Already on 44mm of rain this June in Dublin. Must be the wettest start to the month since 2012 here.

Yes indeed, but then again we are very easily pleased in this country. A few good days here and there, and the misery of the Irish weather is soon forgotten about.

I’ll take a few more weeks of this unsettled weather, I’ve seen too many fine Mays and Junes only to be followed by poor summers in my lifetime. The best summers are late starters, let it rain for for another 2/3 weeks before it’s time to start worrying.

I'm of the age and income that vest and jumper are standard dress. Hat and gloves in the house is still a no no.

Normally I don't agree with this sentiment as May and June are my favourite months of the year but can we for once have a wonderful July please. And I don't mean one that is pleasant or pretty good like say 2019 or 2025 (or one that is sandwiched with an extreme spell like 2021), I mean one that hits all the pillars exceptionally so. Very warm, very sunny and very dry or at least dry for most of the month with a thunderstorm thrown in. The last time that happened was 2013. 13 years ago. I had just finished primary school then. Not as bad as how long we waited for August that did so until 2022 though.

The same amount of rain that fell in April and May combined pretty much. Nature always finds a way of evening things out over the medium term.

We'd a very wet winter. But spring (March to May) wasn't nearly as wet in the East as some seem to think it was.

Thankfully it hasn't felt that cool in Dublin anyway. Around 17 or 18º each day. Bang on average for the time of year.

The next few days look cool alright. But tentative signs on the charts this morning for something a bit warmer in over a week. So let's see…

I didn't want to say anything as I would catch flak but it's actually well above average for the start of June in Dublin. Mean is nearly 2 degrees above average (15.0 vs 13.3), moreso to do with the nights but the daily max is also over a degree above par. And that's the whole monthly mean as well, the start of June is a bit cooler than the rest of it on average. Even if you include windchill in that, it would still be above average.

I looked at Belmullet to compare for the west where in contrast it's slightly below the monthly mean of 13.1 vs 13.4, probably very average counting for the cooler early June average.

Yes, what's often considered 'bad' weather on here is very often just standard Irish weather. The very warm end of May probably makes things in June feel a bit cooler for some than it otherwise would have…and it's a bit different further West as you say.

It's a pity you feel you'd catch flak or grief for just quoting statistics. Don't ever stop with the stats — regardless of what they show — you're such a great mine of information. Keep it up — as well as the photography of course!

As I often say I find statistics alone are a very poor measure of the real-feel of the weather in Ireland, there's absolutely no way whatsoever that the past few days in Dublin have felt warm, the incessant strong wind alone takes several degrees off the temperature and the torrential squalls every hour do the same again. It's been an awful start to the month, I don't see how anyone can seriously argue otherwise

Update now that I'm home from Wexford. I was a bit frustrated at the forecast given what we just had, but that was all. Only notable time off from work all year and it happened to be the worst weather week in quite a while. Nothing more, but thanks for the kind words @waterfaerie.

In the end we were lucky enough. We were based in Wexford town and the weather there was better than most. We had rain, mainly yesterday morning and even then it was just shower dodging.

We spent much of Wednesday in Rosslare where we had uninterrupted blue skies all day, despite everywhere getting lashed on. It was quite windy though.

Let's hope that the weather settles down again soon. I think the Irish have some justification in complaining about our weather. Yes, this is normal, but even still we fare worse than most in Western Europe. It's easy to get jealous of warm, settled weather that is pretty much guaranteed in most of the continent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭compsys

    Well you've felt cold. I haven't.

Some people are always cold. Some people always put the heating on etc etc.

Everyone's perception is different. I guess this is why we look at stats and statistics. I mean, people were complaining about the 'cold' spring and it was the third warmest on record (and it was even above average before the end of May mini heatwave).

Now, I wouldn't necessarily say the weather has been 'good' this month. But nothing about the past few days is that unusual weather wise for Ireland.

As one poster already highlighted, we only have to go back to last year to find the exact same pattern. Temps of only 15 or 16º happen every year in summer in Ireland, especially in June. I think even the summer of 1995, the best summer in recent memory, had a very cold start to June.

This is it exactly, when the wind is howling and your soaked for the 3rd time that day, if you told someone it was warmer than average, I'd love to record the response you would get🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 14,624 ✭✭✭✭sryanbruen

Felt warm and statistically warm are objectively two very different things of course. Warm in statistical terms often refers to the temperature being at least 1 degree above the average. I know the UK Met Office use a guideline book on carefully using terminology like cool, warm, hot etc relative to the anomaly and time of year. It's somewhere on their digital library. I don't think Met Éireann are as particular in that regard.

1 degree above average during the day in early June is still like only 17-18C in the east or 15-17C in the west which in terms of feel, though can vary from person to person depending on a variety of factors, is absolutely not warm.

The only thing I would argue is the usual hyperbole or drama that it's like the worst start to June ever. I've already seen a few comments like that making the rounds or they don't remember a colder start to June. But I've only seen that elsewhere, not really on this forum. Similar with the poor first few weeks of May, coldest May on record when it wasn't even close to remarkable. Can say it's crap, horrible, cool etc without making dramatic statements like that.

I've already made it known myself that it's been a rubbish start. Though the thunderstorm early hours of Tuesday morning was fun, I missed the one earlier Monday evening whilst I was in work.

Many thanks for that. There's just so much anger and misinformation posted now that I don't bother to be honest especially outside of here. The photography at least gets me out and in a sane state of mind away from it all - don't get me started on AI comments though 😂

Your point about Met E terminology is spot on.

I really think they need a very detailed style and communications guide outlining how to describe temps based on the time of year and the anomaly v the long-term average.

It really feels like some of their weather forecasts can be very biased depending on who has written them and weather the person felt cool or warm on a particular day lol.

I love the colours and vibrancy at this time of year.

We're just on a casual chat forum, people complain about the cold because they feel cold I suppose🤷 We don't need to qualify all our observations and experiences with statistics. I do take the point about the "worst ever" type stuff but that's just recency bias or whatever, I noticed the same with the thunderstorm the other night, it was a nice little storm but people caught up in the moment were calling it the best storm they'd ever seen etc.

Out of curiosity I just had a quick look at historic stats for Dublin airport and fed the values into Claude, it comes back as the second wettest start to June on record (the wettest being in the 1950s so essentially the wettest in living memory) and the 18th windiest (again most of the windiest were in the 40s/50s), so it's definitely not been a normal start to the month, by the weekend we're likely going to already have more than 100% of our monthly rainfall.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 627 ✭✭✭Thunder87

Yeah, it's more the perception side of things I'm talking about (which at the end of the day is what most of us posting here are reporting on), we have wetter than average months that were actually lovely but skewed by a handful of wet days, and then drier than average months that are miserable because of lots of damp, drizzly days.

With temperature, there's so little variation month to month in this country anyway that I find wind, dampness and sun play a much bigger part in how warm and pleasant it really feels (outside of exceptional events like last week obviously).

I know "feels-like" temperature is a thing but I've never really looked at how reliable or accurate it is, or if there's even any real long term stats on it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,269 ✭✭✭compsys

Of course, but you said "I don't see how anyone can seriously argue otherwise" and I'm just saying I haven't felt that cold and tried use some stats to back it up.

I don't necessarily trust AI for detailed weather stats. Yet. But I do agree with you that a lot of rain has fallen this month as that's on the MET E site. But it does follow a very dry two months in the East at least (is this where you are too?).

But yes, I'm not saying it's necessarily been a great start to summer. Can't say I've noticed the wind, but if that's what the official stats say I won't argue otherwise.

But as Sryan kind of alluded to, my point is more around 'worst ever' posts etc etc. And "it's colder than ever as I turned the heating on." (we almost all do it every summer at some stage I would argue).

Sometimes I think people's memory only lasts a week or two when it comes to the weather.

Anyway, tentative signs it'll be nicer in just over a week and hopefully we'll all be agreeing then on how nice the weather is lol.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Wexford, Wicklow and Dublin are added to the yellow rain warning in operation for Cork and Waterford. These south tracking lows with wraparound fronts tend to be slow moving and can give prolonged and heavy rain on the east coast, as an ancient weather lore says - ‘rain from the east 24 hours at least’

I'm glad you updated. I was actually thinking of you this week and wondered if the weather was being kind to you! It's great to hear you got at least some dry weather for being out and about. I hope you enjoyed your well deserved rest.

Yeah Elmer, looking at the Multi Model looks showing Wexford and Wicklow could get a lot of rainfall tooo, the ICON HD model showing Connaught very wet - good model in the short range.

Statistics will never take into account the real feel ,like the wind chill factor. Would not be very scientific if they did.

In Wexford atm. Was nice here for most of the day. Went up to Vinegar Hill.

Personally I like this weather. In dublin 15-18c mix of clouds and sun some heavy showers, mild enough nights. Don't get me worng the last few weeks were fab, but I couldn't live with it all summer. Love the mix. The main thing is the long days.. God they really are fab..

What i take from this is that you're 25/26. Really? I would've assumed you were 20 years older but still 20/30 years younger than the majority of posters on this thread who i reckon are all in their 60s/70s (I don't mean to offend any regulars in this thread if that's not the case).

Its been a reasonable day here, a few squall in the afternoon but nothing bad. Only got up to 13c that I seen. I got our lawn mowed this evening and Mrs said she got two machine loads dry on the line today. Time for a couple of pints, young lad calling for me.

I escaped with just an isolated shower in Meath. The main rainband is just reaching us now. Great win for the ladies in the rain in Cork.
