… and took charge of that minor team (missing their best pkayer) into U20s ; lost their first match to a late goal by the eventual U20 AI winners.

Looks to me like the Co. Board are determined to keep us on the merry-go-round, not giving the manager the support or time needed.
There has been a great improvement in the team this year, regardless results. That held promise for me for next year.
Now it is back to the beginning again with someone else.

I would have faith in Neil Moore and the county board considering the work that's going on at underage level in the county. The u20s are only going to get better so are the minors. Pat Ryan would be some appointment. He said in that brilliant interview he done with Eoin Sheehan on "Off the Ball" that he misses management and the buzz in the dressing room. Is one of his parents from Lismore? Be brilliant to get him in with Donal O'Rourke and play a good attacking brand of hurling. I believe he would get us to a Munster Final and who knows from there. We have the players no doubt about it. We don't need Davy or McGrath back we want to play a good brand not play hurling with the handbrake on

I'm sorry for Peter, I really did hope it would have worked out for him but I am not surprised at all with today's announcement.

I said it before, he is an honest lad, Waterford through and through and would hold himself accountable. I have no doubt he would have had a plan and expected to get out of Munster within the two year window and not reaching that goal he knew himself would have been difficult to stay on for another year.

Someone said earlier that we were competitive this year and yes we were to a point but if we look at it realistically.

    • Relegated in the league, two wins over Limerick and Offaly.
    • 1 point in Munster. 6 point defeat to Clare, horrendous first half V Tipp, 4 point defeat to Cork and 9 point defeat to Limerick.

Let's be real Tipp were brutal this year, and only drawing against them was a poor result. While competitive in the other games, 4, 6 and 9 point defeats is still a blow.

Some of the league games were very poor performances.

Positives this year, second half V Tipp, a win V Limerick in the league and playing OK for 70-80% of the other Munster games.

Where we go from here I am not sure but I don't think this appointment is as critical as the balls of an appointment that was made after Liam Cahill.

We are in a bit of a transition and are probably 3+ years from seeing some of the minor All Ireland winners come through.

Personally I would love to see Pat Ryan here although I am not sure how realistic that is, or if the timing is right. I would like to see Joxer remain with u20s for another year or two, ideally two.

Outside of that, I'm honestly not sure.

Amazingly all any manager has to do is get us out of munster to be a success, have some momentum over the next 2-3 years and then hopefully we retain a lot of those minors and they begin to break into the senior ranks.

Is Stephen Molumphy back home? He would be an excellent option for the manager job

I know Peter is only gone as of today but is there something more to this Pat Ryan rumour? Has contact been made in some shape or form over the past couple of weeks? I thought it was a bit odd that Donal ORourke, who happens to be very tight with Ryan, seemingly made it known he was stepping away from the setup even though the managements’s term was up anyway. I know Duck to be an honourable guy so don’t think he’d want to double-cross Queally maybe he just wanted to distance himself from the situation if he knew something was happening in the background. I personally beleive if the co board haven’t been bending over backwards to keep Queally on for another year they have something else up their sleeve. The consensus was that things were progressing under Queally and there were no obvious replacements within.
But if you thought there is a chance you could get Ryan you’d move heaven and earth. This would be a massive coupe.

I would think the majority of folk would think you are being extremely harsh there…..Queally definitely gave his all and had very bad luck especially with injuries, you could count on one hand how many games had he a ‘full deck’ available to him….?

Brendan Cummins term with the Tipp 20s is up this year.

A guy with an open disdain for Waterford? He can stay right where he is.

And plays a terrible brand of hurling, judging by Tipperary fans, they don’t want him near their senior job.
I’m all in favour for Pat Ryan and given Queally stated the lack of support from the county board, I wonder would they have only decided to part ways with him if they already have an alternative at hand. Although a passionate Waterford man, results despite improved performances have been poor and overall, Queally has been with a lot of teams and won 1 county title which was a robbery on the day but I wish him well as he did give it his all.

I have a left field call in James Woodlock as an alternative to Pat Ryan. Has a great record at underage with Tipperary and I could see Cahill staying on a few years yet. Again, I would prefer Pat Ryan but he would be an interesting appointment but his lack of experience managing at adult level goes against him.
I do think the appointment of Pat Ryan would perhaps be enough to convince Barron, Bennett et al to continue for another year or 2 which would be great given the minors stepping on to the panel, their experience would help no end and the fact they are still some of our best players.

Thanks to Queally and whoever else in the back room team is stepping away, we didn’t enjoy much success but it wasn’t for lack of trying. Best wishes to him in future, I’m sure he’ll be back in with a team before long and he comes across as a decent skin.

It would be hard to say thanks for the memories as to my recollection there have literally only been 2 or 3 which, in two years, isn’t great. And even those have a “grasping for straws” feel to them - the win against Clare in championship last year where we could dream for a week or two of getting out of Munster, the win over Offaly last year in the 1B league final to get promoted back to 1A and then the win over Limerick in the league this year. You could hardly put decent performances this year down as memories.

To cut him some slack the one thing I would say is it does feel like he took over at a time when we only seemed to get a bit weaker as each season passed, coupled with all other Munster teams getting stronger. He’s had to try get us out of Munster with 3 of those teams having won the last 3 AI’s (with the other being Cork who would/should have won if those others didn’t). Would it be reasonable to say no Waterford manager ever took the reins at a time when the hurling landscape was so difficult? Like if you think back to when the likes of Justin, Davy, Derek etc took over it was mainly KK as the standout team while the rest were give or take fairly even. Nowadays it feels like we’re up against 4 other of those Kilkenny’s just in our own province, difficulty wise.

Before anyone jumps down my throat or accuses me of defending him or making excuses, I’m not. Just reflecting on how the current situation feels. In a way I’m looking forward to seeing what a new appointment brings, it has the potential to have something to look forward to for next year but obviously only if it’s the right appointment.

To be honest if you we to opt for Stephen you might as well have left Queally there for another year.

I think that is a like for like appointment in terms of experience.

To me it only makes sense to get rid of Peter if you can take it up a notch.

name checking all Ireland minor winning managers from other counties as potential new managers when we have won a minor ourselves last year…… Unless this Pat Ryan thing comes to pass who is an exceptional candidate I don’t think we should be looking outside our own county, simple as. we’ve been stung by Liam Cahill and Davy Fitz in the past as a stepping stone for young managers to learn and experiment before they realise their ultimate goal of going on to win All Irelands with their own county.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 401 ✭✭upthedeise16

I understand your point but Davy’s first tenure and Cahills time had both reach All-Ireland finals, 2 of our only 3 All-Ireland finals in 60 years so I would say both appointments were successful (Not Davy’s 2nd term!).

Seán Power was probably overlooked unfairly, in particular in relation to Fanning getting the job but I’m almost certain that Seán has taken a step back from any form of management so he’s probably not an option. I think Joxer (& Tommy Ryan etc) should do 2 more years with the 2025 minors in the hope of winning an under 20 All-Ireland, similar to Power in 2013 & 2016. Even if he doesn’t win the under 20, given his record at club level as well, I think Joxer should get his chance down the line when his group are at senior level but I don’t think the time is right now. I’d love Darragh O’Sullivan to stay with the minors for 2 years and then step up to under 20 after Joxer. I suspect that might have been the county boards plan which shows good foresight.

Rumours of Eddie Brennan and Henry, nope probably people not hearing there in for the Kilkenny job not the Waterford one

Big step up of levels of Kerry to Waterford for Stephen Molumphy

Would Pat Ryan want another 'Munster job' and no doubt we're different then 2018/19 when he had one foot in the door with us

    Derek for another stint ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,477 ✭✭✭seananigans

I would rather guide my dad into my mam than have eddie brennan in , the amount of times he stuck his oar in ,he can stay up there .

    Derek could be an option

Been in 1B could have one upside as it gives the new management an easier opportunity to bed in

I think it would be shortsighted and potentially ruin all the good work put in at minor and u20 levels if they went for Darragh O'Sullivan or James O'Connor now. There seems to be a good plan in place there to develop for the future.

Whoever they go for now needs to have the belief they can squeeze a bit more from this current squad. Most of the best players that we rely on are on the road a long time though so it's another question of which players will be available or hang their boots up as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,406 ✭✭✭914

    This is the post.

Underage structure needs to remain as is, let's look at the bigger picture and not be short sighted.

In the county I am not seeing a lot that wouldn't be a similar appointment as Queally was, outside of the current underage setup that is.

Jason Ryan could be a good could, AI win with BG, managed intercounty previously. Committed to them this year though so unlikely.

Outside of that you would have to say with Derek McGrath or Pat Ryan.

I'm not for bringing managers back, I feel that can be short sighted.

What year was it again that Pat Ryan was nearly in the door?

Definitely best to leave O'Sullivan, Joxer, J Ryan as is.

P Ryan, Duck & Brown might be a good combo.

Did Cummins tell you that in person or are you just pulling it out of the sky?

Oh sweet divine jasus not Mcgrath, lovely man but have we learned nothing from the repeat appointment of Davy Fitz. Apart from that, the style of hurling was awful

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,860 ✭✭✭Mastermcgrath

it’s clear as mud when you listen to him summarising on matches or writing about us. Maybe it’s because he’s from a neighbouring parish in Ardfinnan only over the border from Formilewater there would be no love lost but aside from all that, he would not be a good fit for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 53 ✭✭rockable_audio

I thought Molumphy played some good attacking hurling with a bang average Kerry team. They fell short cause he hadn't the players to come in off the bench. He would be far better shout then bringing back McGrath. I wouldn't leave Cummins anywhere near the job. I was delighted Clare bet Tipp in the u20s Munster Final. I had never seen a Tipp team play so defensive as they did against us in Fraher Field. One man inside the Waterford half of the field. It was the same as Derek McGraths anti huling. Hopefully Pat Ryan will take the job. We could know a lot more in the next 48 hours
