sits down and evaluates the past two years, there have been more bad performances than good performances.

That is not me having a dig, as I like Peter and genuinely wanted him to succeed, he is one of our own, did all as a player and a manager.

Results in Munster could have been worse this year without Billy Nolan between the posts.

The break up of his back room team was the reason given at the county board meeting the other night.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,860 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

    agree with this

it’s that next 10/20% is needed to get out of these players to get over the line. There’s probably another year or 2 max in this group . Peter did a fine job in my opinion and the team worked their socks off for him but couldn’t get us over the line in 7 of the 8 championship matches in charge and that’s what counts ultimately. Sticking with him for another 2 years was really resigning our fate, Einstein’s definition of insanity and all that. You have to beleive there is someone that can come in and take it up another notch and really instill the belief in the team that they can be successful. I would think someone of the Pat Ryan Ilk fits that bill

This group has been on the road for a long time now, and the growing injury list suggests the team is starting to break down physically. At this stage, I don't think the answer is finding someone to squeeze another 10% out of the current squad. Waterford needs a manager with the vision and ability to rebuild, refresh the panel, and develop the next generation while remaining competitive. The focus should be on long-term sustainability rather than trying to get one final push from a group that looks to have reached its peak.

Things as they were in the club championship.

Ballygunner comfortable winners in the League final. Mount Sion very wasteful with their shooting.

Comfortable 15 point win for Ballygunner.

BG had a squad of 22 today, it was the A final so it would suggest their A side although I don't think they need to fix players/panels during the league as it's only needed for championship

limerick minors had easy win v Galway and now face tipp in final

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,860 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

fair points, but isn’t that exactly what Queally was there for?

I have heard from a former inter county player, that the Co. Board are not to blame. Its seems that a small number of players were not happy and may have approached at least one County Board officer with their views.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 80 ✭✭blacksuir

How long is Derek out of Inter County Hurling management now. Surly if he was a rated manager, He would be snapped up by another county, even if it was someone like Carlow, Offaly etc. He only got the Waterford job because of player power, or maybe more correctly past pupils.

If I was a manager I couldn't ever see myself managing another county other than my own. Even from a club perspective he went outside the county.

Maybe from a county perspective he only ever wanted to manage his own county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 43,117 ✭✭✭✭PTH2009

Didn’t he have an interview for the Wexford job before Rossiter got it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 56 ✭✭The Bernablaa

You had me up until 'the Co board are not to blame'.

But in fairness, Peters time had run it's course time to move on. Thank you for your service but the results were lacking.

never saw a teamsheet , amazing in the world of instant communication this information is still done by hushed chats in the backs of playing fields but alas.arguably ballygunner is more hampered in the league than any other team due to the high numbers they have not available as are on ounty duty at various grades.

and again,i can only guess that the second choice players that made the final ,would insist on playing in it themselves not handing off to the county boys who were absent and didnt help them get there.

Ballygunner had a number of county players playing (from various grades) so I wouldn't say they were hampered. Dessie, Tobin, etc were playing.
