There's no fair usage anymore, the services are genuinely unlimited. That's not to say there isn't the usual clause about eir "reserving the right" to limit users they deem excessive but I haven't heard of it happening too often.

Until recently I had a 3 sim for my 5G internet - never a problem with throttling or fair usage

    Hi NotShero,

A combination of two of my earlier queries/posts!

I've heard back again from CCS Broadband, and they have confirmed that I can now get VDSL HSBB, via a 'Push Order'.

"Open eir have stated that VDSL HSBB at 50-70Mbps is available to order now from any RSP of Open eir but there is a slight issue on the ordering system and if you wish to place an order with any RSP (retail service provider) of Open Eir we will need to carry out a “Push order”.

I'm wondering would this work for the GoMo sign-up, or is that tied to FTTP? I understand that I'd only have basic speeds for now, but as I already have GoMo for mobile, it might avoid the regular switches and lock in the offer.

Failing that, am I better off sticking with Three 4/5G @ 20 - 35Mbps, or trying again with a GoMo sim in my 5G router?

Also, is the 50-70Mbps stated above realistic in real time?

Thanks again for your input 😎

No unfortunately you can't get GoMo on open eir FTTC, it's only their full fibre FTTP network.

Yes you could try Clear Mobile (Vodafone) for €12.99pm or GoMo (eir) for €14.99pm, to see if those networks perform better where you are. There's also the option of Starlink.

You can check these websites to see if FTTP is planned for you from any of the networks (open eir, SIRO, NBI, Virgin etc.) -

    Thanks NotShero,

So, VDSL HSBB isn't likely to add anything for me, in terms of speeds?

I forgot you had previously mentioned you are included in the open eir FTTP rollout, aren't you.

VDSL/FTTC depends on how far away your property is from the cabinet. The max is 100Mb/s, so they are estimating 50-70Mb/s for your property. It could have better latency, jitter and consistency for you compared to mobile broadband though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 409 ✭✭Beagslife

Yes, included for the longer term FTTP open eir roll out, but could be waiting a while.

I think you answered another question for me too. I've just been on to eir chat trying to get an idea of what packages they offer for a VDSL HSBB connection, but was getting nowhere, even after sharing some of the CCS Broadband email.

Tried again using my parents address which shows up to 90Mb. So, if I went with eir, I'd probably be offered their 'Up to 100Mb' 12 month contract at €34.99 a month, but with a lower speed. Does that make any sense?

Regardless, probably easier to stay as I am for now.

    Thanks again NotShero 😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,779 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah they advertise it as up to 100Mb as that's the max of the FTTC service if you are really close to a cabinet, but you are estimated to get 50-70Mb/s.

It should show the estimated speed on the ComReg broadband checker too -

I was with various providers when on fttc I am about 60 metres from the cabinet and I was getting a rock solid 65 download speed 15 upload, latency and jitter were nonexistent is was a great connection and ultra reliable I'd definitely recommend it. If you do opt for it make sure your internal wiring is in perfect condition and it's the proper solid copper twisted pair not that stranded rubbish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 409 ✭✭Beagslife

    Thanks CoBo,

As it would be a new install, I presume any new internal wiring would have to be up to standard? I have some Cat6 cables running between current 5G router and other main points in the house.

@NotShero what type of distance from the cabinet would their estimate of 50 - 70Mb/s indicate to you?

Great to have this resource on Boards!

I wouldn't be too sure but @CoBo55 mentioned above that they were about 60 metres from the cabinet and were getting 65Mb/s. Afaik it really starts to degrade after 300m.

I presume it wouldn't always be just distance that determines speed, it's probably the biggest factor though.

This offer is personal and exclusive to existing Virgin Media Broadband and /or TV customers only, who have been contacted by Virgin Media with the Half Price for 12 months offer via SMS or Email.

So, if this is you and you'd like to accept, simply fill in the form below to confirm and we'll get it added to your account.

I know since I gave my notice,I got a call and a few text/email with offers like this, you have to put in your account number so obviously it's linked too similar accounts

My contract is up soon and I'm pretty much stuck with them as there are no other options on my street. Of course they know this as they can check my address as easily as I can.

Did you cancel first and later get offers to stay? And what did they offer?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,779 ✭✭✭NotShero

Going by posts on here, you give your 1 months notice nearing the end of your contract and they'll call you with offers. They seem to offer the same price or similar for 9 months & 3 months at a higher price but some have gotten them to eventually give it to them for the full 12 months. You can also ring them and ask for offers when your in the 1 months cancellation period afaik.

Your area should eventually be upgraded to Virgin's FTTP, you'll be able to switch between Virgin, Vodafone, Sky and Digiweb then. You'll see 2Gb/5Gb available for your Eircode on Virgin's website when Virgin FTTP is available to you.

My area is due to be upgraded but nobody can give me a timescale on it.

My last negotiation was two years ago - I refused the 9 months thing and in fairness to the girl I was talking to, she came back with a decent reduction for two years. It's a game of chicken basically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,838 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Sorry that should be 600 metres from the cabinet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 409 ✭✭Beagslife

A final question for now! Which other retail service providers use the Open Eir FTTC service, that might be worth checking packages with? Or is it just eir.ie

Re Starlink, I don't fancy investing in them, as I don't trust that they will be competitive going forward, especially as we will eventually have access to FTTH.

    😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,838 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

All the usual providers, Vodafone, sky, Pure, Digiweb etc. have access to the network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,779 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah as CoBo55 said above, nearly all providers offer service through it except Virgin Media.

Sky 500Mb has been reduced to €27.99pm on a 12 month contract for new customers, €67.50pm out of contract.

Fantastic price. In direct response to GoMo with the "no setup fees" bit. Hopefully this will make other providers bring down their prices too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 216 ✭✭spark_tank

Great to see a bit of competition, though I'd still choose GoMo just to avoid price increases and the hassle of switching providers after the year is up.

Meanwhile Eir and Vodafone still mugging people off with hefty increases every April.

    Colour me shocked

Used Switcher to go with Vodafone, phone call/s to setup (could not take revolut), all ok ready to go (this was Thursday last week)

Trying to log in, some old number, said I’ll get onto live chat, a few minutes later, ah this was not setup, do you want to do it now, we have good deals on live chat, no thank you twice and close the chat

An hour or so later an engineer cancellation is available for today, but I said no thanks as well I was told ive no account

Sky is cheaper, but hate sky so onto Digiweb to call me back, plus have a referral from a user here to reduce the extra cost

    • 945 asked for a callback
    • 1150 rang to see if I could do it myself, no someone had to ring me
    • 1356 rang again to see, no same story
    • 1412 five-minute phone call to tell me there’s some change of provider in the system so I have to ring them to cancel, will call me tomorrow

Ring Vodafone, there is an account, gave me the number and will be installed June 19, I said about offered a cancellation for today, no cant do anything, then moved too another section, who then told me someone cancelled the account so would need open a new account again

In two days’ time looking at the prospect of no service or paying whatever Virgin charge me for a week/ten days however long it takes to move too another provider

Rang virgin and took the half price deal for another year, next year ill know to move two calendar weeks in advance, obviously one week isn’t enough

Gomo deal not available here either

You are switching on Virgin FTTP, aren't you. When staying on the same network, It's best to just give your UAN to the new provider, tell them the end date of the contract and leave them handle the switchover.

The issues your facing might have occured because you gave notice of cancellation a month ago and are trying to switch on the same network now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,190 ✭✭✭jeffk

Yeah makes sense , I'll know next year for sure

Only thing I don't like about Virgin is ipv6 (mostly for Plex) and can't change DNS/no modem mode

I've Plex going ok, so just live with the others

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,974 ✭✭✭bromley52

If you ring Vurgin they will change it to IPv4.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,190 ✭✭✭jeffk

Yeah I got that much back thanks

Just have to remember not to factory reset it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,779 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah I wonder is there still CGNAT when "IPv4 only" is in place these days, which might cause some issues as you don't have your own IPv4 address, it's shared.

With the Hub 5x, asking for "IPv4 only mode" a year or two ago used to get you a dynamic IPv4 address and IPv6 disabled, no DS-Lite. Port forwarding and modem mode also then appeared. Modem mode doesn't appear anymore when "IPv4 only mode" is enabled it seems.

The only real option is to remove the Hub 5x and use a WAS-110 or X-ONU-SFPP, you are given your own dynamic IPv4 & IPv6 address then.

Or switch to Sky/Vodafone/Digiweb, as you were doing.

I notice VM are doing the cheapest 5GB fibre on a 12m contract at the moment through switcher. €50 per month for 12 months, no CPI increase in April, and €105 bill credit.
