While I have no doubt that Farrell is the right man for the job today, 2031 will bring his reign up to 12 years which is very, very long.

I was in two minds about that duration situation myself, as in it may arise that things get stale and the dressing room is lost, but I think that is more of a club level issue than a squad that comes together thrice a year. Besides I have no doubt that Farrell's assistant coaching ticket will evolve over that time.

Why I think this long extension is a very good thing, is that the coaching structure and pathways at provincial level is not what is should be at the moment, for all the reasons that have been well thrashed out on this forum over the last two years or so. And so when it comes to an ultimate successor to Farrell, we have to think that the internal system will be in a better place five years hence. Hopefully!

Can't think of anyone who isn't anything but a significant step down from Farrell for the job at the moment.

Just because he has a long contract doesnt mean he'll see it out (or be allowed to) if the doom-merchants are to be believed.

Best coach in the N hemisphere delighted to secure Andy to a guaranteed full RWC term and to effect the very important transition process for some of our key players as our 2027 & 2031 teams will be unrecognisable. In safe hands

Presume he could walk into the England job if he wanted so this is really great news.

That's a loooooong extension, but given that the next coach will likely be either Goodman or Easterby, that's not necessarily a bad thing. Don't think either of those guys would have the necessary expertise to take over after RWC27 if it came to it.

Coaches usually have a shelf life, and it's usually a lot less than 12 years. EOS lost the magic after about 5 years and Joe after 5 or 6 years.

That said on the evidence of the 6Ns, Farrell seems to have lifted the team out of a trough and got them moving in the right direction again, so maybe he can be Farrell 2.0.

    Good news.

I would much prefer if he didn't Coach lions in 2029 though.

It didnt work the last time - from an Irish perspective.

Its a long time as a HC (& Defence coach before) and history suggests it will be too long. Hope he brings in a fresh voice with good coaching experience to freshen things up.

He’ll have to freshen things up next cycle with a lot of players winding down. Think this is good. Theoretically he’ll want to be blooding some of these players next year if it’s a 50/50 call rather than sticking with the old reliables despite it being a RWC year

Farrell has already been freshening things up. Paddy McCarthy was challenging Andrew Porter for the starting loosehead berth, before the former picked up a bad injury. Unfortunately Paddy has picked up another injury, but I think we'll see him and maybe even Bohan get more chances in the lead up to the World Cup.

Baloucoune and TOB have very quickly become Ireland's starting wings also. Osborne had a great Six Nations and even though he's firmly second choice full back when Keenan is fit, we've established that we have a very capable deputy for him. Hansen has been injured for ages, but we know he's proven quality and can slot in capable anywhere across the back three.

Second row is the area where we need to see more development. Beirne, Ryan and McCarthy are all excellent players, but we need at least one more. Maybe Edogbo could be that guy, but he clearly needs to prove something more to Farrell. Would have played more in the last Six Nations if he had fully convinced the coaches. Also, we need to be planning long term in that area. Beirne will be 35 at the WC.

I've full faith in Farrell that he can bring through one or two more players, that improve the squad, by the time the World Cup begins.

Joe's team looked goosed in 2016 then completely reinvented themselves and won the GS in 2018. I think he might have been able to do it again but we'll never know and obviously Andy worked out super well. I think the top top coaches will have slumps but can reinvent things.

Maybe the Lions sojourn will have helped - though i hope he doesnt do it again.

Great news, he's done a great job and there really is no other outstanding candidate.

Very happy with that extension, significantly moreso than I would have been at this time last year. We saw some real freshening up of things during the 6 Nations, and a level of performance that we probably haven't seen since Marseille 2024. We've gone some way towards arresting the slide this team seemed to be on, and some way towards freshening up an aging squad.

There's also a significant lack of alternatives interally, atm, hopefully that will change by the time the next RWC finishes.

The only question mark is that 12 years is a hell of a long cycle for any coach, in particular to keep things fresh, but Farrell more than deserves the benefit of the doubt. (Tho I'm not a massive fan of our coaching cycles finishing up after a RWC, when the players know the incumbent coach is leaving post-tournament).

I presume that there is the standard 6-month walk away clause for both sides which gives an out if things go very pear shaped.

You’d also assume that there will be some turnover of coaching staff to maintain freshness

Second row is OK I think; if Murray keeps progressing and Izuchukwu can ever stay fit, I think there's a decent supporting cast there.

Half-back is the big concern. JGP is definitely slowing a bit and we need someone to really stake a claim there; hopefully this summer is when either Casey or Doak, or both, make up some ground. Out-half is obviously an issue but I think that may have been briefly discussed previously.

Another good tighthead is badly needed too, it's looking very doubtful that Furlong will make it to the RWC in any sort of shape, so we need a back-up to Clarkson, noting Bealham will turn 36 during the WC.

Involved and failed at 2 World Cups so let's reward him with 2 more

Keeps the lads in jobs (POC & Sexton) so everybody's happy

Have world class Irish Coaches around and didn't even give a chance ROG, Felix Jones, Stuart McCall

I've never seen a positive comment from you about Irish rugby, why do you bother?

so after every world cup every single coach bar the winners should be sacked.

thats a very balanced viewpoint you have 😂🤣

Hiring Stuart McCall as the Ireland coach is exactly the sort of ballsy move the IRFU could never even contemplate.

A long-retired Scottish soccer player is the sort of fresh voice that this stale set-up desperately needs, but we're too afraid to rock the boat and upset the D4 media.

no arguing Farrell's qualities as a coach, but 3 wc cycles is an incredibly long time to be in situ. Fierce danger of things going stale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,621 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Doak and Murphy will be incumbents post WC imo, honestly wouldn't be shocked if one of them was pushing JGP for the starting slot by the time the tournament comes around.

Maybe McNamara will come on board as attack coach after his Bordeaux contract ends in 2029.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭johnh6767

I would be shocked , different leagues altogether no comparison IMHO

Hoping and praying. Frustrating to see such a talented Irish coach helping a French team dominate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,471 ✭✭✭✭bilston

JGP is absolutely the right pick for Ireland still, but I don't see why the likes of Doak and Murphy can't close the gap. Where was JGP at 24? In NZ playing NPC?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,621 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

I don't think talent gap is that large, on current form. JGP is slowing down, and the other two are playing some great rugby. Massive gap in terms of experience, but we've seen that Doak looked very comfortable slotting in during the 6Ns. Murphy has a lovely dynamism to his game, able to create opportunities on the fly. They're both superior to Casey imo.

Crazy decision. You give a coach a 4 year extension before the outcome of 2027 World Cup. And only the most deluded optimist really believes there is much to look forward to at the 2027 world cup.

There is another matter that is looming. It is clear to see that Leinster performances are becoming more and more rigid in their plays. So more and more questions will be asked as to why Ireland plays have become staid over the next year. And then there will be calls for fresh blood but this can't happen. And the reason it can't happen is because Leinster must continue to be the major contributer to Ireland. And there is a reason for this. How Leinster play is how Ireland play. Any non Leinster players are simply introduced to Leinsters plays. And that is Andy Farrells function. It cannot be the situation that any player can be selected to play for Ireland.

So as we watch Leinsters demise we watch Ireland's demise. I suppose when you think about it we'll it doesn't really matter who the Irish coach is in the current environment

Excellent news. I hope the IRFU made it clear about the Lions jolly.
